The way i see it is we have no money to spend need to get rid of 5 or 6 big earners and replace with any juniors that are ready ie Maguire and slew and then bring in the rest on a free. At the moment we have 1 gone on big money, evans will surely following then am not sure who else at this moment.

Exactly, and the point is, we can't just ship these players out quickly because it suits us. Like everyone else, they (and their agents) are going to shop around for the best deals and as always, one deal leads to another.

I still expect Monty, Ched and Squinny to be gone and that should free up enough cash to bring in the 5 or 6 players we need, how quickly is anyone's guess.

According to the star United expect a lot of transfer activity this week and want a good percentage sorted for Malta we shall see.

Fine, my point is, if it doesn't happen, we don't need all the doom and despondency.

I believe we were close to signing an attacking player last week but were outbid. My guess is Danny Green who went to Charlton but it shows that the wheels are turning behind the scenes.

I think we will lose out on a few unfortunately, i would of thought London was the attraction for Green. Understand your point but over the last few season i think a lot of blades see that we weren't ready and we all know that this season we need to be.

True but I think this summer is different, we know what we need to do and we have to do it. The last couple of seasons we just seem to have drifted along and whilst it may look like the same is happening, I just don't think it will. As I say, it might be the end of August before we have the squad in place but so be it.

There simply isnt enough happening as regards transfer activity. It was always going to be complicated due to the requirement for moving high earners on, which was always going to drag through the summer. Whilst a few clubs might be interested in those players, lets face it.....nobody was ever going to snatch the club's hands off for them. Its a case of waiting til we have cleared the decks, even though we were originally told otherwise. When DW arrived he clearly stated that we did not have to sell before we buy (probably the advice he was given), then following Henderson's move to Millwall he contradicted that entirely by saying his move has given us room to manouvre.

I'm not blaming Danny for that.....but it seems to me (once again) that we've been told one thing that meant another. Same old Blades. At most it meant we had room for one signing without having to flog anyone.....perhaps I took "we dont have to sell first" as an indication that we could actually do more than sign a defender from Swindon!

We are where we are and thats fair enough but it doesnt inspire. The players are back in training and we have a thread bare squad (sound familiar?). At this moment in time I can see no more than a mid table finish at best. We need a lot of ins and outs over the next two weeks to convince me any different.

This'll add fuel to the fire then;

I can understand the theory behind it but surely McCabe knows that the likes of Evans will go at some point and withholding transfer funds, if indeed that's what's happening, can only damage our chances. For the record, I still believe that this situation wouldn't stop us buying someone but once again, conflicting noises coming out of the club.

Agree Jim, all understandable from a financial point of view. But why tell us things to the contrary to begin with? When I read "we dont have to sell first" it really got my hopes up and I thought "great we can kick on straight away then!" Only to hear more disappointing sounds a few weeks down the line. Rubbish!

Same old same old SCB, McHero has obviously been away and just come back to let the blades know whats really happening

This is not about telling you ‘I told you so’, slamming the club or anything of the sort. Everyone agreed that this was going to be a difficult summer and that there needed to be a lot of transfer activity. The board, the manager and the fans were all United that we needed to decrease the wage bill and bring in fresh challenge. This was never going to be an easy job, but an early appointment seemed to set us on the right foot.

Since then it has been massively underwhelming. Very little in the way’s of ins and outs and a truly uninspiring summer. We now look like we are going to be in a position where we lose our bigger earners at the last minute and then have a depleted squad and have to rely on loans or we’ll have an unsustainable wage bill. Either one is far from ideal.

This thread was aimed at stimulating debate about what United needed to do over the summer and then following progress. Most posters agreed it would be ideal to have a squad in place by the time we went to Malta. However we are just as far from having a squad as when Wilson took over (5/6 weeks ago). There is still time, but the clock is ticking. All I have done is dated what has been happening. Unfortunately (through no fault of mine) there has been so little activity that I am getting accused of starting up a ‘Olle told you so thread’.

I think even wilson wants to have it in place to malta and we all know he won't.

1 week to Malta ..... yet 'no immediate singings' likely

How underwhelming. We are likely to go to Malta without any new faces.

Wilson obviously thinks he can do something with this team. But he must realise we have little skill, pace and flair. He has seen them train for a week or so now and must be asessing them. This is not to mention the wage bill still being massive and no sign of the big earners leaving.

Perhaps Wilson is planniong to make a judgement on attitude, commintment and ability when they are away in Malta. I worry this might be too late.

The question is, are you two getting your knickers in a twist just because things are moving slowly, or do you believe the manager / club aren't doing enough in which case it suits certain agendas ?

Jim Chim, I have an agenda which is that I don't believe Wilson is good enough to manage my football club if we intend to get promotion this year.

That said, preparation is key and I honestly expected that Wilson would've done more to get things moving. Firstly, get the players who are a financial burden out on a transfer list.

As it is we've got rid of 1 and brought 2 in (one which was agreed before the end of the season)

His back room staff has only just come together. A lot of work to do to turn this side from a so called lump it side to a well drilled footballing side.

A jolly I mean a tough summer training camp to Malta is great, but surely given the need to be getting players in and out we'd be better served being closer to home. This is especially important given that some people think that deals don't get done when players are on holiday I meant on a training camp.

I think there are other areas where I will/ am already able to highlight the issues and satisfy my agenda, but this isn't really one of them...

Lets hope that Wilson is a master in efficient training methods and the reason that he's been languishing in the lower leagues for so long is because he's been studying tibetan Monk's training techniques for a league 1 promotion push (parts 1-4)

3 days to Malta

.... and the rumours are flying about and we finally look set to see some transfer activity. Looks like Willo, Yeates, Quinn and Monty are all set to move. Question marks still hang over Evans also.

Let's hope that all the activity happens sharpish (i.e. next couple of days) so Wilson has room to maouvre in the transfer market.

Wilson is clearly trying to assess which youngsters are ready to step up (a good move in my opinion) and if we can bring in 4, 5 or 3ven 6 players before the start of the season, then perhaps this pre season might not be such a disappointing one.

I am not holding my breath, but are we about to see the 'flurry of activity' we have all been waiting for?

I'm getting a bit worried if i am honest olle, i can see a good 5 or 6 leaving with nothing coming in. If the rumours are correct and McCabe is really trying to sell now is he about to pump in more money ??? Doubt it that would mean him needing more in return, I now fear for us this season.

Nothing will happen ref Evans until after the 19th, that will then obviously release a fair amount of "give" from the wage bill.

You really can see 5 or 6 out and none in?

Really?

Yes got that feeling saturday with him playing so many Juniors.

He obviously didn't have a BBQ this weekend Bob, gossip a bit thin on the ground ;)

bit thin on the ground now that Jim:D ignoring all rumours about inbound players now because its sell, sell, sell time at BDTBL. Will cost less in Malta anyway if we only take a dozen.

DW said there'll be a more 'familiar' looking team tomorrow night. It will be interesting to see who lines up, or more revealing, who doesn't.

Yes very true but with only 3 first team players starting Saturday inc Maguire, and 2 replacing 1 at half time we had 4 on the pitch at once. So he will maybe start with 6 tomorrow?? Still a worry Jim because i think DW now knows he needs to use a lot of last seasons youth team.

As I see it, whilst it would have been ideal to get the full squad in for Malta, I think the Donny friendly on 27th is probably the time when we'll have an idea where we are. I've no doubt that this week will see some movement in and out and any new faces will either be flown out or remain in Sheffield building up fitness as has happened in previous seasons.

There is no way most of those from Saturday will be regular starters for the upcoming season.

In a way it puts some of the OTT posts about throwing them all in into context.

Player will be coming in, but I don't think any real money will be spent until after the 19th.

If this article is true i think it goes to show we are selling only at the moment

http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/foot...eal_but_qpr_and_cardiff_are_in_race_1_3565926

Interestingly we get attacks on the board if we accept offers lower than what the fans deem we should be accepting, but when the club sets an amount and sticks to it we get that we are only selling at the moment. The article you linked to comments that we are currently talking to two potential signings.

My money is on selling / getting rid of 3 or 4 players at least, all in the final week before the season starts. Wilson will say 'we haven't really got time to get anyone in now on a permanent deal before the start of the season, indications were that the player would stay and we have been let down'. blah blah blah blah blah........
