I think it might be a slow to difficult start, we could easily lose more than we win out of the first ten or so games, however I then think we will start to see the squad coming together more, as other teams with smaller squads start to struggle with injuries and suspensions.

By Xmas I expect to see us within striking distance of the play offs, then in the New Year and Spring move into and cement our place in those play offs.

Then maybe we can finally break the play off jinx.

however we are going to have to keep our nerve and show some patience at the start of this season, those expecting us to trouble the top two are not going to be happy as I don't think we will be any where near automatic promotion.

I think the first few games there maybe a few disappointing results due to the new defence dropping points but I dont think once we're past 10 games we'll be out of the playoffs and post Christmas I doubt we'll be outside the top two.

Well I'm just hoping we secure automatic, the league is at its weakest in years and if we fail who knows what the consequence will be. So while I'm not fully confident I will still be expecting United to be top 2 end of the season, you got to believe that being a fan.

I'm slightly more optimistic but agree that we may well see a sluggish start. I do think we have enough quality to be top 6-10 from the get go, and hope that by Christmas time we will be in the automatic promotion race. I'd like to think that if that were the case, we would be in a position to make big impact loan signings to further improve and make the top two, should we need to.

I 'd just like to say anything other than promotion with the funds what should have been made available will not be acceptable, its all down to Cloughy now,we don't want any excuses, injuries, funding, etc etc, promotion is a must this season.

Have those funds been made available though?. The signings so far have been nothing to write home about except maybe Wallace who is already showing signs of being injury prone. I was really expecting some decent signings this Summer but they haven't materialised. Cloughy has been open and honest about most transfer targets but I'm beginning to wish that names would not be mentioned , then we won't suffer the disappointment. I am confident, but hope I'm wrong that next week we will kick off still, without the striker for whom we have been searching since the year dot, don't tell me they're not out their, the Dingles have signed Winall for one.

Agreed.

Expect another season in this league if all we can hope for is the play-offs.

Thats why i put should, instead of have been made available to answer your question. The problem is,Cloughy has said on a numerous of occasions he is happy with the budget made available to him,so either he has told porkies or he has to get us promotion.I find it strange that since the prince has gone back, our funds seem to have stopped to a certain degree. There is something telling me that all is not well and we have been told bullshit yet again.

Pardon my french but today was s.h.i.t.e. That said i'm not worried yet we have still got a good bit of quality in this team and I think once we find our starting XI and get them playing together week in week out things will knit. Basham and Alcock could be good signings for us both should play every week I think. Back four are still a bit wobbly and need to sort it out and we need that striker but I think there is enough in there now to challenge. As you have said though it is a marathon and there will be some scrappy games. Would be more than happy to stay in touching distance of the top at around xmas and then push on from there.

I'm pretty sure that funding - especially the HM money - is available but NC has had to be patient. He's not letting it burn a hole in his pocket and spending it just for the sake of it. Obviously, his 'big targets' have not (so far) materialised but it's there and will be used to keep the project on track.

Strangely, selling Harry could have strengthened us. He was wasted at this level and wanted away, but the £2/2.5/3m we've got can cetainly make an impact at this level.

Perhaps I'm a bit more optimistic than other Blades but I'd expect us to hit the ground running and be at the top from the first few games. I've been going to matches for nearly 50 years now so I'm not ignorant to previous and prolonged disappointment and failure, it's just that this feel good factor we've had since February is based on results and terrific performances. Nigel Clough seems instinctively tuned in to the expectation and ambition of the club much more than hapless Weir or Wilson.

Surely friendlies are nothing to get too down about they're warm up matches that's all.

I think that even as warm up matches you can still read something from them. If your forward warms up by taking 20 practice penalties and he blasts every single one wide you're entitled to worry about how they're going to play,

But on balance I still agree with you, there's been enough positives in patches throughout these friendlies that I'm still very positive about a bright start to the season :)

[QUOTE="wizadry, post: 631220, member: 13101"I find it strange that since the prince has gone back, our funds seem to have stopped to a certain degree.[/QUOTE]

What's your evidence for that?

One match does not make or break a season but I fancy how we do against Bristol City (in what should be a six pointer) will cast a strong shadow over how the first 10 games or so go. Lose 0-2 or so and it will be confidence sapping and slow the new team bonding which is important given the number of key personnel changes.

I know we won the first match under Weir and we know what happened after but confidence can be a fragile thing (like trust - easy to lose, hard to get). If we hit the ground running then we have a fair chance of the top 2 come season end - struggle in the first 10 then I think we are looking at the play-offs at best. The problem is I still can't see where the goals are going to come from though and kick-off is less than a week away.

So - at least a point needed against Bristol City and the rest will follow. UTB

I am not overly concerned, however I do have a few minor ones which could become big.

1. Since when has clough ever had a prolific striker? I know a decent striker makes his own chances with good movement, however we currently don't either set up a bagful or miss many. Would the way our team integrates have to change to bring in a 20 goal man?

2. A lot has been said about the quality of our squad been better. One of the main reasons behind our success in the 2n half of last season was we played the same 11 for most games. Are the 20 players we currently have a bit of the same quality when really we should have made the 1st eleven better. Too much chopping and changing early doors where I haven't got a Scooby what or starting cb or cm partnerships are going to be for sure. This pre seasons hot and cold performances certainly won't make life easy or Nigel next week

NC had very little to choose from last season - this season he could put out virtually 2 identical teams. The last time I saw this was under Bassett, and he as well as the supporters never really knew what the best 11 were due to us having lots of average players and few who stood out.

Perhaps we are going to see more teams picked to counteract the opposition (as at Gillingham away last season) and a certain degree of squad rotation with no one playing 46 games (except Howard) with most chipping in lets say 36 games each.

Wiz, I know you have the club's best intention's at heart, but your comment about Clough possibly being a liar, or the Prince withdrawing his commitment, just doesn't stand up to scrutiny mate.

One thing some of our supporter's share is a 'Woe is me' attitude. The easiest answer for this elite bunch of moaners is to point a finger and blame someone, anyone! It's as if what's been said from the beginning has been forgotten, or even more worrying, swept under the carpet because it doesn't fit with their version of how life should be. It was made abundantly clear from the beginning that the funds available to Clough would be increased the higher we went. Now I've no idea how much those funds are, and neither does anyone else apart than Clough, the Prince, and one or two other people I suspect. Yet a few up and down results during pre-season and finger's are pointed and the clouds descend.

To be honest, to suggest Clough is telling lies is pretty low in my book. I'd also suggest that the Prince, and those who facilitate his wishes, hasn't mislead anyone. When I read posts that say they were expecting this, that, or the other, it strikes me that they've convinced themselves that we'll spend relatively large amounts. Then, when this doesn't happen, they blame, even though it's themselves who've invented this scenario. They attribute these falsehoods to Clough, the Prince, and just about anyone who they feel is worthy of their irrational and confused thinking. So, some posters aren't impressed by the signings we've made? The answer's simple, either don't support the team or produce evidence to back up the claims that we've been lied to. If anyone can substantiate that we've been lied to I'll support you, but until then, base those accusations on facts, not some aberrant figment of an over-active imagination.

We seem to have one of the best managers we've had for years, possibly decades, yet the realities of managing this club seem to escape these doolally idiots. Yes, Clough will be judged in exactly the same way as any other manager. If he loses more than he wins I imagine he'll be sacked. He realises these realities as much as we do, but the one thing I do recall is that after Weir's departure there was a chorus of support for the next manager to be given time and not chop and change at the first sign of a problem. It's pre-season FFS, not a deciding game regarding promotion. Some of us need to cut Clough some slack, stop referring to him as a liar, and base any judgements that seem relevant on the facts, instead of fertile imaginations that suggest we've been lied to. I was getting quite confident.....then I went to Yark!

:D

Can't judge them on pre-season.

yes you can judge on pre season - we should not be losing comfortably to Burton and York away showing little effort and commitment ,especially with a squad of players fighting for 10 places in the team.

Agree about the lack of effort in any game, but 'shouldn't' lose? Dundee FC beat Man City recently, and as galling as that must have been for the Man City management, I doubt they'll have responded in any other way than to access the pros and cons and work hard to correct what were clearly attitude issues on the day. It happens, to the best, so little ol' SUFC will be treated to the very same by teams we imagine are there for the taking. Of course, in this scenario is that little glitch that doesn't consider that other teams want to beat us, and give us a lesson in how to perform. It happens, period. It shouldn't, but it does.

I find it very deflating to see my team lose, but I also know we're in good hands, therefore we've got little alternative than to let those who manage this team get on with it. Does anyone seriously think Clough takes any pleasure from watching his team lose?

So Harry really did have sun stroke then ???? No I don't think so either, so why does the club continue to put out these false statements not that it has never happened before mind you, remember the Beattie flu. Little wonder we get people saying seen it all before, same owd etc etc. We have had this for years at Sheffield Utd, so many false dawns, it will take longer than a few months for any new regime to change peoples perceptions. The only thing the sun stroke excuse achieved was to undo months of good work in rebuilding relationships with the fans.

Or it could have been that nothing had been finalised at that point? You're right, being economical with the truth is rarely beneficial, but I'm prepared to see beyond the immediate issues that surrounded Clough's statement. Maybe Clough was caught on the back foot by Harry's behaviour and made a poor choice, shall we lynch him? As for undoing month's of good work, not in my book, but then I try and see what might lie behind this rather than arrive at simplified conclusions. Clough's a good manger, but then maybe he should be sacked because he made a misjudgement, as if the rest of us haven't done exactly the same at some point. Lots of managers have made poor calls, Ferguson for example, even Nigel's dad will probably have shown fallibility, but I doubt there'll be many who'll damn him for an isolated incident.
