Well, I don't suppose anybody's all that surprised that Speed has been given permission to talk to the Welsh FA but the way the whole thing's been handled sure typifies the new "Blades' way" of communication all the way from outright denial through 'unwelcome and unhelpful' to where we are now.
What really does worry me is the rumour that Speed was, quite rightly, using this opportunity in an attempt to strengthen or even define his position regarding January finance. If he was, then I guess it's just a confirmation of all that we suspected anyway, that there won't be any.
This does rather leave us up shit creek. All this speculation about possible replacements seems to ignore the fact that any manager with a modicum of sense would steer well clear of a club whose board is acting like ours is at the moment. Just who the hell can we hope to attract to the club when the remit is to cut the wage bill and save us from relegation both to be done with no funds, no real support from the board and without a full first eleven of players we actually own. Ellis it is then?
Who would want to be the captain of such a rudderless and sinking ship? Who could even trust the board right now? My suspicion is that Speed and even maybe Britton were fed bite sized porkies just as we have been done over the past few years by McCabe et al. As much as I am really brassed off with our owner and major creditor, I could have taken all this if only he had been honest with us and cut out the spin of us being such a well run club. Could we have been run any worse to have arrived in this fucking hole?
At present, my feeling is that they are taking the piss. They really do think we'll stand for anything and won't mind being treated with what approaches contempt. Of course, this could all change with an inspiring appointment and funds in January. Can you honestly see it, though?
I'm going to start taking bets on the first appearance of the words 'significant' and 'substantial' in future club statements.
