The squad that Wilder inherited

Surprised Ben whiteman never got a decent chance reckon he’d have done decent in league one & champ who knows what wilder could have made him

When you see names like McEverley, McGahey, Woolford, Hammond, Flynn, Done etc no wonder we were shit for so long.

Be interesting to see a ‘where are they now?’ Most of them should be stacking shelves in Morrisons.

Would love to know Wilder’s views on those players. Because he - more than any other manager in the past decade probably - has shown that the gap between Premier League quality and League One quality probably isn’t as great as everyone thinks. And for that reason, I could now imagine any player who looked terrible for us in our wilderness years going on to do alright for us under Wilder. Obviously there are some exceptions to this though...!

Yeah I guess you’re right. After the Adkins season, who’d have thought Basham, Freeman and Sharp (despite being our best player at the time) would go on to become Premier League players? Plus Coutts who became unplayable for about 18 months.

I can just imagine Hammond in the Norwood role now...

Can you imagine if about three and a half years ago someone said to you “fancy looking into the future and seeing one of your posts on s24 in a few years’ time?” and you ended up on this?! You’d be going absolutely wild.

You know Wilder's view on those players. The ones he thought were any good were retained - the rest, sold or had contracts paid up/ cancelled, etc.

One possible exception to that is Che Adams - who Wilder saw as having talent, but perhaps not the right attitude and coupled with the fact he was our most saleable asset, he chose to move him on in order to get funds to bring other players in.

Too simplistic for me. Why were they released? Attitude, talent, not a fit for the system? Could they have done well for someone else? I definitely don’t know Wilder’s view.

Combination of all those things in some cases - but ultimately because they were "collectively" a bunch of failures. Where did we finish? 11th in League 1? The famous "Lap of Shame" at the last home game v Scunthorpe. And a manager (ex-Scunthorpe) full of corporate speak and bullshit, who thrilled us with little catchphrases, like,

"Do you know which is the biggest room in your house?"

"Room for improvement!"

Well he created a side that had PLENTY of room for improvement. So he was right about that at least.

Wilder did exactly the right thing when he came in. He turned that bloody shambles of a squad over with a pitch-fork. Which is exactly what was needed.

We used to argue on here about players like Flynn and Done. Matty Done in particular used to have some very vocal supporters - some fans loved him because he ran around a lot. I thought he was poor myself. I don't think we're missing him - or any of the other stuff we jettisoned back then.

I get what you're saying but I think we've crossed wires a bit. I can work out that collectively the players were a bunch of failures and I can make a good educated guess as to why Wilder got rid of certain players. I'm saying he may have felt that some of those players could've been a lot better in a different system or with a different attitude, ie. he was right to get rid as they'd never succeed here, but might do somewhere else. Why some players succeed and others don't, or why some succeed in certain places and fail in others, is an interesting conversation. And unless you've had that conversation with Wilder, you saying "we know the answer" isn't helping me a) get the answer or b) have an interesting debate about it 😂

I get your point overall but I think its harsh to lump Done in with wasters like Hammond or Woolford. He made 31 appearances in the league one promotion season. Clearly a limited footballer but Wilder saw a role in the side for him.

Warrington, Scunny, Hyde, fuck him, St Mirren, Rochdale.

Completely forgot that Edgar played for us.

The peak of that season was when we didn't make any January signings and our official account tweeted 5 minutes after the JTW shut that the loan window opened the following week after Adkins had publically said our squad wasn't good enough.

Build Wilder's statue now.

That squad only lost to manure to a last Rooney penalty in the cup at Newton Heath. So a target for cwak.

Arguably in terms of the squad, it wasn't such a bad time for Wilder to inherit the squad as a number of those were at the end of their contracts and were released while Baptiste and Edgar were loans so simply returned to their parent clubs.

McEveley, Flynn, Baxter, Cuvelier and Woolford were all released. As we know, Hammond triggered a clause in his contract and United paid him off.
Reed and Whiteman were loaned and then subsequently sold and Wallace was initially loaned and then his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Of the ones that remained, the odd one was Brayford who Wilder seemed to initially favour but then was loaned and he joined Burton permanently at the end of his contract. Not sure if it was for footballing or financial reasons.

Although money was still tight, it gave Wilder the opportunity to bring in quite a number of players in his first season.

Never disliked Flynn, not a bad player and always gave it everything, my best memory was at villa in the cup when he scored in front of all the blade fans just after they had equalised, brilliant memories

I think Flynn is one of those players that didn't actually do bad for us and had some great moments, including the goals he scored against Villa and Charlton in the cup that season. I think he perhaps gets unfairly tarred by the fact he's become synonymous with what is regarded as one of the poorest periods in the club's history.

I liked him as a 'proper footballer' but sadly his 'everything' just wasn't good enough.

He huffed and puffed but was too lightweight out of possession and too slow with the ball. Nice lad and I wish him well but people have to accept he was part of the reason why we weren't good enough. Adkins deserves full weight shit, but he was working with a right crock too.

A team is a jigsaw, pieces may look the same but unless they fit properly it just don't work. and the big problem with the jigsaw is...…...………..

He seems to have done well enough at Donny that Hull offered 1 million for him last month.

Oh yeah i agree but look at what wilder did with coutts/basham would have been nice to do it with white-man aswell as hes proved he is probably good enough to at least get to the championship level
