Type of Player

So what do we want the ambitious type of player who is always looking to improve himself or a player that is happy to ply his trade at Championship level?
Every fan wants to see loyalty from the players of their club and that loyalty is easier to give when you are at the top, Giggs, Scholes, Neville Gerrard etc but for an ambitious player in the Championship this will involve a move to the Premiership.
I can understand Killa wanting to move on, I think that he is rather overestimating his own ability but that is another case. He is at the perfect age to get an excellent contract and to set himself up financially. The buying club will also see some resell value in him as well and that makes him also more attractive. :emmy:
Jags was one of our most loyal players but he knew that he had to move on and has proved that he had the talent to achieve at the top and I am sure Man City bought the wrong Everton defender for the money they paid. Jags though handled the media better and I think most fans ould see as a defender he was Premiership class, which can't be said for Killa.

Should we want players that are happy to be here when we are in the Championship? Shouldn't they all be striving to play in the Premiership? Killa is only doing what 99% of people would do in the same situation especially when the career is so short

This debate about being loyal to a club has been around for as long as I can remember. Less and less do you hear of testimonials which suggests to me that the number of "one-club" players is deminishing. In reality the only true loyalists - in the main - are the supporters for just about every player and manager at a club sooner or later leaves. I can understand this for after all it is their profession - although it is amusing to hear them say on their arrival at a new Club that this is the place they've always wanted to be blah dee blah. It's even funnier when they return to a club that they left several seasons before to announce that this was always their favourite club!

You make a good point about ambition versus contentment. I guess that all Clubs will have a mix of the two. Exactly the same can be identified with the grass root teams insofar as your better players are always looking for the better team to play with whilst your less talented players remain and are glad to get a game. Having said that it also follows that prima donas contribute the least in respect of the club's welfare whereas the others do their best to ensure that the club survives.

I do have this rather quaint idea that the vast majority of players - whether pros or ams - once they've put their kit on just want to get on with playing and to perform to the best of their ability but I must admit this will be a moot point with some.

I don't blame Kilgallon or any player for that matter, trying to achieve a higher standard of football by looking for a move to the Premiership.
I have always thought that Kilgallon is a bit lightweight when up against a big tough striker, and contributes to United's hoof ball tactics just as much as the rest, and whilst being good at interceptions and last ditch tackles, he rarely plays much of the 'on the floor' football that he thinks he will be good at in the top flight.
It would be a shame to lose him, but I still don't believe he is anywhere near as good as Jagielka was for us, and I would be more than happy to keep Davies who is still a bit raw, but more robust, and will get better with more games.
If he goes in January, I will wish him the best, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

I fully endorse your comments and I don't believe that Killgallon is that good we have to pay extortionate wages but fair play He wants Premier League football and the reality is that he certainly won't get it under the present regime at BDTBL.
From what we have seen Davies would make an ideal replacement!

These days, an Average Joe can command a decent wage at all levels of football. I heard at the weekend that Fleetwood's top earners are on close to £1K a week and that's one level below the Conference. I know a Rochdale fan and one or two of their players are on a few £K a week plus bonuses. The days of loyalty are long gone and a player will go wherever the best wages are and he has the best chance of success, simple as.

In terms of us, we have to get the blend right, as we did in 05/06. We had a fair few 'home grown' players such as Jags, Monty, Tongy, the old pros such as HMS, Unsy, Morgs and Short and the younger hungrier or flair players with something to prove such as Stretch, Danny, Ifill, Kabs.

With a fully fit squad, the mix is pretty good at the moment and probably only needs one or two but there's a definite shift to younger players which, whilst some will applaud, leaves us short overall IMO in terms of the make-up of a promotion winning team. We were crying out for some experience at Wembley last year and paid the price.
