As a reminder, the team which started the game v Cardiff where we secured promotion: Kenny, Kozluk, Short, Morgan, Unsworth, Montgomery, Jagielka, Tonge, Armstrong, Shipperley, Webber.

'18 team would out pass the '06 team, winning 2-1 only for the '06 team to equalise in the last minute.

Just in that starting XI v Cardiff, you have seasoned professionals with tons of PL experience in Short, Unsworth and Shipperley. Then players who enjoyed a PL career after they left us - Kenny, Jagielka (England too) and Tonge.

Obviously we can't predict the future's of our current team but none of them have any PL experience and how many have experience promotion to the PL? - Sharp, Norwood, Stearman, Clarke?

We have something good at the moment and hopefully we'll only get better, but 10th place finish is the highest we've finished since 2010. The season we got promoted was our 4th consecutive top 8 finish (3rd, 8th, 8th, 2nd).

Don't get carried away just yet.

Its a simple question with a simple answer, today's team would win.

Of the 2006 team only Jags is still playing above this level. Tonge is at Port Vale and Monty was seen smashing in screamers in the Australian Leagues. The rest are retired.

Of the two sides in their prime, 2018 would win, but there would be a few knocks, bumps and bruises afterwards.

I like posts like this and just comparing players would say '18 but hang on a second...
Kenny love or hate him was brilliant, Jags top quality even though he seems to be a midfielder in that team and we all know what Morgan is capable of
There's speed in Kozluk, Jags & Armstrong that '18 can only dream of...
'18 would still win but the Championship today is the demon spawn of the Premiership and a team which (I feel) would've strolled the league 12 years ago is up against teams which have spent in tens of millions being assembled.

We’ll never know but I would be tempted to stake a small wager on the current team. I think they’re better organised and have more technical players than the 06 team. The division is also more difficult/competitive now.

Man for man, this team is significantly better (and as with all Blades, I have a great deal of affection for the 2006 squad.)

But despite my dislike for Warnock and my love for Wilder, you still have to say the former is the better manager.

So I find it tricky to say who would win the match itself.

06 team - more streetwise, could grind out results and we were better upfront. Let’s be right though, the league wasn’t as strong then.

18 team - more cultured, and more exciting to watch. Still a little bit of naivity. A good striker and a couple of months to settle down and the team will arguably stronger by a considerable distance.

The league has grown a lot since then, it's a much better standard.
To be honest if we'd put the side we have now in that premier league we'd probably comfortably stay up.

I think it would be close as 2 good teams but I feel wilder would win, 2006 had some good players like you say & I wouldn't mind that morgan in middle of our defence now, we played to our strengths & were a quality team you dont get bad promoted sides but football in quality terms I feel is higher level than It used to be. I said when we got promoted 12 months ago that there are championship sides with bigger budgets than the teams we playing in premier league

reason im handing it to 2018 is that this team is more technical more attacking 2/3rds are better team. that barometer was the Cardiff game on easter Monday where we did dominated Warnock Cardiff tactical approach, if we take half of our chances it would've been comfortable victory.

Imagine if we'd have hung on to Billy Sharp instead of selling him to Scunthorpe in 2005. He'd probably not have featured in the 06-07 promotion team, but he could have been that striker we were missing in the PL the following season. And if we'd stayed up that year who knows where we'd be now.

Valid points but I have to question Tonge enjoying a Premier League career.

Two starts before he was left out of the Stoke squad. Pretty sure he didn’t enjoy his time up there and should probably never have left us.

Bloody hell. I didn't realise that. Having just checked, he only played 12 times for Stoke in the league.

Warnock's promotion team would win 1-0 with a shot from Webber cutting in from the left and it being deflected in after hitting Shipperly on the arse. Even though Wilders team dominated the match with Clarke missing 3 chances and Billy having a goal disallowed for offside.

Warnock "Ive got a great group of lads, we never gave up and we got what we came for."

Wilder "I think everyone can see what my team are about. We were clearly the best team even though we didn't get the result we wanted."

Two very different sides and very difficult to compare. It'd be a great game for sure! Personally I prefer watching this team than Warnock's team but that said we played some very exciting, fast football that got results under Warnock. One thing Warnock's team had over ours was pace, but they didn't have the class that we have in the current side, bar Jags and Tonge - on a good day.

I'll say one thing though, I'd certainly chose Wilder over Warnock - hands down, both as a bloke and a manager! Saying that Warnock was a great manager and he's had a great career and will be sadly missed when he calls it a day.

I loved Neil as our manager back then. But when you look at the footage of that season. You can sort of understand why people didn’t rate us much...... In comparison to Wilders team, we did look quite “agricultural.”
Although Chris Morgan is a Blades legend, the sight of him putting his big Barnsley boot through the ball would really wind me up today.
