This lad Diego?

There's a fallacy about his performance in the Preston game. He was anonymous for most of the game and only came to life when we were on top for a spell. For the rest of the game, as in all he was in all his first team appearances (and I've seen all of them) he was well of the pace.

However, that was then and now he's scoring for the under 21's and although a totally different player it's hard to see why he's not getting a game when Sammon is.

Sean, also seen the games Diego has played in .

The situation with Sammon is a good point . Let's not cut our nose to spite our face . Adkins needs to give Diego a go , and see how he performs ( he must have been tried in a behind closed door friendly , if not why not ).

Adkins like Diego has everything to gain and nothing to lose . If Diego succeeds , fantastic for all , if he fails , we know why Adkins has not been picking him.

Let's do the best for SUFC.

UTB,

So Wilson, Clough and Adkins all have the similar opinion on Diego, talented but has an issue with commitment to being a pro footballer and attitude stinks, yet in Diegos opinion it's always someone else's fault.

It'd be interesting to know what his team mates think of him, surprising his under 21 colleagues were picked on Saturday yet he wasn't, maybe getting his head down and training hard would go a long way.

Interesting that juve etc haven't come knocking, infact in that Star article it appears a loan spell in non league fell through.

Adkins and Clough are very different managers in terms of style, and both seemed happy to give youth a go – Adkins even more so. At some stage we have to stop asking "what's wrong with the managers since they aren't picking Diego?" and start accepting that it's probably actually the player that isn't doing enough to warrant a place in the squad.

This. A million times this.

The conspiracy that started with Wilson, continued with Clough and now with Adkins to deny poor Diego the 'justice' of 'a fair chance' really does run deep.

Either that or all three of them who are around him more than the average fan, know a bit more than the average fan about why he's not starting.

I'm pretty sure Wilson did attempt to give him a chance as he brought him on a couple of times alongside Kitson (Colchester at home?) just before he went on international duty and got injured.

not really. it's the fact that he keeps banging the goals in for the back up teams and getting rave reviews that has me wondering.. Wilson rated him and put him in the first team squad until he was injured.

Didn't he get an assist in his first 5 minutes of first team football - a cross/shot which Kitson tapped in at the back post?

Diego has shown more in his left bollock than Sammon has in his whole body on the football field and that's just in his snippets of game time he's had.

Diego is still not up to speed needs more game time in 21s just cus he scores a few goals doasnt mean he deserves a chance in front of others who have been involved all season, how would jake Wright feel
Who has been playing well all season and as yet hasn't got the call. Diego needs to get his head down and continue to perform well,if he does that it would be impossible for Adkins to over look him, he's got to put it in on a regular basis,3 or 4 games is not sufficient.

2 substitute appearances wasn't it?

He hasn't come in for him since taking over at Chesterfield either.

I don't really know why clubs don't just have a complete ban on players posting on social media.

They only ever post a load of shit anyway, like the rest of us do. I'm sure they'd cope without it.

I don't understand how they get away with it. If i started to criticise my employer on social media, i would at the very least be disciplined.

How many consecutive games does he have to play well to get in the squad ahead of the one and only Connor Sammon? Who must be performing outrageously consistent to stay in the squad then.

Sammon is physically fit Diego is still trying to get there if he didn't get the fan base he has, maybe he would get his head down and earn a place.I like him too and want him to get there but it's all about hard work not just talent in the modern game.

Sammon is physically fit
Sorry Finners, I nearly choked. Diego would still be more effective just being half as fit coming off the bench, Sammon is wasting a chunk of our budget.

Sammon also doesn't work hard and has no talent so where do we go from here? :)

If Diego gets into 1st team squad so easily he's never going to learn he has to work hard to get what he and we want in the future. Being so talented from an early age has really left him at a disadvantage as talent alone gets you no where in the professional game.He has lost 2 years due to injury and they were years he would have learnt to put a shift in.It's catch up time for him as he has to learn that you earn a place in the squad with hard work allied to his
Talent (which is not in doubt ).I like you have high hopes for him but he will get no where without putting a shift in ( not just for 2 or 3 games but a few months ).l wouldn't compare him with Sammon as he is not in the same league as Diego. ,Sammon does put a shift in but he has been the least effective of Adkins signings, quite baffled really what he brings to the team. There's no way we will take him at the end of season ,the fans will see to that,

Good post but where has it come from that he isn't putting the hard graft in? He must be doing something right to be scoring for the under 21s, you can't score goals at any age without working hard to do so.

Suppose it's the definition of working hard . Did Keith Edwards work hard . Scoring goals win football matches . Every good striker has to be self centred and focused . I have no idea but scoring at u21 may be easy compared to league 1. Adkins should give him a chance by a run in the team or on the bench . It would prove how good he actually is , and he and we would know we're the lad stands . If he ain't good enough get rid . Simple but try him first . We have nowt to lose anyway .

Exactly! I don't want him starting, i want him in the squad instead of Sammon. It would save us money and we honestly wouldn't be any worse off performance wise.

I take your point but Diego has to learn that nothing comes easy in the professional game.

Walker and Co at RS , should ask Adkins , will they ever be a " pathway " for young Diego , and if not why not .

Simple answer to a simple question would suffice . Save a lot of conjecture , on whether or not he is the Mr Big Billy Bollocks .

Ruthless game football . I would give him a go , if he doesn't cut the mustard , fuck him off and get rid.

Whilst Sammon is having it easy! I can see why players get a tad cross when they see someone who plays in their position who are not very good to put it politely. What Diego shouldn't have done is aired his views via social media, this upsets people for some reason. He should've perhaps took the manager to one side and had a chat this way as someone else has already mentioned.

Wiz , as in any walk of life , it's not only the position , it's the money there are on .

Sammon has made a good living by being bang average , and that's being polite .

I didn't mention the money side of it in my post due to Sammon and Diegos' age difference, I thought it was irrelevant for the point I was making.

It's genuinely disappointing that he hasn't pushed on in to the first team as there's no denying the potential he had, and I'm sure the initial ACL injury is the root cause of the lack of progress.

I went to Rome for the England v Italy 6 nations game. When I was in the pub before the game I was talking to a guy from Sunderland, and mentioned I'm a blade. The first thing his said was "Diego? You've got that Diego kid right?". His sons used to play in the youth leagues and they would rave about him, saying he was literally the best player they've ever seen- he'd pick it up at one end, take everyone on and score at the other. He couldn't believe Diego was still with us, let alone not even making the bench, such was his reputation amongst the youth leagues.

Some say he's got a bad attitude but he's clearly desperate to play and prove himself- how many in the first team at the moment can say that? Che's attitude has been brought in to question numerous times and he's also struggling to live up to his early promise. Who's to say Diego won't have more of an impact than him after a run of games?

I don't think United are in a position to just throw a potentially great player on the scrap heap , if Diego was showing enough of his Talent Adkins would have him in the team like a shot .It's not as though we are scoring goals for fun .I don't think there is an agenda against Diego, crikey what would the club do to have a player like TC putting bums on seats, ! No he is obviously not doing enough yet to win himself a shirt. STick at it Diego and it will happen.

I'll save you Walker & Co and Adkins the bother. I've added in the odd sentence, but all of the Adkins stuff has been gleaned from what he has said when interviewed on De Girolamo, and his approach to playing the youngsters.

Q: "You've given the like of Whiteman and Calvert-Lewin some games in recent weeks. Diego De Girolamo has been scoring goals in the Under 21s of late – before the season's over, might we see him given some game time?"

NA: "I've made it clear over the last year that our commitment is to have a path through our youth team for players to get into the first team. That's what this club is about, and it's what I'm about. I'd like to think I've worked with young players who have gone on to do very well. I've said all season that we've needed to reduce the squad size so that we can create that pathway, and now we've had a number of players in recent weeks that I've been able to involve in the matchday squad.

"One of the first things when I arrived last summer as you'll remember was that I wanted to speak to all of the players here and give everyone a clean slate, and Diego had been out of the picture and was out of contract. We made it clear then that we thought he clearly has talent, which is why we gave him a two year deal, but we also made it clear that it's also important for us to have people with both the attitude and ability to do well for Sheffield United Football Club.

"Diego's been unfortunate with injuries in his time while I've been here. That's part and partial of learning what it takes to be a professional football. Up till recently, he hasn't been consistently fit. But it's not just what you do when you are playing but away from the pitch too – eating the right foods, going to bed at the right time, giving yourself the best chance of performing. But also giving your maximum in every single training session. That's the kind of thing that I'm talking about because that's what it takes to make it in the game."

Q: "But is he doing that for you? Would you consider giving him a place on the bench ahead of Conor Sammon for example, who hasn't scored lately and is only on loan till the summer?"

NA: "Conor's been very patient, and has also been consistently putting in the graft in training. That's why I gave him the opportunity the other week at Millwall. Now things haven't always gone for Conor this season, but he's always worked hard and I feel still has a role to play this season. He and Diego are very different players, and I've made it clear that I've wanted to give Billy & Che a run together."

"We have a lot of confidence in our young players here, at Sheffield United Football Club. That's why I've been looking to get more involved in the squad lately, those that have displayed the professional qualities we're looking to build the team around going forward. Attitude is the big thing for me. Yes, we want athleticism and people that can get round the pitch. But the biggest thing is having people who are hungry, who want to improve, learn, and get better at what they do."

"All of the players here have to work hard. We have a set of youngsters involved in the first team here that are hungry and want to learn, and sometimes they'll make mistakes. But that's only natural, and they'll learn from these sorts of situations in the arena."

Cheers for that.

So is he trying to say he's not training hard enough, eating the right food and going to bed on time? Jeysus! Is he stalking Diego or what? :)
