now that was a proper Yorkshire Darby. Having lost the previous game away 3 - 0 I was expecting a good game and our lads did not disappoint
We had Ramsdale in goal and although we were under pressure particularly in the second half I don't remember him having a save to make. We played with 3 centre backs Wilson, Semple and Kelly. Wilson had a good outing particularly in the first half and must be near to getting back for the first team. Semple and Kelly just seem to get stronger with every game. It's clear they are being encouraged to play out from the back and their performances get better every time I watch them. Together with the wing backs Bennet and Mallon they stood firm apart from the goal which was a bit scrappy.
Scougal, Slater and Brooks worked well to close down and create opportunities for our front two McNulty and Hallam. I thought McNulty was up for this game but he twisted his ankle on this poor surface and had to be replaced by Ti Smith who went on to score two fine goals, well worth a look if they get shown. This was a day for a battle and the skills of Brooks and Mallon were in short supply going forward but with a bit of encouragement they worked to hold the mid field.
A fine game with an effort from Slater bringing out a good save from the Barnsley keeper. And it was good to see our youngsters managing out the final 5 to 10 minutes. Hallum and Scougal were replaced by Hirst and it was nice to see Ford getting on as well. This team is getting hard to beat and is starting to mature.

Looks like we have a game on Wednesday against Bradford so it will be interesting to see what team we put out. This game is the last game in a cup group that we have already won

Appreciate the report, thanks Baw Heid

Just about nailed that little review there, poor surface ?

It'll be much better next season by the look of things ;)

Probably caused McNulty to go over on his ankle but it's good to toughen up or young players

Great report. A friend of mine at the game mentioned the spine of the team Ramsdale, Semple, Slater, Tyler Smith were excellent today. That said he also said that every player was a 7/8 out of 10.

I am a big fan of Ty Smith. Has progressed nicely through the 18s and now on to the 23s. Starting to score goals and is always a willing runner. It was also nice to here Jake Ford came on today. I have watched this lad for a few years and i can honestly say he has never let anyone down whilst featuring for the 18s.

Lastly, the number of scouts at our 23s games is becoming ridiculous. I understand why, with so many good young lads playing week in week out but i do hope the club gets them tied down to the club.

Ramsdale is out of contract in the summer............. Its got chaos written all over it !!

100%agree with you and Wilson and Scougal did their bit as well although it's hard to know the difference. Although Ramsdale had little to do today it would be a great pity to loose him but you can see it happening

Larky, get there first with the reports, we trust you because you have been there for ages.

Big point that Baw.

Any club, even mid -table Prem clubs dare I say, have to invest in their youth system.

Any club that doesn't show a ' Pathway for Youth' sends a message to their young stars ( as well as their young prospective very, very good players) invites the Semples, the Reeds, the Brooks, the whitemans, the young Tyler-Smiths to join that different culture of football which is mercenary, 'see it, touch it, milk it'. Move as soon as possible, worry about 2018 when it comes.

The only way we can entice our young lads to stay with SUFC, mid-table L1 unachieving club, is to make them believe their future is better on the bench or in the first team with us rather than an also-ran elsewhere.

At present we are not encouraging our young lads.

If anyone disagrees with that final statement then please, ple ase convince me otherwise.

Did Brooks score? That's always my first under 23s question?

Thanks Woodward but i cant get to all the games, so i trust 'Baw' to say it how it is. Seems to be spot on so far and i would hate to take all his LIKES from him.

Thanks for that. Really helpful insight. Good to confirm that we're playing proper football at all levels.

You can scarcely believe that anyone was suggesting recently that we bring old Muckanettles Nowt-Fancy back from the dole queue to ruin our youngsters.

Small case response: 'no case - to answer'. Maybe I could suggest counselling though.

EVERTON KEEPER BID REJECTED

Everton have had a bid rejected by Sheffield United for their England U19s keeper Aaron Ramsdale. The 18-year old has represented England at Under-18s and Under-19s and has been on the bench at Bramall Lane for most of the season.

As said earlier we really need to tie him to a decent contract if we're serious about keeping him (no pun). Always looked a good prospect when
I've seen him and a far better prospect than Long.

I do wish anyone claiming our youngsters deserve a chance would add a small section at the end of their post with the words ' If they are good enough' or ' if CW sees fit to play them.'
I am sure those small inclusions would keep everyone balanced on this thread and many others regarding playing the youngsters.

Surely it goes without saying? What manger, with his job at stake, is ever going to put in a local lad in just for the hell of it.

I think you've been intimidated by another one Pinchy's straw men arguments. Who on here has ever said play a young lad just for the sake of it?

On Planet Pinchy, we 'S2 hoofers' are busy corrupting the playing style, forcing Tufty to play local kick and run merchants and we have Basset lined up in the wings for a coup.

For Pinchy, think some redneck backwardsman in Montana, stocking up on tinned food and more ammo in case the 'commies come for him. It's a bit sad really.

Never thought of Pinchy as a redneck. More like Sir Bufton Tufton in an armchair in his club drinking a scotch and soda brought to him on a silver salver whilst he regales the assembled old buffers with tales of "those damn Hoofers" followed by cries of "flogging too good for the likes of them don't you know".

This from a bloke who wants to fill our team with youth players, regardless of quality and claims Little Louis is the best young player we've ever had!

Counselling? Send for the men in white coats...

Calm down dear. I never said "the best young player we've ever had", no wish" to fill our team with youth players" "regardless of quality either". Never said Louis Reed "was the best young player we have ever had".

First 28 words(109 letters) zero correct, maybe a record even for this site. Don't let it get in the way though Pinchy. Absolute no nsense, no, in fact lies. Challenge please Pinchy.

Pinchy, I've just challenged you.,substantiate what you stated please.

You said he was the best 17 year old you'd ever seen at our club. Quite how that benefits us I'm not sure but it was light years from reality in any event. He is now a mediocrity on his way inexorably down to the National League, where he will join countless other "best 17 year olds" all of whom would doubtless be world class if only they'd had a bit of 'encouragement'.

Ain't football cruel, eh?

I do agree with you. Larky has been am inspiration to me and his comments contain so much accurate details. Me its just my sincere impression of what I see. It is nice to see that a few people seem to like what I write
I also like to read the oppositions view on their web page but I thought the report in the Star was very good

I do agree with you about the future that developes for these young lads but knowing a fair number of them all they want is to appear in the Blades first team. Most of them I know are Sheffield born and bread and you would hope that all the excellent work done by the aAcademy coaches shows a reward in a red and white stripped shirt

As a newcomer who prefers debate to argument, and don't know the details of the run-ins on this forum, could I ask you to tell us where your priorities lie. Without a tone of voice or facial expressions to go on, statements on-line often don't come across as intended. I regard youngsters in the club as one the best features of it, and I take great satisfaction seeing the progress of the Kyles, Harry, etc. I wish they played for us, but I still feel 'we' have helped these local lads realise their dream. There was an item yesterday in the Star about Danny Deakin, from Harry's generation, now playing with the likes of Kaka at Orlando. Not what we would have wanted, perhaps, but another local lad living the dream. When you refer to 'a mediocrity on his way inexorably down to the National League', it sounds as if you would rather the player fails than that your judgement is wrong. I hope I am wrong about that, but it is all too easy to read it that way. And I speak as someone who said to his son about 10 minutes into Deano's debut that he would never make a professional footballer. My son posts on here, and reminds of that from time to time. 'I was wrong' can be a great thing to say!
