Quite Smiffy 10 goals in 7 = 1.43 goals per game on average on the face of it BUT REMEMBER half of those goals were scored in one game. That means we average 0.833 goals per game in the others played - which means that if we concede, the best we can hope for is a draw - on average.

Not being turned over BUT worrying that out of only a handful of chances offered to the opposition we concede a very high percentage of them, regardless of whether they came from errors or not. Perhaps a better judgement of our defensive capabilities would be the number of clean sheets - the stat on that is 2 from 8 (inc League cup) and it's not as though Donny offered much after that first double save from Howard the other night. Not very impressive if you take Charlton as the yard stick to aim for from last season.

No so much panic here yet but the trend observed to date is far from impressive.
It may take time to gel but the signs so far are that we do not have the capability to alter it.
  • Where is the flair going to come from?
  • Who can beat a man and get to the byline to put in a telling cross?
  • Where are the bursting runs from midfield that undermine a well organised defence?
  • Who can deliver a quality dead ball for our forwards to score from?
  • Which players are capable of an intricate passing exchange that can unlock a tight cordon of defenders and open up a clear goal scoring opportunity?
  • Where is this legendary pace that we are supposed to have signed up this season?
  • How can we overcome the physical battle which many teams in this division pose?
These are not new questions - they have reamined unresolved for a long, long time and there is still no promise of them being answered with the players pulling on the shirt this season.
Too many of the same type of player - Williams / Hill / LJF or think of Porter / Cresswell / Kitson or you can lump Miller / Ironside / Gallagher / Westlake / McAllister together. There are certainly no answers to the creativity question outside of McDonald (but he is central and offers no width) and and not enough cover at centre defense.

I am not comfortable with the current form, nor with the mental attitude displayed (levels of concentration and conviction) especially compared to the opposition faced (who so far have supposed to have been lesser quality as a group) as evident in the possession stats compared to the goals conceded. I am concerned that when we come up against a better side - mentally tough and properly prepared that we will get thumped. Put it this way - I am concenred for our chances at Yoevil this weekend but if we were due to face Tranmere I would be even more apprehensive.

I guessed you would use the “5 in 1 game” point, but it really does nothing to support your argument. Sure it was against the same opposition, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that we worked the keeper in that game. So whilst your averages calculations are nice, it shows a GCSE level of Maths... thats all it does. J

The stat that you need to look at is, goal difference. We’ve scored more than we’ve conceded. So far at least.

Talking of stats and trends, my understanding is that you need more than just 7 data points to analyse and form a trend (SixSigma recommends 25).

But, your questions are valid to an extent and I would be interested to look at them in 3,5, 13, 18 games and see how we progress, my thoughts are that we will get names in the frames to an extent.

But many of the questions, as you say have remained unanswered for a while, hence why we’re languishing in League 3.

I’m not unhappy with form, but we need to get improvements.

I’m actually more apprehensive about Yeovil than I am about Tranmere. Are Tranmere that much better than last season? I somehow doubt it. But what I do feel is that the league has lost 3 of the better sides (yes that includes the pigs) and the standard has dropped.

Arguably the desire to be on top of our game week in week out has also diminished as not having the Piggies to compete with has made the division less interesting

What nonesense. It is like saying form does not count. Like saying Tranmere go into their game tomorrow with a clean sheet. It is like saying some numpty office worker has the chance of becoming a senior manager, after 4 shite appraisals in a row. Wilson record is a signal of his ability as a manager. His rather worrying 2nd season syndrome is a signal he cannot sustain things. It is funny that most on here are quick to critise my (half baked) theory, yet they agree that we'll not do anywhere near as well as next year.

The shed thread was definately my Barnsley, if you compare me to Wilson. Best days are behind me. Maybe I should go and wind some of the numpties up on Blades Mad!? :)

We didn't actually lose the play off final, nor did we lose to Burton*. If you throw in the pre season games too (all undefeated) it must be quite a run. They all count. We're still shite mind. First loss is coming very soon.

* I understand we lost these games on penalties, but we were not actually beaten by being outscored. I think it is fair to include these.
 
Well if we didn't lose, that must mean that Huddersfield didn't win...so they should still be in the same division as us..... But they're not...lets sue the bastards.

The play off final is still a game, it doesn't count towards the league points but it is a league run game... Therefore surely it counts.

It's not a fecking friendly is it!

The play off final isn't a league match.

Hence why it went to extra time and penalties. Huddersfield didn't get three points for winning it either.

10.1.2 Promotion and Relegation between The Championship, League 1 and League 2

(a) At the end of each Season, the two Clubs finishing in the highest positions in League 1 and the three Clubs finishing in the highest positions in League 2 shall be promoted to the next higher Division for the following Season. In addition the four next highest Clubs in League 1 will take part in a Play-Off Competition and the four next highest Clubs in League 2 will take part in a Play-Off Competition. The respective winners of the two Play-Off Competitions shall play in the next highest Division in the following Season.

(b) At the end of each Season the three Clubs in The Championship finishing lowest and the four Clubs in League 1 finishing lowest shall be relegated to play in the next lower Division in the following Season.

(c) If there are less than 20 Clubs in The Championship, the number of Clubs to be promoted and relegated between The Championship and League 1, shall be determined by agreement between The Championship and League 1. If as a result the number of Clubs in either Division changes, Regulation 5.2 shall apply.

(d) The two Clubs finishing in the highest positions in League 1 and the winner of the League 1 Play-Off Competition shall no later than the 31st May in that Season pay to The League the sum of £21,333 by way of contribution towards the cost of The League making Parachute Payments available to the Clubs relegated from League 1 in any one Season in accordance with Article 75.

(e) For the avoidance of doubt the sums payable under Regulation 10.1.2(d) shall be considered to be sums due to The League for the purposes of Article 80.1.1.

If we went another 41 league matches unbeaten we would be officially recognised as having the longest unbeaten league run in English football history beating Arsenal's 49.

Play off matches don't count, see Huddersfield's run last year.

Ken Jnr just back to Leeds Univ this week (hopefully seeing Deano at the football trials tomorrow and getting some shirts signed for me) so I don't tend to go to games on me own - it's a father / son thing to share (god knows it's not for the success on the pitch) - so it will be the perils of Blades Player again :(

Last year on the way back we stopped off at a pub that had a festival on with about 40-50 different ciders.
Shame we were driving but we did manage to sample a couple - lovely stuff.

How the fuck can we! We lost the play off final, which is a league sanctioned game and part of their competition rules. That would be a record I really wouldn't want

That's kind of my point. They decided that they were unbeaten, except for the big defeat at wembley in "the league 1 play off final" the league 1 bit is a giveaway

We are on a 9 game league unbeaten run whether you choose to accept it or not.

But the fact remains that we lost a league play off final so it's 7 unbeaten in the league.
If we were on an unbeaten run it would have been 10 but then we would be in the Championship and I might have witnessed a goal in a show piece match for the first time in my life.
 
7 games, 9 games, who cares. Since Evans went down, our record in all games (not including penalty defeats) is W3 D10 L1. That's not very good. It's certainly not promotion form.

It's safe to say we don't agree very often on footballing matters. I am sure you'll turn round and say 'Olle, you were right' (and buy me an ale) at some point during the season. Be it after your 20 games or whatever your statistical thingy magic says, when Wilson leaves or gets sacked or when we inevitably finish (a lot) lower than last season.

Yeah matey, heading down on Sat-di (for mi sins!?). Missed it last year, as the in laws were visiting. Lookin forrard to the day art, but dreading the match. Nailed on 1-0 defeat. Maybe more. At best nowt a piece or 1-1.

It will be 15 degrees and sunny tomorrow, which is just about cider drinking weather. Either that or some pale ale :-)

Finally, a bit of sense coming back into the argument. Since Evans went down we have been very average. But that is my point. A very average team that is on the decline with a very average manager that is on the decline.
