This “basic” way of playing football

I heard one on YouTube say “Sheff United just knock it around sideways, then work the ball on to the wings and cross it in, that is what they do over and over again”.

Isn’t that basically what citeh do? Seems to work for them. Yeah they have top quality up front but they aint got Bash and JOC.

How many systems and formulas are actually in football?
I see basic as a compliment as it can be repeated and players can fit in to it. What sets us apart at times and makes up for a lack of talent is desire and risk.
We will give it a go when others will move on to the next match with some well rehearsed media duties. “It’s a difficult place to come, a very physical team ...etc”
As far as Garth goes...we have no show ponies or “big names” that he knows about so it’s easier to dismiss us. The TWAT!!

Was talking to a bloke at work today, said it was a good point at the weekend, but we won't stay up because......

This is the clincher.....

We have no 'Marquee players'.

I asked what he meant by this and his response....'well nobody cost 50m'.

This is the Fifa Fanboy shit we have to put up with now we're in the big league.

It's a bit like me mam's meat and potato pie in that regard. I once asked her to write down the recipe so I could make it myself. She couldn't write down the recipe because she'd never consciously thought about it. She just did it. But she'd been doing it that way for years and no one else can make it quite the same. It's "basic" - for sure. But "basic" - done well - takes some beating.
Meat and tatty pie mmmmmmmmmmmmnnnnnnnnnnnn

Pass, Run, Cross, Shoot. That’s it basically

Man City play 'basic' football. Get the ball to the midfielders, triangular pass it up the pitch, roll it into the box for Jesus, Aguero or Sterling to feed off the scraps

Liverpool play 'basic' football. Gegenpress, dispossess, get it to Salah or Firmino to kick it into the net

Tottenham play 'basic' football. Use Sisoko, Son or Eriksen to run at the opposition with the ball, get it to Lucas or Kane to kick/head it into the net

It's 'basic' and it's effective. What it isn't is Sheffield United.

If Spurs (for example) had the potatoes to have Eriksen ping the ball across the park sixty yards at knee height onto the advancing feet of Danny Rose, if they had Vertonghen suddenly darting up the left flank to provide overload or if they had Harry Winks digging the ball out in midfield to lay off to the channels or just shut the opposition down then pundits like Crooks would be pumped so fucking hard a kitten couldn't climb it. It would be "Yeah, you can see the genius in Pochettino's vision and the way he has this Spurs team controlling the game ... oh, hang on Gary ... aaaaaaaargh ... arrgh ... oh God ... phew ... wow. Pass me that beer towel, Alan."

But because it's Sheffield, its shit.

He got a job as a pundit a lot of years ago when the BBC were trying to achieve an ethnic balance. I remember thinking at the time that he was a very poor choice, but there was not, at that time, unlike today, much of a pool to choose from.

One can imagine:

Head of BBC Sport (football): Well, Garth. Thanks for the interview and the showreel. We'll let you know."
GC: So, have I got the job? When do I start? I could be the first black man to present Match of the Day.
HoBBCS: Erm not yet. We've six other applicants
GC: Oh yeah? How many of them are white? As a black man ...
HoBBCS: Erm ...
GC: All of them. Except me. And I guess that disproportionate balance discriminates against me, a black man. You do realise that during my long footballing career as a black man ...
HoBBCS: Fourteen years? 375 games?
GC: Yes. What about it? Are you saying a black man can't have an illustrious career?
HoBBCS: Of course they can. Viv Anderson played nearly 600 games, 30 for England. Cyrille Regis 614 games. Clyde Best about five hundred. Brian Deane six hundred and ...
GC: Yes! YES! Okay. Okay. I believe you are STILL being racist just naming black players. It's discriminatory. Against me. A black man.
HoBBCS: Did you want to talk about Bobby Moore? Peter Shilton? Gary Linekar? Alan Shearer ...
GC: This is wholly discriminatory and now you are projecting colour onto sport. I can have you sacked. I'm a black man, a footballer and I'm pretty cross.
HoBBCS: It's not that, Garth. We've watched your showreel, You're pathetic. You talk bollocks. You don't know what you're talking about. You sound like you're pissed and you look like a potato in a shirt.
GC: Right!

It's so difficult to stop because teams don't know when we are going to do it.

They cannot set up for 90 + minutes in order to nullify our wing backs and over lapping centre backs.

On Saturday when Basham got forward in the first half to cross to Robinson Chelsea were just not prepared for it.
Basham took that and turned it across brilliantly, I was well impressed.

Nope.

Just wish we’d show our style throughout the game instead of the second half or after conceding a goal.

I was told football is a very simple game over complicated by most modern day coaches. When I first arrived in Germany in the 80's we played a zonal system. It was daft, a player would get totally bollocked/ dropped for stepping out of their zone, regardless. Modern day coaches try to legislate for all eventualities and make it difficult for players. The grief Mourinho gave Shaw for not following his instructions was one example. Why Wilder is different is that he gives freedom to players to go for it. Just look at who was steaming in at the back post when we equalised on Saturday. Baldock and Stevens often end up in centre forward positions. It's not regimented and as such cannot be easily legislated against.
So it is probably considered basic as there are no constraints placed on the players and is not over regimentalised. That doesn't make it shit, which I think, idiots like Crooks and Mills don't realise. The system works for us because the players all fight together as a team and would run through walls for Wilder.
Wilder and Knill are something special, dare I say it, like Clough and Taylor.

We’re not basic. Basic is Warnock. Basic is Pulis. Basic is not knowing anything about us and guessing based on the last time you saw us play, twelve years ago, which is what I suspect Crooks did.

For a bloke that probably had to work really hard to become successful, I’m surprised at how complacent he seems to have become.
