Yeah, until Reuben said he didn’t want him?

I can imagine Reuben Selles studying videos checking out McBurnies quality and concluding he’s not good enough.
I can understand that because at times our fans used to joke about McBurnie being such a talentless basic footballer…some called him a donkey.
His best quality was defensive headers….however for some reason he was never as good regards attacking headers.

True story….I was in Tenerife a few year ago and met a group of Glaswegians of different age groups, all Celtic fans.
When I told them I was a Sheff Utd fan they asked me what I thought of McBurnie.
Told them he sometimes lacks quality but he’s a handful and defenders in the PL struggled to cope with him.

They said they’ve watched him playing for Scotland and they can’t believe how poor he is. They were being serious and said he’s one of the worse players they’ve ever seen wear a Scotland shirt…saying he always has shockers wearing the dark blue shirt….altho Scotland were a struggling team back then.

Comparing Selles to Wilder….Wilder is more old school and realises that quality/ ability can be over rated.
Sometimes you need players who have the right character and mentality, the will to win and always give 100%.
Wilder will have seen that McBurnie is a bit of a joker and has a positive effect around the training ground.

Really think our big problem last season was the players were mentally weak, no characters, no leaders….and this is one of McBurnies strengths.

Just read the BBC web site and the Hull manager said about the McBurnie transfer.

‘We signed Oli just 3 days before the season started but I first spoke to him in June”
‘We got lucky because Chris Wilder at Sheffield United is his father in football”

This strongly hints that McBurnie was delaying things hoping to rejoin us. However his main desire was re-uniting with Wilder.

That hurts even more 😫

They are now interviewing the Bosnian manager of Hull on Talksport radio.

Apparently they were under a transfer embargo and could only bring in free transfers.
They mentioned that ironically it probably helped them because they brought in McBurnie on a free transfer and he scored the winner.

The Hull manager said “the McBurnie transfer took a long time because he was set to join Sheffield United so we had to wait….but eventually we got him”.
You can only blame the owners, if they had stuck with Wilder he would have definitely persuaded McBurnie to come back and that's 19 more goals and not loosing the first five matches. If's and buts - we all know its true!

Selles not signing McBurnie on a free was madness. He used that slot for Ings instead.

Of course Ings of 5 years ago no question who you would have but that's like signing Zidane to play now too and it's where managers need to show wisdom.

Weird scenario though because had he signed McBurnie there's a chance it would have extended his tenure here.
And let's be fair that still would have ended badly.

I'm a wilder fan of sorts but the big thing last summer wasn't changing manager. It was who too. Selles was not what we should have gone for.

James Bord really (expletive) up with his AI driven model it does make you wonder if he set everything up to mess us up and buy the pigs, that said if CW had gone McBernie wouldn’t have come anyway but this season has cost us dear very dear I’m so infuriated about Selles just look at his track record failure at every club he worked at how he or Bord sold that to our board and owners I’ll never know!

When hull beat the pigs in the playoffs a few years ago I was on holiday. I sent my pig brother in law an anonymous postcard with a picture of a tiger. He says he kept going downstairs to look at it because he couldn't understand why someone had sent him a postcard of a tiger. After a week the penny dropped.

It's fair to say, they aren't the sharpest knives in the box.

The thing we have to offset, say if Wilder didn't get the sack, would he have brought in McBurnie and Bamford? It's difficult to say if we would have still lost any of the 1st 5 matches under Wilder. The sides played in the league games under Selles had 1 promotion side and 2 playoffs sides so not easy opposition when trying out new formations, combinations and players. Hull had a start of Coventry (0-0), Oxford (3-2 Win), Blackburn (0-3 Loss), Bristol City (4-2 Loss) and Swansea (2-2). Even though McBurnie was fit in 2026 he missed 8 matches towards the end of 2025 due to a calf injury. The major loss for us was the defence especially in the 2nd half of the season after losing McCallum and Mee (MIA/injury). It is also about the link up play, it was frustrating at times last season with how long we passed it about and ultimately lost it. We would have unlikely got rid of Robinson either so our main CB would have been him, not sure on what other targets would have been there, Bindon was a Selles signing and had the links from previously playing under him. All of the CB's weren't signed until late too

Can't stand Hull but pleased for McBurnie. The main reason that I'll always harbour a grudge against that inept, useless piece of shit Selles, is him refusing to bring McBurnie back. Imagine where we'd be with McB's goals, instead of having Cannon running around like a headless chicken? It might have even been us that he scored a last minute winner for today.
It wasn't that selles refused to bring mcburnie back , he was training with us but he refused to sign for selles because he didn't rate him and didn't want to play for him simple as that
