Not sure how strong a rumour this is as where i read it Tonge was described as

"...used to play in midfield but could just as easily be a defender now as he was quite a big lad and was a fighter. "

so could be a case of mistaken identity.

erm, im going with mistaken identity, as tonge can never be a defender (cant tackle and is scared of heading)...since when was he a fighter...lol..

even the seasons of 01-03 he wasnt exactly a player with defending qualities.
