This Hoof Style

If your watching us play atm and the word your getting is “hoof”, dem 👀 need testing.

We are a passing possession based side.

A slow, ponderous one, but possession based nonetheless.

Trying hopefully punted balls high and handsome is part and parcel of a Wilder team simply to mix things up to give the oppo a different test periodically during games.

But you can’t have it both ways.

Pissed off cos of tippy tappy sidewards and backwards stuff AND hoofball ?

Nah !

I've no problem with hoof if we win the second ball and chiefly, know what to do with it once we've got it, which is currently a really big problem.

New CB, some sort of midfield creativity and some mobility up front. Hopefully there's a young gem to be unearthed from the Prem or our scouting rabble has found their passport underneath the takeaway menus and spare keys in the shit drawer to go and find someone we can afford from the Eredivisie or Allsvenskan.

More than happy to see how it plays out.

With the caveat, a side wanting to or seemingly trying to play possession based football doesn’t surrender it to such a level, regardless of the two mid table “solid” teams and recently promoted team it comes up against. We also have a pass completion rate percentage which is floating around 58%. It’s pretty poor.

All this with the backdrop of what’s been the best pre season in memory (according to wilder) and that we’re in a good place. It’s like calling a cat a dog at the moment, sure it’s got four legs but I’m not convinced as of yet.

If they aren’t listening then surely its on the manager?

His job is to spend all week drilling it into them - if they do their own thing that’s worrying

Is the reason these lads ‘want to play for the manager’ because they know he’ll do fuck all

Imagine Pep giving instructions and players don’t follow, benched or gone

Boys club innit
Agree.

1 - what are we doing all week that we then don't do Saturday?

2 - when we don't do it wtf is anyone doing about it?

To he fair he probably isn't telling them to that - but that's because he isn't telling them to do anything.

When there is absolutely no system or tactics then defenders are going to do what they are paid to do ie. Stop goals going in. If they whack the ball up the other end of the pitch they can't concede, and what the strikers do with it isn't their problem.

My sons play in U9 and U7s. Even at this age you can see the teams that are coached well and the ones that aren't coached well or even coached at all. The similarities when watching Wilder's Sheff Utd teams are actually embarrassing, it's so amateur. He's simply plonking a bunch of seasoned pros out on to the pitch and leaving them to their own devices in the hope they'll do something.
I think this is what gives me the bloody pip most. There are good players here - a bit long in the tooth some of the, but experienced pros. That they can’t string together two or three passes suggests confusion about shape and tactics, rather than a lack of skill. Moreover, the team as a whole don’t look fit enough, or fast enough in deed and thought. These responsibilities lie with the coach. Full disclosure: not a Wilder fan, and I may be guilty of cognitive bias here. I also agree with some posts on other threads which suggest that, whilst it’ll be an ugly season, we probably won’t go down under Wilder (unless there’s a big points deduction). But I think it’s hugely unlikely that we will improve athletically, or tactically under CW. It’s going to be a bloody turgid season.

We absolutely aren’t a possession based side. We only have the majority of the ball when the opposition lets us & sits behind the ball, usually in our home games.

As soon as a team presses us we toss long aimless balls down the channel. A possession based team doesn’t do that.

We’re a badly coached team with no discernible style of play, and have been since the last Prem season.

It’s not even the Warnock/Bassett hoofball of “gerrit fo’ward” which I’d largely be in favour of, it’s the “fucking hell just get rid of it” kick it in the air shit because we can’t defend a press and have no pattern of play to work the ball up the pitch.

If this is the best we can do after a good pre-season then we’re doomed.

You can,t moan about Hoofing and then moan about you goalkeeper playing it out and bulding up play

I'll tell you who we do miss from last season who was a very good player on the ball Tyler Bindnon

We are screamong out for somoene like that not just somoene who wil hoof it

I wouldn't even mind being a low possession counter attacking side. 4-4-2 is a good counter attacking system in theory. In reality though when we get the ball we never seem to have an outlet, we never manage to stretch the opposition, we don't even manage to shut down space down the middle to force turnovers.

Whatever Wilder's trying to do right now it's absolutely hopeless football completely reliant on the opposition not being clinical enough to convert their chances.

We are less than half a dozen games into the season and making starting line up choices on fitness, really? This lot can't keep up with other teams for more than 15mins, can't break a press, can't pass the ball when under pressure, can't keep the ball under pressure so resort to passing backwards until either one of the full back or the keeper hoofs it downfield. The first 10mins showed how poor Cardiff's makeshift defence was, good job we got two goals because after that a team straight out of League one gave us a real going over, how we hung on for a point I will never know.
League One is calling, Leicester fans thought it could never happen to them, but it did, and it could happen to us too. The nightmare is we could swap places with the pigs and spend at least a decade as the poor team in Sheffield.

It’s not a lack of fight, it’s the worrying and consistently placed underlying stats in comparison with the rest of the division.

Pass completion rate - 23rd
Possession - 23rd
Shots on target per game -23rd
Big chances - 18th
Accurate crosses per game - 23rd
Touches in opposition box - 23rd
Corners won - 23rd
Tackles per game - 23rd
Xg Expected- 19th

What we seem to be good at (I’ve tried to find positives here)

Saves made - 7th
Successful long passes - 10th
Possession won in final third - 3rd
clearances per game - 3rd
Interceptions per game - 10th

Ranking so low in almost every fundamental attacking, possession, and control metric tells me that our team is starved of the ball, completely dominated in midfield and more than often under siege. It also highlights fairly passive defending, relying on the need to stay in shape, rather than engage opponents we chase shadows in our own third.

That said it’s three games. I suppose

This is telling, isn’t it. It feels to me as if we are attempting to emulate the 92 point season but without the personnel to do it, and certainly without enough game changing talent.

But, as you say, we are only three games in, although things do need to improve quickly.

havent got a problem with going long from cooper too many stupid goals are conceded by teams playing out from the back our problem is weve nobody up top physical enough to either win headers or hold the ball up think one is the only striker weve got with that sort of physicality i would have liked us to bring a target man in this window

The real big problem we have is, we dont have 1 player capable of playing long ball dinosaur football.

We seemingly are not recruiting for it either, more worryingly is hes had a pre season with the squad we have and all hes come up with is to hit it long and defend in a shit 442 formation. And plan B when we get over run with the 2 midfielders in there is to switch to back 3 and shove on rest of our midfilders.

Not sure what micky Collins brings to the table, hes not helping freshen up the tactics or back up plans (thats if hes having an input or just not being listened too).

To be playing this style you need a player like McBurnie who can get on ghe ball and hold it up
