Be interesting to see if Diego plays for them today, for the first time in a while we are playing a decent strength side hopefully back to winning ways

Hallam scores a fair few goals...as does Jake Wright - achievement to score 4 at any level!

Tin hat on though....

I have seen a fair bit of both of them. I am not sure either is/will be good enough for League One or above now or any time soon. At best they may be National League.

I expect Wright to move on at the end of the season (out of contract) and Hallam has another year but whilst he is a decent finisher (and takes pens, free kicks an corners!) I am not sure he has pace/athleticism or that bit of class (not sure you can just learn those things either). Just seeing the goals he scores can be a bit misleading till you watch him.

He is a competent footballer but is quite slow and small. He does get goals and a bit of a poacher - I suppose you could say Billy made it when he may not have one outstanding feature (apart from finishing) but not sure Hallam quite has that extra needed. Academy watchers feel free to disagree. Hope he proves me wrong but the lad Tyler Smith who scored also today has that pace/movement and a trick or two and would keep an eye on him more.

It is a huge step up from u23 to senior team I feel - that is the only problem with removing the reserves - great to get young kids games but they dont play many old pros anymore - most teams dont even field the 3 they can name as u23 anymore. It is in affect a slightly older Academy league. Interesting Wright struggled for game time at Gateshead. Hallam needs a National League loan also to see if he can step up and you would think we would have tried to fix him up at that level to see if he can mix it with older players as a while since his other loan spells in non league (albeit much lower level)?

I kinda see where your coming from but when he played at Grimsby early in the season he found pockets of space and got into good positions causing them quite a few problems, he's by no means the finished article but works hard and has the attitude and willingness to learn and work hard at his game, Ty Smith looks great out wide right or in a front 3 and has an eye for goal...I think the U23 side that played today will be the mainstay of next years team which bearing in mind the age of it looks an exciting prospect, I would expect Reedy and Brooksey to either be up around the first team or out on loan in League 1 possibly at Rotherham or Doncaster, they are both wasted at U23's at this stage of their careers and it also allows the younger members of the squad to push on a bit more next year

100% agree, and I have seen them both many many times.

Jake Wright will end up Non league, Hallam has great technique, so has a chance, but I would be surprised if he ever plays higher than League Two.

Hopefully Wilder will be in the position to give some of them minutes in the last couple of games if all goes well

Thanks for pointing it out.

Its still going on this no matter how many times its mentioned and then we have many on here going ape over us being called 'Sheffield'............double standards?..........

Back to winning ways with a return to our high activity and aggression We never let Bristol settle and the first half in particular showed how much this group have missed Reed and Brooks. Reed in particular led by example and we certainly bossed a good game
The game changed in the second period after we got a soft penalty and after one of the Bristol players got a very bad injury. The sound of the tackle would lead me to think the lad may have sustained a break. Bristol seemed to loose composure and there were a few more incidents.
We played Hirst and Hallum up front and as usual Hallam did his usual this time scoring 4 times, 2 from penalties. His 2nd goal, I think it was was finishing a fine passing move, well worth a look when the video goes up. We had Hirst in place of Wright and I can see this lad improving game after game. Looks like he will be Wrights replacement next season. I have watched Jordan Hallum for some time now and he is a natural goal scorer. He just seems to be relaxed when opportunities arrive and in today's game a natural goal scorer is rare. I always expect him to score and dare I say he reminds me of our captain. Can he perform at a higher level we will have to see but he has the instinct and with a bit of sharpening up he could be a fine product of our Academy
I think others know how much I enjoy watching Jake Wright and I will miss watching him when he is on loan. His type of game unsettles defenders and opens up space for others. He will play up I believe but it may not be at the Lane
This game was important to win but the serious injury kind of spoiled it for me The result however

I should have mentioned the most improved young player in the squad Ti Smith. ti has had to show fine determination since his return and he gets better game after game. He is so hard to track as he can switch wings, in fact I have no idea which wing is his prefered position. Ti can hit the opponent's rear line and as we do not have big forwards he will drive into the box. He is not alone in doing this and it is the main reason for us winning so many penalties. Smith will cut in from the wing and is comfortable taking on a strike with either foot. He benefits when Semple or Reed pick him out with long wide passes. Another season and Ti will be ready to go on loan but I know he can handle it. The next big decision for all the young Academy graduates is when the coaches decide the time is right.
Mallon is in the Brooks mould in fact I get them mixed up and my minder has to keep me in my place. All in all a fine group of boys that I look forward to watching for a long time.

No need for a tin hat on Deadbat; I've said the same about Wright for a while. Decent player but probably never going to cut it at the level that we're aiming for unfortunately.

As Baw Heid said, Tyler Smith has come on leaps and bounds in the last six months and deserves his pro contract. For me... Him, Slater and Semple are the three that can really push on in the next couple of years although Semple's injury could hinder him massively.

I was giving my view on goal scorers and although i do agree with you Hallam scores goals.
I have watched the development of what I thought was a great back four. Charlesworth, Cummings Semple and Brown but with only Callum Semple now in our plans. Callum is a fine defender product of the Academy where he has been encouraged to develop his skill, passing and reading of the game. Other things like strength was being worked on before his set back but his reaction to the clubs medical and coaching staff will see him back next year. Taking some time off when he can work on upper body strength will benefit him in the long run. Graham looks a good prospect No lack of strength here and I think playing with Semple will result in a fine partnership which is what Central defending is about.
Slater will be a main stay next year and is a fine prospect. I would hate to have to face him and Reed, They remind me of a fast Scoles and even a fast Billy Bremner. They may need to control their aggression a bit though.

The future sounds bright, thanks DazBlade88, Deadbat, larkymasher, Baw Heid and anyone else who keeps us expats udated on the academy progress.

Much easier to get a player to rein it in a little than to try and coax more aggression out of a wallflower. Sounds promising.

I couldn't agree more except to add Jake Bennett to the list for a lad who has been at the club 6 months he has been superb with a little more refinement to add to his strong running up and down the right hand side he could well become a good addition to the first team squad reminds me a little of Chris Short. Be interesting to see if young Slater grows a little in the summer a couple of inches taller and he would take some stopping in centre mid, personally I would like to see him control the game a little more rather than do Reidy's leg work that said they are a good pairing and you have to admire Reedy's attitude this year when others would have given it the big one and sulked about a lack of first team action

Totally agree. Jake Bennett seems to be getting used as the midfield wide player and you are right he is coming on fine. I personally would like to see the coaches developing his defending skills, but what do I know. Like Smith Bennett is improving game after game so it's watch this space.
Just one other thing. Based on the trialists I see for the Centre Back position I think we are well served and I wonder why Joe Cummings is out of favour

I think Slater will grow in size and stature over the next 12 months. Yes he does Reeds leg work but when Reed goes and Slater is the main man there will be someone next to him learning the game and doing Slaters leg work.

For me we have 4 players who could go out on loan next season and come back ready to play in our first team Semple, Graham, T. Smith and Slater. Yes they are young but i tell you, they are good enough without a shadow of a doubt.
Hallam i am not sure of physically, although he does remind me of a Duffy type.

History suggests that you’ll turn out to be correct. The majority don’t make it and I don’t think we’ve produced a forward that has made a career at a high level (top 2 divisions) since god was a lad (DCL looking like he might be the exception to that but it’s early days). Slew and Diego seemed exceptional at youth level but have struggled to make a meaningful impact on the professional game so it’s probably a long shot for either of these lads to make it. That said, now and again, you see young players struggle to make the breakthrough, drop down to non-league and then come again. Che Adams, John Akinde, Omar Bogle, Marc Roberts, Angus MacDonald, Marley Watkins, Andy Yiadom, Jamie Vardy, Lee Gregory etc. are all examples of players who had to drop down to non-league, mature and develop and come again to make a career at decent levels. Not saying either of these lads will come back that strong, just that you never know. Even Billy had to do the business at a low level with Rushden and then Scunthorpe to become a championship striker.

I agree they need games out on loan though. Playing mens football has to be the next step for as many of these young players as possible.

I was listening to FH the other day and one of the non-league managers (Sheffield FC I think) was saying Regan Slater looks an excellent prospect (along with George Hirst for the pigs). I’ve not seen much of this lad but the fact he’s scored in his only senior appearance bodes well. With Reed, Brookes and Whiteman also being impressive at that level, we have a lot of strength in depth in central midfield to support the likes of Coutts, Fleck, Duffy & Carruthers next season.

Football is a funny business. I don't think Regan Slater is any more a prospect as Diego was football wise. The most important thing is how they handle the extra attention and how they act off the field.
The difference with this batch of youngsters is that they don't blab all offer twitter about this that and the other. About boot deals, Famous dads, about winning important games, about scooring goals etc etc.
That is why Slater is the real deal, because its all about the football. I must also say the same about young Semple, he never says a word about Scotland Call ups, winning games, serious injuries etc etc...... because like Slater its about the football !!!
On the subject of Piggy Hirst..... i have watched him since 8 years old and he is the most over rated kid i have watched. He has been very fortunate to be pushed on by his dads reputation. He is a decent player, but no more than that !!! He is another one on twitter showing his fancy car off, or videos of his goals or fancy boot deals !!

No..... i am very happy with our future youngsters. Its all about the football to them. CW will just love that about them.

Slater does not do Reeds leg work, they work together and cover each other. Reed often sits and covers at centre half or full back when they step in and go forward. That's called understanding the game and game management

After reading your opinion i have thought about this. They both put a shift in and to say one works harder than the other is wrong. They actually compliment one another very well.

On the subject of Reed. He has been outstanding this year with the 23s. He works hard, stands up and is counted and never shirks a tackle. I hope his future is sorted out one way or another because this lad needs to play league football asap.....
