Thoughts from the Peterborough game

There has not been a single signing since our new and experienced Head Scout was appointed. Let's judge him and the manager over the next few months.

Before the Scout was appointed our manger had a 50/50 record on transfers: Sharp, Edgar good. Woolford getting better. Hammond what he is. Sammon v.poor.
Our player recruitment has not been the best for quite some time from my recollection, i'm not bothered who's in charge of it, it just needs improving and fast.

Posh fan here in peace.
I thought the difference between the two teams yesterday was the desire to win and unfortunately some of your players didn't seem interested.
We had six players out there yesterday plucked from non league football, technically not the most gifted, but the one thing they showed was passion, commitment and they ran their socks off.
Perhaps a lesson to be learnt before wasting your money on old players with big reputations and egos.
I hope we get to play you again in the play-offs

I take it you missed the first half, mate?

We showed plenty of desire but faded in the second half and didn't pressurise your shoddy but strong defence no where near enough. Oh, you scored some well taken goals against our week defence but not taking nothing away from you, good game and good luck.

I suspect Sammon was a done deal before Adkins joined.

Which baffles me about this modern game and the way things are done but I suspect you are right. NA wanted to sign Sammon same as Clough ? o_O. In the old days wasn't it up to the Manager who he wanted to sign ?.

I don't know to which of our players you are referring Posh although Sammon has a desire to win, he's just crap. If you are referring to our two subs, then I would tend to agree with you. Think yourselves lucky that SUFC continue their time honoured tradition of wasting our money on old players with big reputations and egos, thus leaving teams like yourselves to sign the young hungry talent, as witnessed yesterday, Washington very impressive. Interesting comment re play-offs, after our two games this season, I think you would have seen us progress 5-4. Anyway, well done for your win yesterday and good luck for the rest of the season.

"Didn't seem interested" is a bit of a surprising comment. I think they are "up for the job" but as you say "old". Well they are not old but certainly older than your lads and limited against strong runners with pace, particularly in the second half.

I was impressed with a number of your players with No.10 and No.11 outstanding. Washington's goal was a "worldie". The West Ham lad looked different class, was that his usual level? Defensively you looked uncertain but got through it with just the two goals against.

Who put the squad together? Does Ferguson deserve most of the credit?

I much prefer it when you say it as it is, mate :D

On a more serious note, i wouldn't say he's crap, i'd say he's a decent League one keeper.

Long isnt good enough.

Surely to get out of League 1 you need to have players who can perform better than League 1 level.

We desperately need a new keeper.

I don't necessarily disagree, I just don't think he's 'crap'.

Coming 'in peace' doesn't give you a free reign to write shit and slag us off ,we were all over you in the first half ,enjoy your day in the sunshine ,I remember wiping the floor with you at your place but didn't feel the need to go on your website or radio station (oops you don't have one) and patronise you then. I too hope we get you in the play offs and piss all over you and your sickly manager as we usually do.

centre back, auxiliary forward, holding midfielder??

Not sure what you mean but I would always count loan signings as important as full signings, the long term ones particularly.

If you're suggesting what we need now I'd say pace up front and in midfield; players who can drive forward and run at the opposition. Pace and mobility, youth, hunger and optimism.

  • This week the Jay McEverly horrible foul wheel of fortune landed on 'dive in and miss both man and ball'.
  • We really know how to concede a good goal.
  • Playing Collins as an ad hoc centre forward towards the end was nice. It made a change to Higdon and Baxter - our ham hock centre forwards (I'll let myself out).
  • Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Give Sheffield United a Sammon and he'll have an absolute fucking mare.
  • Watching Jose Baxter try to run fast is infuriating, embarrassing and funny in equal measures.

This performance ( second half ) was sent to us by the benevolent football gods just to remind us that despite a couple of recent better performances, we still have far too many absolutely ineffective players, are shit defensively, can't score to save our lives and have little pace.

Anybody talking about retaining dreams of automatic places needs to let me know what they're drinking because I'm buying a barrel, of it !!!

Currently little hope of anything other than a half-hearted exit from the play-off semi-finals, particularly with the most recent "hints" regarding the almost certain anti-climax in the JTW.

UTB & FTP

Samuelson the winning goalscorer. 18 year old Norwegian lad on loan from West Ham since Nov 2015, went back 2/1/16. Played 5 scored 1 assist1. Signed for Shammers last June from Man City Elite Squad.

Laurie Wilson signed on loan from Bolton a day before the game.

Correct. As 'slick' as we looked in the first half, how often did we test their goalie? A lot of what United do is 'shadow play' whether it's pretending to want the ball from a throw (when their body language is screaming 'I don't want it!') to the hesitancy to shoot because they don't believe in their own ability, to the half-hearted tracking back and utterly shit use of dead balls. It must be a cinch to scout United as we always set up wrongly and are incapable of enforcing what should be home advantage. When the board went up with '6' on it, it seemed to cause unnecessary excitement. It could have fucking said '60' and we wouldn't have scored. Our goals? A penalty and a bizarre own goal.

Coutts’ free kick was saved. Edgar’s header. Sharp’s pen. Sammon should have had a pen before that. Don’t know if keeper got owt on Sharp’s effort that hit the post. We created plenty in that first half. In fact, we were excellent. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite make it count. Just wasn’t our day and we switched off a couple of times at the other end but I saw more than enough to suggest we’re on the right track. Just hope the Man U/Wigan quick fire double doesn’t knock all the wind out of our sales.

Collins up front won three headers in 10 minutes that I can remember. How many did Sammon win while he was on?

But did any of those headers go to a teammate? For all Sammon’s limitations I thought we looked worse as a team when he went off. He ran the channels at times offering McEveley an outball when he was under pressure and winning throw ins high up the pitch. Don’t get me wrong though, I would much rather have someone like O Grady alongside Billy. I just don’t think Sammon is as bad as people make out and for me is a better option to partner Billy than anyone else we have (with the possible exception of Done when fit).

Positives:

Highly worrying:

Posh were missing several key players.

Who were they missing? Washington, Maddison and Oztumer were playing. Players I didn’t notice were Anderson, Bostwick and Nthle but I don’t know if that was through choice or not.

People’s perception of Adkins’ signings changes week on week. A few weeks ago some were saying all 5 were terrible signings. Most of the time people have said only Sharp is a good signing. Personally, I think Sharp and Edgar are good players for this level. Hammond and Sammon are OK and give us a bit more muscle than we had before but have their limitations. Woolford has been very poor in the most part but is now showing glimpses of improvement so could yet prove a reasonable acquisition (Not convinced yet though).

Funnily enough, after Bradford (probably our best win of the season or one of), when Sharp, Sammon and Edgar had scored and Woolford claimed an assist, I don’t recall Adkins’ recruitment taking too much hammer.

As you say, the results of the scouting (if we have anything in the budget to bring people in), will be seen and judged in this and the next window

I would have left Sammon on, Grafikhaus as I think poor as he was, he was better than Adams and Baxter. I would have liked to have seen JCR come on too, their left back was struggling against Billy so I'm sure JCR would have given him even more to think about.
The problem being any manager does not know how shit his subs will be???? Changes had to be made

Yeah, thanks for that innacurate and thinly disguised slagging. Now peace off.
