Went last night and the level of moaning was off the chart. When you play a weaker team away from home, you do sometimes have to just control the tempo and grind them down.

We dominated the ball, restricted them to one chance in the game and had our foot on their throat. We were patient, scored and protected a lead. It was a very comfortable away win.

You have to bear in mind what the players are getting told behind the scenes, whatever it is. It looked to me like they executed that to the letter last night.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather see an open game where we go for them, but modern football has become about results and last night was a perfect example.

People are expressing their anxieties, that’s all. When watching United you never really get the feeling (despite being second top) that we’re totally comfortable and it’ll be a stress free game.

I find it comforting to watch United with a neutral, they see and feel the games differently and will constantly reassure you that we look assured and comfortable for the win even with a 1 goal margin.

The anxiety last night in the stand was heightened with the subs Hecky made. We were left with no pace up front or in midfield which meant Reading could defend a lot further up the pitch and could lump the ball up to Carroll more easily (their only tactic)

Whilst we had possession of the ball, the passing and movement was often pedestrian. The frustration is that we know these players can do better

The anxiety last night in the stand was heightened with the subs Hecky made. We were left with no pace up front or in midfield which meant Reading could defend a lot further up the pitch and could lump the ball up to Carroll more easily (their only tactic)
We managed the game out ok but it would have been easier with an attacking outlet with a bit of pace (Jebo)

Whilst we had possession of the ball, the passing and movement was often pedestrian. The frustration is that we know these players can do better

What is slightly concerning is that if Illy is missing for a game or two now then Hecky seems to think the next best option is Mcsharpino .. which has never ever worked.

Reading hadn't lost at home in four months and would've been looking to provide a big response to a heavy defeat in their last fixture.

The other team always gets a vote in how the game goes, we often forget that.

Pace is something we've lacked for years and would offer us a bit more imho but we can only utilise what we have.

Any away win is a good one but Reading also have a decent home record.

People are understandably a bit twitchy and promotion feels essential rather than a nice to have this time.

That said, the moaning and criticism is largely coming from the usual people both at games and on social media, in my experience anyway.

Yeah I can’t disagree. We were all wondering why he didn’t bring Jebbo on as well.

Hecky always chooses experience over athleticism. I'm making assumptions but I think his subs are much more weighted towards "don't make a mistake that hurts us" than "go out and win us the game".

Not how I'd choose a manager to be but he's been pretty successful with it here so far

I get the sentiment of the OP and I'm fully on board with keeping the ball, drawing the opposition in and looking to create chances from there. The issue was that for the most part last night we did this, worked the ball out wide to wing backs and were obviously told not to put the ball in the box at head height. Therefore what is the point in playing Heckyball if the end result is not a cross into the box?

The one time we actually played a ball in behind for someone to run onto we scored, so surely this should have been the tactic and not just sideways, forwards, back again, give the ball away football like we saw for most of the game. We had a few opportunities to play people through gaps in their defence, but we normally just opt for a simple ball instead and it becomes very repetitive. If they'd have scored late on then it wouldn't have been undeserved as they did as much going forward as we did, just in a different manner.

Good 3 points last night and that's the main thing for me at the moment, but I'm not convinced it was a tactical masterclass.

Think back to Man City beating us 0-1 at Bramall Lane in 2020 (the one where Aguero scored). On paper, the result looked quite close (especially because their goal was in the 73rd minute). But in practice, everyone who was at the game saw exactly what City were doing. They controlled the game, stayed patient and knew that their chance would come. Even when they missed a penalty, they just stayed patient and knew that it would come.

People in the stand pay their money and can whinge / moan if they want. But if they really want the players to dig in and get results, it would be better to support and back them up.

Many fans forget that pitches during March and April are hard and bobbly making it difficult for players to control the ball properly. The ball seem to run away from you in windy days when you try to keep it to your feet

Lots of teams with stuff to play for invest in a target man in January* for this very reason. Football in the second half of the season is very different to the first half, and games tend to be a lot more tense and tight.

I shared the concern about lack of pace at the time but can't knock it when it works!

Chances are Jebbo would be really exciting, tear-arse around but be easily and frequently dispossessed. Quick to get it and quick to lose it. He's just quick.

Billy came on, won a few fouls, slowed everything down, and ran out the clock.

Out of the two Billy was the professional choice.

Yeah good points. I’d rather have stretched them and got a second but obviously Hecky went for a different option and to be fair to him, it worked perfectly.
