Player Suggestion Tom Cairney

Value is often determined by how much the player is worth to the selling club, rather than how much someone is willing to pay or the quality of the player.

For example, Didzy probably is worth ten million to us because he’s just scored nearly ten goals in a premier league season where his team scored about 20 all season, and more importantly we have nobody like him, he’s under contract and a long term replacement would not come much cheaper than that. If Fulham want Cairney’s wages off their books and they have an abundance of players in that position, they would probably be willing to negotiate for 5 million because if they stubbornly say ‘15 million or no deal’ it’s no deal and nobody gets what they want. They aren’t in the strongest of negotiating positions in that respect.
But why would they want to sell him to us?

I think there's very little chance we're going to see any big transfers, certainly none of £10M. There's just no logic in it when you have parachute payments for wages and 5 loans available.

I can see Cairney wanting to play with Slav again. I think Parker utilizes him in a more defensive role. Cairney may request a transfer if the rumour of Slav wanting him our true. If requested, the fee should be much less than the quoted 10m.

give em 7m up front in 2 installments and the other 3 million if we get promoted

Possibly nearer £40k a week?

In that case, with chunky bonus programme, it's doable...

Quite excited now. He's exactly the kind of player we need. Get Coubillay in as well, keep hold of Berge if we can, and all of a sudden we've got a strong engine room...

Just looked at that website and had a browse at other teams.. says that Jared Bowen is on £96,000 a week and England international Declan Rice on £1,500 a week.

Calling bullshit on that one.

I agree there's little chance of us spending big fees but relying on loans is a mug's game, or at least it has been for us in the past. The occasional Goalkeeper or defender? Fine. Building a team around them? Disastrous.

Depends who you get and how your plan your strategy..

For the real high level youngsters we should be talking about keeping them longer term, ie if we're promoted we can further aid in their progression etc so we don't need to replace.
For the others, those who are Premier league quality but unlikely to break through with their parent clubs, loans with a view to buy.

Pure loans who we're expecting to just fill a gap for a season should be avoided unless we have someone at the club who we believe can step up but it's just too soon.

well think you better get ready for it i can see up to 4 loan players coming in

Got a funny feeling this will happen and be our marquee signing.I know it doesn’t make sense in some ways but it keeps cropping up.It reminds me of the Brewster rumours in a way.

It'd make perfect sense to me personally. We desperately need some nous and ability in midfield. Cairney has that in buckets.

Agree but I was more talking the age and injury issues.
I'd rather have an older, experienced head in a crucial part of the pitch myself. Regarding injury issues, I think flecks got similar really. They want 10m but I highly doubt they'll get it. 10 as a starter to finish probably around 7.5 to 8.

I think everyone gets your point but if the same logic had been applied, Utd's best player over the last 3 seasons wouldn't have been signed.
Agreed it’s the fee not the player that’s the issue imo. Didzy came on a free so the club risked very little. If the fee quoted for cairney is even remotely in the ball park then we’d be spending somewhere in the region of 30 - 60 percent of our whole budget I’d imagine which is a massive risk if it doesn’t pan out.

We would be better placed going for Hughes ourselves in my opinion. He’s a Good player and 4/5 years younger too.

you pay money for cairney and you’re getting him for 2/3 years max.

I like both players but considering his age and injury record Cairney is a bit overpriced
Should be nearer to £5 million, then we might be interested

I thought the plan was to get promotion this year?
After that Cairney will have served his purpose and will only play if he can prove himself good enough for the Prem.

Cairney is the best Championship player I've seen live. He was majestic in both games against us in 17/18.

Then the quoted 10m is a lot for the essential one year rental of a player.

for context this was c50% of our Annual wage bill when we got promoted. it’s not pocket change/ a punt at this level.

Why not get some youth prospect on loan from a Man U / Chelsea / Liverpool / city? Plenty have proven themselves more than capable in the championship.

10m in the Championship constitutes a huge gamble, peanuts in the PL, but for £10m i'd expect some level of future prospect and profit potential, plus he's susceptible to injury. If we sign him we will be his last club.

Does anyone think we'd get close to £10m for someone like Fleck, who is in a similar bracket in terms of age/ability/position?
