Two Penalties - Previous Instances?

Portsmouth in the 2nd Bassett promotion season. Duffield, as ever, lashed them both home. Vital 2-1 win.

One of them a scandalous dive from Carl Bradshaw, the other one of the softest pushes when challenging for a header I’ve seen.

However as Portsmouth had tried to kick all our players from pillar to post all game that night no one gave a damm, I am convinced to this day the ref gave us both penalties as he was as fed up as the rest of us with Portsmouths appalling thuggish tactics.

Against Brighton in 2002/3 (triple assault) season - both converted by Asaba.

Edit. As part of an Asaba hat trick in a 4-2 win having been 2-0 down

There was a fantastic video where the local Brighton press interviewed the ref after this game, asking about the ‘controversial’ decisions in the game. The ref meticulously and brutally cut down every question. Don’t think I’ve seen anything equivalent to that since.

That was the match where the Brighton MP was on the radio demanding an inquiry because the referee was from Yorkshire.

The referee then came on the radio and said he does indeed live in Yorkshire having recently moved there from another part of the country!

Wimbledon when Fashanu accidentally handled twice (cough cough)

We were only awarded 1 penalty. No pen was given for the second handball.

There's also:

5-0 v Bolton 1983-4 - Morris scored one and had a second saved (would have scored 4)

2-0 v Bournemouth FA Cup 1990 - Bradshaw and Bryson both missed. Bryson had the rebound crossed to him by Stancliffe and headed home

2-2 v Tranmere 1981-2 - Kenworthy got 2 pens and Waugh saved a last minute Tranmere pen

3-1 v Doncaster in 1982-3 - 2 pens by Morris

6-3 v Orient 1983-4 - another 2 pens by Morris

4-0 v Wimbledon 1985-6 - and again, 2 pens by Morris

4-2 v Oxford 1997-8 - Deane hit the post and Fjortoft scored the second. Simon Tracey also saved a Nigel Jemson pen but Jemson followed up to score.

3-2 v Palace in 2010-11: Cresswell and Bogdanovic both scored pens.

Oh, and Jim Iley missed 2 in the same game in a division 2 match in the 1950s...

The fact that we got 2 penalties goes against the widely held perception that we are the unluckiest and most persecuted team in world football. It can’t have happened.
