He got a job as a pundit a lot of years ago when the BBC were trying to achieve an ethnic balance. I remember thinking at the time that he was a very poor choice, but there was not, at that time, unlike today, much of a pool to choose from.
One can imagine:
Head of BBC Sport (football): Well, Garth. Thanks for the interview and the showreel. We'll let you know."
GC: So, have I got the job? When do I start? I could be the first black man to present Match of the Day.
HoBBCS: Erm not yet. We've six other applicants
GC: Oh yeah? How many of them are white? As a black man ...
HoBBCS: Erm ...
GC: All of them. Except me. And I guess that disproportionate balance discriminates against me, a black man. You do realise that during my long footballing career as a black man ...
HoBBCS: Fourteen years? 375 games?
GC: Yes. What about it? Are you saying a black man can't have an illustrious career?
HoBBCS: Of course they can. Viv Anderson played nearly 600 games, 30 for England. Cyrille Regis 614 games. Clyde Best about five hundred. Brian Deane six hundred and ...
GC: Yes! YES! Okay. Okay. I believe you are STILL being racist just naming black players. It's discriminatory. Against me. A black man.
HoBBCS: Did you want to talk about Bobby Moore? Peter Shilton? Gary Linekar? Alan Shearer ...
GC: This is wholly discriminatory and now you are projecting colour onto sport. I can have you sacked. I'm a black man, a footballer and I'm pretty cross.
HoBBCS: It's not that, Garth. We've watched your showreel, You're pathetic. You talk bollocks. You don't know what you're talking about. You sound like you're pissed and you look like a potato in a shirt.
GC: Right!

Two weeks later:
"And now on BBC1 it's Final Score with Barry Fartpipe and Garth Crooks ... "
