Remember having to go through Worksop on the way to skeg or Mablethorpe before the by pass too. Preferred Blackpool for the hols but you are right it was a trek ,we were scared going over the Snake and excited thinking we were nearly there when we passed Belle Vue

Worked in Seacroft for 6 years and got round and about a lot in Leeds during that time - business and pleasure.

Utterly no comparison whatsoever in the 2 cities anymore - Leeds is progressing, Sheffield is regressing.

On the way to Old Trafford for the 3rd round, I was telling my boy about the amusements that used to be on the left of the A57 on the way in.

There was a zoo apparently at Belle Vue too, although I can't remember that - just the amusements.

The funny thing about Belle Vue in Manchester - it's nearly the same as it was 40 years back !

The roller coaster was the scariest one I ever went on ,just what you needed before going on the Snake in Aunty Anns car It was made of wood (the rollercoaster) and was incredibly loud.

If it was in the South east it would be a lot easier to build. Chalk and clay is pretty easy to tunnel through.

Maybe not in my lifetime, but HS2 is coming! And from what I gather, it will take a chunk of my native Wincobank with it.

used to work in Altrincham - pre M60/M67 and by the time I got to the snake I must accept the car got booted - great road before the speed camera vans - which was in position on the day of the 3rd round just after ladybower reservoirs - wonder how many Blades got done!

I found it best cutting off the top corner of the M1 M62
coming off junction 38 for huddersfield taking the A637 for 7 OR 8 miles
after passing through Flockton , after a mile at the roundabout dont turn left to huddersfield go straight on the B6118 to brighouse , follow it to jct 25 of the M62 its 15 miles shorter and cuts out peak time bottlenecks

there used to be a free car park in that triangle at the bottom of Spital Hill/Savile Street which is not that far. Had a wander up there before the Wigan game and it's just overgrown and derelict now. Probably not big enough to serve that West Bar development on it's own though.

When I worked in Bradford we moved to a newly built site and planning laws there said they could only include car parking for 70% of people working there - some sort of token rule to get people onto public transport but there wasn't any worth using for most of us.

17 miles means about 20 minutes ,Glossop at a standstill means about 90 minutes.
Mottram hill must cause the biggest quarter of a mile of roadrage in the country.

Is there all 50 zones up the M1 and M62, have not been that way for a while?
Personally I would always use the Woodhead unless I knew it was really bad.

My white van short cut to Northern Manchester was out through Holmfirth over Bradys Moors ,down into Greenfield and into Manchester ,no hold ups ,bit of history ,nice and scenic and an outside chance of seeing this lass I met at Butlins in 1977 ,looked like Audrey Hepburn my dad said

If you turn right at Mottram hill instead of carrying on in the left hand lane, I'm almost certain that brings you out on the M60 just a junction further down than normal.

This thread calls to mind my worst experience ever of travelling over the Pennines to watch United. It was an FA Cup replay at Burnley, a night match, in 1993 or thereabouts. We'd drawn 2-2 at the Lane on a virtually frozen pitch with a late equaliser from Glyn Hodges. Me and my mate set off in what we thought was plenty of time but it was a wild and windy night and if memory serves a load of overhead lighting gantries on the M62 had blown over, causing the motorway to be closed and all traffic diverted across country. It was painfully slow progress and it became clear we weren't going to get there. I don't think we were within fifteen miles of the ground when we gave up. We then had the slightly surreal experience of sitting in a huge traffic jam listening to Deane and Littlejohn taking them apart - I think we won 5-1 in the end - with numerous other cars in the same jam honking their horns every time another goal went in.

Got back home just in time for last orders.

The following morning, I made a bail application to Judge David Bentley at Sheffield Crown Court. He was a big Unitedite which I'd known for ages after we'd both been on a case at Northampton Crown Court in the early eighties involving Blades fans at a service station on their way back from a match down South. I wasn't sure he'd remember it so in an attempt to ingratiate myself I asked him if he wanted to buy a ticket for the Burnley game, completely unused. He was in an unusually good mood, laughed his head off, recounted his experience of getting through all the traffic hitches just in time for kick-off, sang Deano's praises and commiserated with my tribulations.

Refused my bail application, however.
