Who paid the bulk of who's wages though. I can't remember figures but I was amazed what Stewart was allegedly on. We know Hendre will have been on silly money. Clough was doing his cost cutting efforts so I wouldn't be surprised if we paid all Hendrie's and supplemented Toblerone boots too, mainly as a sacrifice to get shot of Hendrie (I don't think he played much) making Stewart probably one our highest ever earners who consistently sliced the ball out of play or kicked it with his standing leg.

That's my main issue with him. I don't mind cheap flawed players. . . In the sense that you don't get Messi from Scunthorpe on a free and shouldn't expect to.

That contract means knack all to Sheffield United though, doesn't it?

If someone comes in with an offer which looks right - three drags on a cig and a 1975 Panini album (13 missing but loads of 'gots') and a whip-and-top (no string) then Murphs will be gone, contract or no contract.

pommpey

Well it will probably be tested this summer if we don't get promoted. If its Board post 2014 then theres a chance he could stay or we could at least get the right money for him. McCabe and his mystic transfer 8 ball and it cuold be 10 bob and a goat as a fee.

Really ? I though he and Hill were the worst full back combination I have seen at Utd ,although Jordan Stewart and Marcus Williams also come into that .

Les Tibbot and John Cutbush could be contenders for the worst full back pairings

Tony Moore was the worst full back ever played for us he was truly shocking.

Tony the council painter ,you are right ,apparently he was a shit painter too :)
Cutbush and Tibbot weren't in the same league of shitness as Hill, McMahon ,and Stewart ,Tibbot was always struggling with a groin problem though. A mate of mine met Stewart out in San Francisco last summer ,I put a picture on here actually ,he is now playing for San Jose Earthquakes with internationals. God knows how hes done it ,he has been unbelievably shit every single time I have seen him play ,for Utd or elsewhere.

He was ok but not a great deal more. Unfair to put him in the Jordan Stewart Hall of Lame.

Wouldn't swap for Brayford, Harris or Freeman though.

The McMahon for Harris effective swap deal is up there with the Woodhouse for Ndlovu + £1m in all-time shrewd deals that conned the other team.

Also up there:

- £1.5m for Andy Gray, paving the way for HMS Shipperley to be a starter
- £1m for Wayne Quinn, who seemed to be a shadow of his former self the minute Eileen Drewery got her hands on him at the England training camp in summer '98.
- £1.1m for Jordan Slew
- £3m for broken-goods Lee Morris

I didn't mind Andy Gray though some didn't like him, one of those players who divided the fans still he was good for 15 goals a season

I think you mean he was good for 15 goals in a season, once. Over the course of his career he has a poorer goals per game ratio than Chris Porter - both overall, and when accounting for his pre-Bradford days when he wasn't always a forward.

He was sluggishly slow, never seemed to pair well with anyone or work well as a lone forward, was poor aerially, far too weak, and was in my view a large factor as to why the football was so poor in his last full season with us. Had he stayed, I'm not convinced we'd have been promoted.

Took a good penalty though, I'll give him that.
