My Mrs is away and I started looking back at old records and videos. I can't swear to the precise accuracy of this as I am having trouble reading some of the old tables - but in our first season back in the top tier in 1990/91 - Vinnie Jones and all that - Tufty didn't play at the start of the season. Our record for that season was:-

Played 38 Won 13 Drew 7 Lost 18 Points 46 Average Points 1.2

Tufty played 16 games and in those games our record was:-
Played 16 Won 11 Drew 2 Lost 3 Points 35 Average Points 2.2

So without Tufty our record was:-
Played 22 Won 2 Drew 5 Lost 15 Points 11 Average Points 0.5

Has anybody ever done this analysis before - because an average of 0.5 to 2.2 points per game without him and with him is almost unbelievable?

He is a Blades God.

He's Jake Wright's dad

First post, class forum and the abysmal language from most contributors is superb.

Chris was a cracking player but not really in the Bassett mould, liked to keep it on the deck etc which is why his appearances were restricted. Long story but I wear his old #12 shirt for all the big games, last outing was Wembley. Bringing my oldest (he's 6) on Sunday for his first game, can't wait ....but... if he's still really apprehensive about the noise in the ground then i'll be flogging the ticket on here sat night or in a boozer on Sunday.

Tried to attach a pic of the shirt...hopefully it's worked

Mrs is away and your watching old videos. Emmanuelle and Debbie does Dallas perhaps?

It started this morning with thinking about my first game - watching us beat Cardiff 5-1 in April 71 - Flynny's diving header and Gil's thunderbolt. At my age that is my porn.

So then I watched all the ups and downs on YouTube from 70/71 onwards, and when I got to 90/91 I'd forgotten how dreadful we were at the start. I don't remember much about Tufty as a player, so when I spotted him a few times I looked him up in the stats to see how much he played. That was when the ridiculous stat of 4 times the points per game average with him over without him leaped out at me. We think Jake is influential, but that stat is ridiculous.

I honestly believe his origins as a Manager must have been there then - I bet he was as hard in the dressing room then as he is now. That's why Harry B has always been his biggest fan. I bet he regretted selling him.

Anyway - The Magic is Back at last - just need a striker to head it like Deano now!

I quite liked him, he used to run up the line a lot and work hard, like most full backs he used to get a bit nervous when he went over the half way line so he used to like to knock the ball forward as soon as he got there. I used to stand on the kop in those days so I can only ever remember seeing him from behind

A good attacking left back I remember, could be caught Out defensively at times.

Also could put the boot in a bit as well..

My memory may be playing tricks, and I have no idea what season or the opponents were but I remember him making an amazing headed clearance at the Kop end. Sprinted back towards the goal with the ball heading into an empty net and he somehow managed to head the ball clear

I was a youngster then but pretty sure he was a right back. I remember him as a player who wanted to get on the ball and use it properly. He was a bit short of pace and made the odd mistake on in trying to play, which is probably why Bassett limited his games. Was also a bit fiery.

So good football - check. Passionate - check. Grafter - check. I suppose the basis of what we see now was there in the early days. What we didn't know then was his intelligence and honesty.

Yes full back I meant.

I remember him as a cultured right back, very upright when he ran, could deliver a peach of a cross, good close control, always liked to celebrate with any player who scored, usually being the first to jump on their backs,i think he was one of the 3 who ran to the Blades at Wolves to celebrate, thinking the game was over, and it wasnt ,lol

A top class first post.

Clearly a lurker for a while, understands the requirement to reference Ched and the Desso whenever possible, good use of site functionality. You'll go far sir. Bravo

7th Jan 1989 Cup tie away to Huddersfield - I had to stand up to help him limp past me to get to his seat in the stand; pot on one leg and a crutch. He's one of our own for sure.
How do you upload a video on this site folks?

Cc1 welcome to the madhouse mate.

One of my memories of him was a Sherpa Van Trophy (or whatever it was in those days) match at the Lane around 1988/89.

Might stand corrected but think it was Chester who hadn't appeared to bring any fans and there were only 2 or 3,000 Blades.

As you can imagine it was quiet and as we defended a corner CW was quite vocal shall we say and let off a stream of expletives that everyone at the bottom half of the Kop heard.

Rarely in my 35 years of attending professional football matches do you get to hear so clearly a player's every word of a prolonged foul mouthed rant :D

Before he managed us my memory was of a solid but unspectacular RB who didn't go forward much, after this season my playing memories of Wilder are of a hybrid between Cafu and Kyle Walker.
