The U23s are at home (Stocksbridge) to Villa at 2pm on Wednesday afts. This is our final game in the Group Stage of the Premier League Cup. We have a great chance of qualifying for the last 16 knock out stage. A win by 9 (nine) clear goals will see us overtake Villa to top the group. However, a defeat by three clear goals (or any better result) will see us stay above Ipswich & come second in the group. If we do qualify, we've got Derby at home in the last 16.
A bit of a mental week for Villa U23s. They beat Reading 3-1 on Monday (in Premier League 2, Division 2). They play us today. And, they play their last 16 Premier League Cup game at home to Blackburn on Friday. Three games in five days. As today is a dead rubber for them - they're already in the last 16 - I'd expect they'd play a weakened side.
Anyway all to play for for the Blades U23s. Against a side who are flying at their level. (The level above us of course). Played 18, won 12, 36 points.

And, pray for me, there is also an U19 SUFC Futures game listed for Stocksbridge at 7:45pm. It'll take detailed questioning to find out if that game goes ahead, and critically, where.

Anyway. Live teams & goals on my Twitter

And I'll copy & paste what I can to this thread

Yes Looking forward to the game. Any word on our team yet?

keep an eye out for Mungo Bridge (there 15) he must be huge with a name like that!

Not a great game but at least we go through to the last 16 and play Derby next week. Poor displays by Evans and Freeman, both picked up slight knocks early on and seemed to loose interest. Heneghan also started the game but did not come out for the second half. A makeshift back 3 of Graham, Docherty and Semple handled Villa with ease and Eastwood in goal had little to do but pick the ball out of the net once, although he was quick off his line to sweep up a bit of danger..
The Villa coach, using another foreign accent, was urging his players to close our boys down particularly to stop us playing out from the back and they did so well but tired in the second half. This gave us more creativity and we hit the post and Semple had a fine header disallowed for an Evans foul in front of the ref, Stupid and obvious foul..
On the plus side more game time for Evans, Freeman and Heneghan and another 90 mins for Semple. Mallon also played but I don't think he is a wing back much more effective in a roll upfront similar to Brooks
We missed Slater in the middle. This was a game tailor made for him and for Jake Wright , but alas gone to Harrowgate.

Great report from Baw Heid Spot on re Freeman & Evans - both contributed zilch & the team perked up once they'd gone off to see the family & kids in The Vardy Stand. Oh for a Jake Wright Jnr on a day like that.
Anyway - I've written more on my Blog - that was another Double Header Day - four games in two days - I report on the Academy U23s at Stocksbridge & the Futures U19 at Shirecliffe - and BEER

Any thoughts on Luca Colville?
I thought he was broadly OK. He looked comfortable on the ball & was trying to get involved. It's mad this time of year for the U23s. We let kids go to other teams. Either on trial. Or released. Or on loan. And then we bring in other lads, from other places, doing favours, etc. And ..... you inevitably think - FFS - he's come in on trial & he looks worse then him we've just let go. Anyway - Colville looked OK without standing out - as Baw Heid said.

Who what where Espial?

And thanks for mentioning the Bottom Welly, an excellent boozer.

Belated thanks for that Phil. I must admit I had never heard of them.

Personally I think the senior players whoever they are toss it off with the 23’s And let the younger lads down, I get it that they don’t want to be there and don’t want to risk injury but that lets down the younger lads trying to make there way in the game

It looks that way this year but in seasons past George Long and Terry Kennedy were great with the boys as was Scroogle. Read never let us down either This year only Henegan has been decent. I've said for ages that the 18s are the last group to represent the Academy. The 23s are the Reserves and the aim is to give fringe or back from knocks players some game time. It is a vehicle to look at trialists but as Phil has said its difficult to watch when the trialists are way poorer than the lads we have out on loan or let go. The coaches do their best but it must be difficult when its never clear who will be available to play. Its all related to the first team squad, as I suppose it should be
Still enjoy watching the young lads and the two games this week should be decent QPR at Loftus Road and Derby in the knock out stages of the Premier Cup. Just hope this year we play strong teams. I wont manage to be at the Derby game so will look out for Phil's Blog

Aahh Mate. You'll see in due course that I'll be Blogging "from elsewhere". I won't be at the Derby game (27 March). I am currently on my way to London for the Monday match v QPR - I'll Blog that if it goes ahead. But that will be my last SUFC Blog for a few weeks.
