Selling our most saleable asset/best player at the start of the season has been a big factor in our under-performance in the last two years. Maguire's departure probably cost us promotion in 2015 and, with Murphy, surely we'd have at least made the Play-offs this season.

It's a pattern we need to break, but who is our current biggest asset?

I'd be surprised if our resolve to keep Che Adams isn't tested before next season. He's got explosive pace, is as strong as an ox and is a good finisher. If he learns how to be a good pro he's destined for the Premier League - hopefully with us!

Setting aside his current ability:

If there are offers over the summer what price should the club accept for Ché?

Suppose:
  1. he is offered the chance of first team football in a higher division
  2. on a higher wage
  3. there is a bid
  4. we reject it
  5. he hands in a transfer request
Should we hold him to his contract?

It's a fair question, if we accept the maxim that "every player has his price."

My starting point is, don't sell until an equal or better replacement is lined up. Any fee accepted would need to buy that player - preferably with some change.

Regularly selling your best assets and either not replacing them or bringing in players of lesser ability is, simply, bad strategy.

What if his contract states that we have to inform him of any bid/s and it is his choice whether to move or stay?

The blades would not necessarily accept the highest bid , but the one with the biggest down payment , highest monthly payment and what sell on clause we could agree .

With the money floating around in the premiership , clubs will more and more stock pile young players picked up from lower divisions .

Young kids can and will become millionaires overnight . We are a league 1 , always been a selling club , I think we will get another season out of Che , even on a loan back.

I can see any fee being undisclosed , and it would be around £800,000 to £1m depending on the above.

Can you see any of our directors bring able to negotiate with Daniel Levy , say if Spurs were interested.

I think the point about replacements was the main issue with Murphy.

I think selling him was the right decision. Furthermore him signing a new deal and handing in a transfer request optimised financial returns for the club. Didn't it?

What didn't happen was a replacement. Maybe more accurately, and certainly more generously, what didn't happen was an immediate replacement.

Instead we got the trimming down of the squad, investment in wages, and a longer term plan.

When we sold Murphy we weren't in a one-out one-in position.

With a smaller, more focused squad I think this is one-out, one-in is much more practicable. And if it doesn't happen then questions can be asked.

If someone offered £1.5m for Ché I'd discuss it with him and maybe try and up the offer.

Will he go on to light up football? Who knows? There's definite potential. He could, just as easily if he makes the wrong choices or is in the wrong environment fall by the wayside. Wasted talent. It's a judgement call.

Thing is unless something extraordinary turns up I think it's in his best interests to stay here. He's developing as a player and a professional all the time. Yesterday in particular he used his body on several occasions just like Billy does. Then there's his defensive cover, his link up play - again noticeable yesterday (he picked out Hammond for his shot), being part of a squad that's growing together, and plenty of other reasons.

All good points illustrating that it's a far from simple decision or calculation.

Oner thing in our favour is that he does want to play first team football. From reports he came here because he had that chance. I think Newcastle was an alternative. Also, he's local-ish.

We won't sell him by default. Because nobody will bid for him.

possibly true - can well accept someone might try a cheeky bid, depends on our resolve or what is in his contract.

Think Adams has shown he has an awful lot to learn - not convinced our present management can make even him better.

Not convinced they have made anyone other than George Long a better player - and would expect that of George seeing as he is still relatively young - although the stupid error v Southend last week and the dropped catch early doors yesterday says to me the kid hasn't learnt the Boyvcott way on concentration.

I'm not sure Adams is that good yet, he's a long way from showing he has a footballing brain though he has undoubted skills and strength and scores certain types of goals, not all types.

Yesterday I rated him 8 but my season's average for him would be around 6.

If we are offered £3m plus this summer - snap their hands off and sign a partner for Sharp who can contribute 15 goals and 12 assists. That would cost way less than £3m and we could spend the change on a spine for the team.

Thing is we won't get any bids above £500k.

As a fan it shouldn't matter what price we could get for him, it won't be reinvested into transfer funds for the manager to use.

Che is the only player I hope we don't lose in the summer. He's getting better and better and I can see him really taking off next season after a full season of experience as a professional footballer.

Totally agree with all of this.

I think people like the idea of Che Adams rather than how he's actually played this season.

For me he still had to prove he can consistently cut it at this level.

The thing is, it's only in the context of our currently poor team that Adams is being seen as a potential target for other clubs.

In reality, despite the occasional flashes of potential, he's hardly the next Kyle Walker or Jags, and he isn't going to be.

Any move upwards and he'll languish on the bench at a 2nd Division team at best, at this stage.

I agree with that apart from the last sentence. There's a ridiculous amount of money coming into the PL next season and, say, £2m will almost be loose change. It wouldn't surprise me if a PL took a gamble on him and offered £1m+.
Or even one of the relegated clubs with their parachute money, or a Derby or one of the other clubs that seems to have money.
Generally, I think the whole of football is going to be insane next season, even more mindblowing than this season, with some real surprises in store. I hope we can crack it next season so we can enjoy the madness as we push towards a return to the championship, perhaps passing Villa or Newcastle on their way down.

I wouldn't accept anything less than £3m that's the point. The other point is he's worth about £500k at present. (IMO)

This is the kind of thinking that has led to our demise over the years.

Che can contribute 15 goals and 12 assists next season. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

All set against the backdrop of us never reinvesting monies received on replacements.

To be fair Pete, when a club is losing up to £1m per month the cause of that is mainly player wages. just because it doesn't go on a transfer fee doesn't mean it doesn't go back into the player costs pot.

The problem is we never line up any replacement or reinvest any money wisely so what makes you think we will start now?
