I totally agree about the Wigley goal, it was a bit special.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Gareth Taylors volley against Forest.

Dean Saunders' throw-in goal was hilarious. Just before he took the throw, my mate shouted "Throw it off the keeper!", I was halfway through telling him not to be so stupid and that this wasn't Sunday League when that happened.

Always nice to see one of the Blades goals against Leicester from 1990 although I thought Wilfs was better especially seeing as Martin "piggy" Hodge got blasted straight in his snout in the build up and couldn't remember the rest of the game. I recently found my old VHS tape out of the highlights of this match which also has on there the old "United" documentary that was on at the same time. I decided to watch it one Saturday night with a few beers. It was coming light when I'd finished and I could hardly stand up to go to bed:p

Ah right fair enough then :D

Do you remember that West Ham game I mentioned? The details may be sketchy because it was my first night match, I was only six!

Yes, 28th March 1994. It was our first win since new year's day and only our third win since August! It was live on Sky and attracted a crowd of around 13,000. We did indeed go two down early on. Whitehouse pulled one back just before HT with that long range volley, Gayle equalised and then Rogers got the winner with a close range shot after the WHU goalie dropped a cross under a suspiciously robust challenge from (I think) Gayle.

That win started off a bit of a run where we won 4 out of six games and took 13 points out of a possible 18. It looked like we would stay up. A win at Oldham on the Tuesday night would have confirmed it, but we only got a draw. Still, will all thought, a point at mid table Chelsea who will be desperate not to get injuries what with them being in the cup final, would probably be enough and easily achievable....

Taylor's goal was on 13//9/97. We won 1-0. It was one of those where a high ball was dropping on the edge of the box and he just wellied it. 99 times out of a 100, it would have flown over the BL stand....

One of the best I've seen is Whitehouse's rocket Vs West Ham. We were two nil down and won 3-2, Gayle and Rodgers got the others. Unfortunately I don't have it on video because it's the season we were relegated.

Oooooh! I forgot that one. It was at the away end, and I think it was a Monday night, because it was on TV. I was on the John Street East terrace. I think Ian Bishop put them 1-0 up with a bit of a belter early on, and then it was 2-0 after about half an hour.

Dane scored just before half-time, and Gayle and Rodger's goals were both fouls ;).

I'm amazed nobody's mentioned the masterblaster by Tri Dellas...Last minute against Portsmouth, about 1997?

Big Tri decides he's gonna wander forward from centre back, the ball comes to him from a headed clearance,he takes about 3 steps forward, about 40yds out....and it flies right into the top left hand corner like a rocket.

Re the other greek,Vasilis Borbokis (or Vasilis Bobhoskins as he was known in my house) -a 30yd free kick in a play off semi against Sunderland comes to mind, which Perez had no change with.

Big Dellas was my Hero and I still wished that we'd kept him.

He really did have a foot like a traction engine

Dellas goal was on 3/10/98. We won 2-1, Saunders having scored the first. The Borbokis play off goal was on 10/5/98. We won 2-1 after being 1-0 down. Marcelo got the other.

Borbokis also got a beauty on his debut against Sunderland at the Lane on 10/8/97.

A deeply disappointing season for all sorts of reasons. We had 26 unbeaten matches in that season, which would normally be seen as more than enough, but unfortunately we drew 18 of them.

We also had an alarming goal drought, when we went from October 2 (3-3 away to Southampton - Falconer 2, Flo) until New Year's Day (2-1 win at home to Oldham - Whitehouse (pen), Ward) scoring just three goals in THIRTEEN league matches, only one of which was our own creation at that, including five no-score draws, and just one win.

Hodgy got our equaliser v the pigs, Whitehouse scored a penalty in defeat at home to Norwich, and a Clarke OG was the third goal, and the only winner, although it was originally attributed to Willie Falconer.

Being humped 3-0 away by Blackpool (then struggling in the third tier) wasn't much fun either.

Hodges did score against Wednesday, but I'm pretty sure it was us who scored first. Wednesday equalised before half time. Those two dropped points cost us dearly in the final analysis!

I remember their goal was particularly soft, and scored by Palmer, but thinking about it, you might be right that we went one up. To be honest, both derby matches that season were terribly drab affairs.

Both goals were scored pretty early on. Hodges put us in front after around 5 mins and Palmer equalised about 5 mins later.

Brian deane lob against liverpool was the best for me steve nicol was nearly back on the line but still got it over him

Having not seen the youtube clip difficult to say but IMO top 3 are

1) Keith Edwards against Bristol( city i think ) - Did a pele but actually scored sending both Keeper and Defender chasing shadows - Note Keith said it was his best goal ever and Reg Brealeys favourite all time goal

2) Steve Wigley - as mentioned

3) Jags V leeds - Timing occasion execution and final result

The Edwards goal was in the game v Bristol Rovers on 14/4/84 in a game we won 4-0, but where all the goals game in the last 25 mins. I believe the "Pele" goal was the last one after Stancliffe, Garner and Edwards had put us 3-0 up.

As I recall it someone played a diaganol through ball from the left wing that put Edwards clean through with a defender in close pursuit behind him. The ball was a few yards in front of Edwards and he hadn't touched it yet. The goalie came out and, though it looked as if Edwards would get there first the defender and goalie were so near that if looked as if all 3 would clatter in a heap together.

The moment of genius was when, with the ball travelling to the goalie's left, Edwards suddenly swerved to his (the keeper's) right, completing wrong footing both goalie and defender who knocked each other over with the ball continuing to travel (now quite slowly) in the diaganol line towards the goal.

The ball was neraly stationary by the time Edwards jogged round to tap the ball into the empty goal from around 8 yards with a big grin on his face.

Well remembered , If im not mistaken as he rolled it in he looked up at the Kop and tapped his temple with his finger in a "up here for thinking" gesture, Class.

I also recall a very tasty chip by Keith Edwards against Shrewsbury at the BL end. Steve Ogrizovic was the keeper, and not the smallest to chip especially when he was not that far off his line.

Suprised none of the older Blades haven't nominated a Woody thunderbolt or direct corner!

i think buxtons bullet header is my all time fave at the moment

That was in the League Cup 2nd round 2nd leg game on 25/10/83. We drew 2-2. Arnott got the other and we lost 3-4 on agg :-(

A goal that should not have stood. If I remember rightly Edwards handled before putting it in. Noone in the ground could believe it when the goal stood. It was an absolutely crystal clear handball. Crystal clear to everyone except the person that mattered - the referee!

Talking of Woody, there was a game at Derby (I think, at least they were playing in white) in the season we got relegated from division 1. We got well hammered, but Woody scored two amazing goals, both from about 25 yards.

Help out Darren :D

To this day I do not know how we managed to lose the first leg. The only other time I can remember a side being so much on top and losing was when we won 1-0 at Plymouth in the 1983-4 season. Plymouth hit the woodwork several times in that match and outplayed us throughout the match. But with only a few minutes to go we broke out, crossed and I think it was Philliskirk who headed home.

20/12/75 - we weren't well hammered - we lost 3-2, which wasn't bad as Derby were the reigning champions and we were rock bottom with a record pf P21 W1 D3 L17!. I believe Woody put us 1-0 up, Derby then took a 3-1 lead and Woody pulled one back late on. Woody's goals are on the Blades YTV video.

The Shrewsbury away game was on 4/10/83. Stancliffe put us 1-0 up early on and the Shrews got their winner in the last minute. The Plymouth game was on 29/10/83 and Philliskirk did indeed get the goal - his first.

After Stancliffe put us 1-0 up, we had numerous chances to extend our lead. kevin Arnott played very well in that game, and we looked like we were the team from a higher division, not Shrewsbury.

Wasn't Hamson's (winning) goal against Liverpool in the league cup in 1978-9 season pretty eye catching, or have I mixed that up with another one?

What about Keith Edward's 'Pele' goal. Think it was around the 83/84 season, possibly against Bristol Rovers at home.

Ball threaded through from midfield for Edwards to run on to. One-on-one with keeper, ball went one side of keeper, Edwards the other, who met up with ball behind keeper & slotted it home. Pele tried that once & missed!!

EDIT: Note to self read thread first.
