Not my words but a comment from a set of Rochdale fans watching the United fans demonstrate at the end of the match yesterday.
It's true and I fear McCabe is reverting to the behaviour of the Weir appointed summer when we recruited the likes of Febian Brandy, Stephen McGinn, Sean McGinty and Jasper Johns. Its seems to be feast or famine and the appointment of his men in key football/transfer positions rather than a independent football man that both owners would sponsor seems an indicator of the future. Especially the retric of his investment of the past.
I do feel for mccabe as I think his intentions have been good but very poorly executed and he did help get rid of McDonald in the early days. I think he has lost enough money in the past to have lost his drive but he thinks our luck (!) will change even without major investment. In some respects United should get promoted without major investment due to the size of gate receipts compared to the rest of the division. Only Bradford come close in size of crowds and they charge about £100 for adult season tickets and a tenner for kids. But I do think we require much better players compared to the rest of the division (This requires the right investment in the right players.) Due to the 'pressure' of playing for United and invariably clubs raising their game due to the bigger gates home and away.
Which brings me onto the fans. I don't condone the behaviour of the fans to other united fans at Rochdale. That is out of order to fellow Blades and we need to realise we are very passionate fans and we need to stick together. But i do think there is a theme developing of questioning the fans in the media from Shields and Buchan that is ridiculous just because of a small percentage of numpties and little kids. United have the most passionate and loyal fans in the country bar none, 20k in the fifth season in this league, thousands going away to 'stadiums' we've visited too many times. The number of semi finals we've reached for a club of our playing quality are down to the vocifirous support we receive. Southampton, Forest, Charlton recently, Blackburn in 93, Coventry in 98, Leeds in 03 all inspired the team against better quality players. So get some passion and results on the pitch and the supporters will do the rest and we wouldn't see some of this frustration from the fans we have recently. I will quote David Bassett again about the Blades from the crazy gang book '...the following years were fantastic. I wouldn't swap that experience for anything - a great club and unbelievable fans'
