Anyone travelling through Glossop or via Woodhead for the Bury game should allow themselves extra travel time for the Bury game tonight. The area has always been a bottle neck especially during peak times but the only back route out of Glossop has been closed meaning you have to use Mottram Moor.Journey time from Glossop centre and the M67 is taking anywhere between 30 & 90 mins to complete (2 miles). It might be different tonight but just thought I would give you the heads up

If Woodhead was down South, they would have had a by-pass 40 years ago.

Not so sure. Have you tried travelling the A31 in the summer?
Also one reason not to do it is to keep numbers down on the woodhead and snake.

Which back route has been closed please and is it temporary or permanent?

I assume it is the one as you drive through Glossop (from Sheffield), past the big Tesco on your right, turn right at the mini roundabout then drive under the railway viaduct. AT those lights you can turn left or go straight ahead. The road to the left will be the one closed. It is not a short cut but has less traffic and brings you out (eventually at the M67 roundabout.

Its the one Grappler has mentioned via Broadbottom think it is closed until the end of the month

Sheffield always has suffered from piss poor infrastructure communications, whether it be rail. road, air or even waterways.
This is a massive drag on its ability to compete with other Northern cities.
It desperately needs the Peak District tunnel, which I believe would transform the region economically.

The Broadbottom works have finished and the road reopened... so the backdoor route through Glossop, Broadbottom and Mottram to the M67 is open again... not that it helps much as those roads often have queues.

Northern Powerhouse? More like Northern Poorhouse. Crossrail 2 anyone? .

Not quite sure where Bury is located in Manchester but might the M1/M62 be easier?

Bury's to the north of Manchester, just off the M66. Depends where in Sheffield you're travelling from; anywhere to the south or west of the centre and the M1/M62 is a long, long way round.

I would have thought so too, seeing as Bury is north of Manchester, just off the M66 (which runs from the M62)!

Unless you actually live north of the Stocksbridge bypass by some way would the M62 be preferred. About 17 miles difference.

Just a thought. Use a satnav. It should take you the quickest route. The quickest route isn't always the shortest.

17 miles means about 20 minutes ,Glossop at a standstill means about 90 minutes.
Mottram hill must cause the biggest quarter of a mile of roadrage in the country.

According to TwatNav, Glossop will add 7 minutes to your journey!
That said, there's delays on the M62 north of Huddersfield!

Sheffield definitely needs transforming having missed out on the 125 fast train line to London and the M62, and then finished off by the mistake that was Meadowhall.

I live in West yorks now and see a lot more of Leeds than Sheffield these days. 20 odd years ago I'd have said these were two fairly well matched cities, but it upsets me to see that there's no comparison now with the way Leeds has progressed. Maybe it will improve when that new development on the Moor is done and they've done summat with that wasteland that used to be a thriving area by the Castle and Sheaf markets.

But what the fuck is that they are doing down by the bottom of Snig Hill? Looks like some sort of fancy garden area being built in an almost deserted area where there is sod all else. Surely that is a waste of money, and maybe therein lies to root cause of the problem?

In my experience it takes longer from Glossop to the M67 than it does to get to Glossop from Sheffield. Coming back the M67 really is a road to nowhere.

Hmmmm.

You do know we have the power to take your 'Wincobank Blade' tag off you, don't you?

I'm thinking 'DirtyLeedsScum Blade' or 'Seatsmasher Blade' has a nice ring to it......

don't get your panties in a bunch pal.

Just for reference, at one point the bypass was actually going ahead, but then it got pulled because some bright spark had fucked up the traffic modelling numbers, which in turn bollocksed the financial case because the cost/benefit analysis was then wrong. I think that enabled some tree-hugging types to challenge it, but i'm less sure about that bit.

But yeah, if this was somewhere in the south-east we'd've had it years ago. Plus the Woodhead tunnel reopened as CrossNorthRail 1 or some such shite.

M67 - what a blessing that was!

Some of us can remember having to get through Hyde traffic lights - pre M67 and all the way into Manchester on the A57.

Worked in Seacroft for 6 years and got round and about a lot in Leeds during that time - business and pleasure.

Utterly no comparison whatsoever in the 2 cities anymore - Leeds is progressing, Sheffield is regressing.

If it was in the South east it would be a lot easier to build. Chalk and clay is pretty easy to tunnel through.
