20/12/75 - we weren't well hammered - we lost 3-2, which wasn't bad as Derby were the reigning champions and we were rock bottom with a record pf P21 W1 D3 L17!. I believe Woody put us 1-0 up, Derby then took a 3-1 lead and Woody pulled one back late on. Woody's goals are on the Blades YTV video.

McAlister saved a Charlie George penalty in the opening minutes just before Woody's thunderbolt opener. My dad and I were about 6 minutes late in entering the ground and we had missed both incidents. Derby's third goal was an own goal by Paul Garner

Suprised none of the older Blades haven't nominated a Woody thunderbolt or direct corner!

Woody probably would have been in half of my top 20 blades goals since 1970 although my top goal was Michael Brown v Wendy in Jan 2003, it was a perfectly executed volley from outside the box. TC's 40 yarder against Liverpool in October 1971 is my 2nd best. will think of my top 20 and will post it here soon

Paul Garner made league appearances for us in all four divisions. Is he the only person to have done that?

Have you ever heard of a lad called Keith Edwards and someone else called Tony Kenworthy ?
Come on are you the real silent ?

What about Keith Edward's 'Pele' goal. Think it was around the 83/84 season, possibly against Bristol Rovers at home.

Ball threaded through from midfield for Edwards to run on to. One-on-one with keeper, ball went one side of keeper, Edwards the other, who met up with ball behind keeper & slotted it home. Pele tried that once & missed!!

EDIT: Note to self read thread first.
Ah yes I was there can't remember was that his 1st or 2nd goal ... it's an age thing

It wasn't Silent who asked, it was me.

Don't know how I managed to overlook those two! Senility creeping in - although I thought that had more effect on short term memory. Still, I suppose the 1970s wasn't very long ago....

No, Keith Edwards and Tony Kenworthy also managed it. No United player has scored in all 4 divisions though. PG managed to score in 1,2 and 3 and KE and TK in 2,3 and 4.

Whoops... must read the thread!!!

My Dad always swore blind that Edwards once scored the winner against Tottenham, is this not true then?

No, he got one in the 2-2 draw at the Lane in Division 2 on 2/1/78 though. Hamson got the other as we came back from 2-0 down.

Thinking about it I knew it couldn't be true as Alan Cork was the first man to score in all four divisions with the same club wasn't he?

Don't know for sure but sounds likely.

Luther Blissett did it for Watford before Cork, and I assume Robbie James of Swansea must have done it between 1978 and 1982.

Thinking of it, some obscure Northampton player may have been the first person to do it as they went from the 4th to the 1st and back again in the space of a decade.

I think Bristol City did that too, sort of early 80's?

They went directly from 1st to 4th in consecutive seasons 1979-80-1981-82 - the only team ever to do that I believe, but they had been promoted to the first in 1976 and before that had been in the 2nd Division since the 60's.

Actually 1st April 1975 and I'm sure it wasn't that far out :-)

heh well i was about 8 years old at the time, (hence the guess, i didn't realise some folks have books full of results).. it seemed like miles away to me. put it this way, it wasn't just outside the area:)

David Unsworth v Hull has to be up there in terms of importance. Two nil up, looked for all the world like we'd thrown it away and had a concussed Paddy between the sticks for the last twenty minutes or so and up pops Rhino in injury time.........what a moment. I have absolutely no recollection of anything that happened between 7pm that evening and about 9am the next morning

With regards to the "who scored what and when...." debate, why don't we just have an "Ask Darren thread? Having read his posts it seems he's either very very knowledgeable about the Blades, or he has a bank of supercomputers in his underground lair, like a Bond baddie. Either way he's getting facts out at an alarming rate.

Have you got an evil henchman Darren?:D

No, I just have a rather shocking memory for United scores. As I have told the tale many times on BU, in all started when I decided to lose my gut about 10 years ago and started running. Given that it was so painful, I decided to write down the scores from a season as I ran and memorise them - this helped me to focus on my running and forget the pain.

The result of running 3-4 times a week for 10 years is that I know the date, opponents, score and scorers for every United game (league, FA cup, League Cup and the various minor cups that proliferated in the 70's and 80;s) going back to the 61-62 season. My party trick is for someone to name a date and, instantiously, I can tell you the details of the United game nearest to it.

1 of 2 teams. Wolves did it in 1983-4 to 1985-6.

Tremendous on both counts. Clearly you'll be on the next first round of Mastermind then? I think we'd all like to pit our wits against you!

Well, the geeky ones anyway ......

:D
