Good result 3 - 0 for the Under 23s and if the goals are put up on the web site the 1st and 3rd are well worth a look
We had Eastwood in goal and it must have been his easiest 90 mins he's had all season. We were set up with 4 at the back Charlesworth, Cunmmings, Bainbridge (I am told he has been released by Everton) and Cantrill. Reed played as a holding Mid fielder close in front of the 2 Centre backs and in truth against a poor Leeds side they were never going to loose a goal. The set up was not producing much of a threat from us although we were well in command all through the first 45 mins. That said we should have scored from a corner at the end of the half but a couple of our lads had a go but the ball bobbled to the Leeds Keeper. I have it on good advice that this was a very different Leeds side to the one out at Weatherby and it is no surprise they are propping up the league, not what you would expect from them.
We had Doherty, Johnson (I did not recognise them), and Smith in the middle with Wright and Hallam up front but in truth it was not the high energy game we usually see.
The set up was changed by introducing Mallon as a wing back in place of Cantrill, who had played OK, but the shape with 4 at the back releasing Mallon gave us a fine second 45 mins and the final score flattered Leeds as a second goal for Smith was disallowed. The movement from Mallon to Hallum to Wright who played the ball back to Smith to finish in style was worth me using my buss pass and Hallum also converted in style. Wright scored from the penalty spot after a bit of shirt pulling and it was good to see a bit of discussion between Hallum and Wright as to who should take the kick.
We also had the physios on the park regularly and Wright had his usual confrontation that had a Leeds player booked. He does put in a shift this lad, I do love watching his aggression and skill. Not as much playing out from the back with Semple and Kelly out injured as I like but not to complain as the second half performance was so good.
So its the Lane on Monday night in a cup game against Birmingham. Depending on a game between Stoke and Reading on Saturday we will know if we need at least a point from the game to go through So this will influence who plays as we have a semifinal to play at Fleetwood the next night I think The 23s are going like a train just now but the treatment room must be packed as our resources are being stretched.
All gives great credit to our excellent Academy coaches who keep bring young players through
