So a poor Barnsley side rock up for the only away game of the season that they actually take fans to, have virtually zero shots on target and escape with a point.

Much like Gillingham we really should have won this, without playing anywhere near as well as we did in that game.

Pretty much sums up our season, just lacking enough quality to put average sides to the sword.

They celebrated liked they'd won another nothing cup that no one cares about and our play off hopes are all but finished.

A bit of a limp way for things to fizzle out
and both teams will most certainly be battling it out in this league against this season.

Agreed it was there to be won in the first half.

Decent save from their keeper to tip that shot on to the post.

Basically, we bottled it.

Gills 2 Shrews 3
Vale 4 Rochdale 1

If we'd have won, everything would have been there to play for, big time.
But, first big test we get after the upturn in form, & we freeze like startled rabbits in the headlights.

Blown a great opportunity.

In the context of this division, not sure that Barnsley are a poor side as evidenced by their incredible run from bottom to top 6.

That said, we had many chances to win that. If Billy and Che had their shooting boots on, we would have won at a canter. Sums the season up.

I'm sorry but I can't agree with a single word of that, 2 bang average teams playing out a bang average 0-0 draw for me, neither side shone.

Meanwhile, bang average Scunny deal with the pressure, win 2-0 at Peterboro, & keep their promotion hopes alive.

Adkins, in his post-game interview talked about "expectation" & "tension" in games like these. We didn't deal with it. The tension was too much for this group of players & this manager today.

We've been playing well over recent weeks. Today, when it mattered, we were poor.

Today was an interesting game. As said above, Barnsley defended well and were one of the more disciplined and effective defences we've come up against since dropping to League 1. Barnsley defended narrowly and forced us to play a central game. We should have been using the wide channels, Done was in acres of space most of the game and hardly got any service. Now to be fair, every time he did get a yard on the wing he fluffed it, but maybe that means he needed more service? Blades played into their hands, far too narrow, weak passing and no pace down the middle, which was easily mopped up by a solid Barnsley defence.

Funnily enough, how often the past few years have we complained about sideways passing? And now this game, where we desperately needed balls out to the wings, to stretch their defence, to give us a bit of space? Didn't happen nearly enough. Adams and Sharp were snuffed out by effective physical defensive players who hardly put a foot wrong all day.

All our forward players - Sharp, Done, Adams, Flynn and later on Woolford and Sammon - None of them impacted the game and most had a bad day at the office. First touch was always too heavy, they were always a yard in front of the ball across the 6 yard line, they always got the ball lost in their feet. It just wasn't their day.

We were decent at the back, with some notable exceptions. Their disallowed goal was due to our defence faffing about too much in the box. Why try to flick and pass the ball out of danger when you can just hoof it? Would you rather concede a goal or a corner?

Barnsley came to settle for a draw and nick a 1-0 if the opportunity arose. I had figured that out on 55 minutes. Adkins never seemed to twig that, sticking with the same failing slow build up pass and (barely) move strategy for the full 90. He subbed McEveley off on 88 minutes for Sammon. That is nowhere near adequate to win a game that essentially had our entire season hinging on it. Why wait so long?

0-0 was completely fair, neither team did enough to win or even score, but this game will go down as yet another opportunity to nick a win and get us nearer to the top 6. Our season in a nutshell.

On a more positive note - Basham had a solid game out on the right. I was surprised when I saw him there, but he played out of his boots all game. McEveley was also really good. Baptiste, as always was effective and bossed the defence. If we can keep hold of him next season that would be huge. I don't care how much he costs. Sign him up. League 1 is a sandpit to him. Hammond nearly got himself sent off. Remember that tackle he did that got a yellow? That was fucking awful. He's a liability, and frankly adds nothing to the team. Get rid.

Sorry for the long rant. A bit pissed on the train home and staring season #6 in the third tier.

The thing is, I thought that we played to the limits of our abilities today.

But therein lies the problem.

Indeed.

On our bench there was no attacking game changing subs Adkins could bring on. Which meant we had to stick with two strikers having bad games.

Frustrating game as I thought Barnsley were rubbish today.

I do not know what match you were at but how can you claim we deservrd to win this match?, we did not even turn up. The goal they scored should have counted there defence bossed Sharp and Adams who did not have a shot on goal. The most annoying fact about today was the fact that not one Sheffield United player showed any urgency every time time the ball went out of play not one player rushed to get it back and get on with winning. In fact your statement (we really should have won this) is about as shite as we played.

Our strikers are too fat

can only catch Barnsley now if they draw 2 and we win 2 by 3 goals and scunny and gillingham dont win in their last 2

would take a lot of luck now

but until its gone

I fancy scunny now though
theyve really done what we shudda , those 2 extra points could work for them

Weird there's lots of differing opinions about the game today. I thought it was a good typical derby game that was quite open. Either side could have won but thought the draw was a fair result. Barnsley's defence did well but were helped by Billy having an off day. For us thought Baptiste, Edgar, Jay, Basham and Coutts all had good games. Thought Flynn did quite well too. Generally our lack of pace was problem particularly going forward but we still had chances to win. Think we got away with the goal that was disallowed and the officials again were piss poor for both sides.

i thought we were really flat. amazing for a game of such importance. basham apart the team only became intrested once the 4 mins ET board went up

I take it you didn't go today

Their goal was rightly disallowed and that was their only proper chance on goal. We hit the post and created enough without having the quality to put the ball in the net.

Those are the main reasons I think we should have won.

"There for the taking" applies to the season as a whole the players and especially the manager have failed to perform at a level that would have gained promotion. We knew the limitations of the squad most fans expected a better performance from NA.
