Player Suggestion Tom Cairney

I'd definitely go for Hughes. Wages are high though. £60k a week
I know we all have our own opinions but I just cannot see anything in Hughes at all, I mean what does he do? He doesn't score goals, or get past people, he is no good in the air & every time I have seen him his 3rd or 4th tackle is a booking. Yes he gets around the pitch I suppose but I just don't see anything of value he can add to us. Not a dig at you mate just my opinion.

I think some people need to understand there may well be a shift away from the typical profile of previous player purchases. The club may no longer only be targeting younger players with potential and may well instead move towards more older, ready-made players.

10m in the Championship constitutes a huge gamble, peanuts in the PL, but for £10m i'd expect some level of future prospect and profit potential, plus he's susceptible to injury. If we sign him we will be his last club.

Does anyone think we'd get close to £10m for someone like Fleck, who is in a similar bracket in terms of age/ability/position?
Fleck is nowhere near the ability of Cairney, its Cairney's injury record that is the concern.

Then the quoted 10m is a lot for the essential one year rental of a player.

for context this was c50% of our Annual wage bill when we got promoted. it’s not pocket change/ a punt at this level.

Why not get some youth prospect on loan from a Man U / Chelsea / Liverpool / city? Plenty have proven themselves more than capable in the championship.
In further context, we are supposedly due to get £91m in parachute payment next season, which would be about twice last promotion seasons annual wage bill.
He is the sort of player we need, if the one season rental gets us back in the PL, I'd say it was a risky investment worth making

I like both players but considering his age and injury record Cairney is a bit overpriced
Should be nearer to £5 million, then we might be interested
i agree with you there jj 5m max for cairney maybe an additional 2m if were promoted 7m wouldnt be a bad price to pay if he helps us go back up still think this one might be a goer

Where have you made that figure up from?
£91M is likely to be the total payments across all three years, not just next season.

Apologies.
That's last seasons prize money

20. Sheffield United

Actual League Position: 20th
No. Of Paid TV Games: 10
Estimated Prize Money: £96.9m
Estimated Rebate: £5.9m
Total: £91m

If he was younger and did not recently have a bad fitness record and was not similar to Norwood I would be more enthusiastic

Although I have a preference for Younger foreign prospects overall. Cairney would be a Marquee best of the Championships best signings that could single handedly rejuvenate our midfield. Cairney with Fleck and Berge/his replacement and that is certified dominance within the Championship. ⚔️

It’s a question of resources to me.

Is cairney a £10m fee and £20k a week better than actually seeing what Freeman can do with his chance and buying a promising centreback/midfielder and winger??

Our tv money will be eaten up pretty quickly. I’d hazard a speculative guess we still owe somewhere near 40m/50m in transfer fee instalments on our PL signings. That’s without any transfer this year.

This has already been accounted for with previous spending just like we spent a considerable amount on our return to the PL before a ball was kicked. We will receive 3 years parachute payments instead of 2 thanks to avoiding an immediate relegation so the first championship payment is approximately 40m. That’s what we have to base our seasons finances on

Fulham arent going to get £10m for him no matter how much they would like to.

If they really are bringing in Hughes as a replacement for him then they are going to be forced to lower their expectations and start looking at what offers are on the table, which i would imagine to be around half that figure.

His wages on top would make me think this is still a no go for us.

agree no way they will get 10m for cairney however i think slav might bring him in if the deal is right for us would be a gamble but cairney has played his best football for him

Spending 5m+ on a 30year old injury prone player is never a good idea no matter how good he is

Say what you want about our signings in the prem but we can still sell a lot of them on for a profit or a small loss which is good business

Signing 30+ players on big money is a shit or bust tactic and we have seen how that has gone @ Pigsboro

It used to be called busy doing nothing.

The obvious counter even though it was a long time ago would be Paul McGrath - his knees were so knackered he hardly ever trained yet performed in games.
He was class, how many league games did he play for us?

Didsy for a closer example.
There really was only an upside with signing Didsy as he was on a free. We've not got the same level of upside if we buy Cairney for £10m, if he was on a free I totally agree.

I'm also a bit concerned that he only played 10 games last season, and has had a knee injury causing him to miss the second half of last season.

If we had money to spend it would be a daft signing, we have minimal Money to spend so hopefully our management team will not even consider it.
Old
Injury prone
No resale value

But if any Utd player DID develop 'resale value' then everyone would have their shoes off in the car park if the club ever tried to sell him.
Resale value is a myth unless you're actually happy to sell your best players.

selling players as a means of recycling money is the nature of the football business.
We sold DCL to fund our rise from The first division and will no doubt at some stage sell Ramsdale and Berge to invest in younger players

One would hope that would be when they're a bit older than 23 if that's the rationale

I'd take cairney but not at 10m

Plus wages.
If he gets us back to the PL then great but I dont see him fitting in with our current strategy of signing younger players who may have resale value.

I would take him on loan. Although the chances of that happening are slim.
