Quick reaction to that game, let me know your thoughts Blades

I've seen a beautiful Gretsch FSR Electromatic in pearl white with gold hardwear for sale at a really good price and I'm toing and froing in my mind about whether I should go for it. I don't need it, the last thing I need is another guitar but I just really fancy it. I'd have to try and sneak it in past the missus. I'd get a bigger clip if she caught me trying to sneak another guitar into the house than I would if I was trying to sneak another woman in. I don't know.... should I? shouldn't I? If I don't pull the trigger now, someone else will. What do you think?

Slightly early so I’ll guess what it’s like

Pommpey; plays Captain Pugwash theme on his synth. Swears a bit.

Andrew “the Norwich fans said…

OK, cut to Deadbat “2 out of 10”

Er, Pommpey - plays Blue Peter theme in synth, makes references to faeces and vaginas.

Hal “fuck it, I’m done”.

What have you made of Tommy Doyle's season so far?
Blades fans give their opinion on the Man City loanee in this video:

Interesting but those subtitles are a nightmare. Impossible to read when they keep flashing on and off.

Just click on the button that says 'cc' and it removes subtitles on all videos
That’s fine for me but I was thinking more about people with impaired hearing. With most of the contributors you could potentially lip read but one guy was almost in silhouette.

Mixed bag for Doyle.

He looked superb on his full debut. I thought it was a 9/10 performance (Reading @ home?) and we'd picked up an absolute gem. He's not hit those heights since but has still been very good in bits and pieces.

He can definitely play. When we're on it and attacking, he looks great.
Out of possession though, I'm not sure he pulls his weight and we get overrun through the middle of the park when he plays next to Norwood. The Blackpool game with him and McAtee playing was embarrassing at times.

Maybe he belongs further up the field in place of Berge?
He could do with more goal contributions.

All in all, a good loan signing and he's got loads of potential. I'd be buzzing if he was an academy lad. Hopefully more to come.

He's a good young player who will improve.

Can be great on the ball and has impressive vision. Also takes a good set piece. He needs to work on his strength and stamina though. Looks shattered after 60 minutes. Also, not the best defensively and sometimes seems to be running on sand when tracking back.

Maybe Pep is thinking about him playing further forward do to those defensive issues?

He's been a bit in and out for me, needs to he more consistent. Having said this, he's been much better than the loan signing of McAtee, very underwhelmed by him.

Pommpey-free zone, sadly.

I feel unloved. Boo ... and indeed hoo :(

Good summary .

Yes , there’s much to admire about the lad but at present there are a few flaws in his game which hopefully he will eradicate as time goes on .

Among these are taking up some strange positions when not in possession , the occasional sloppy pass when under little or no pressure and the failure to react quickly and positively enough to recover from those and other situations .

Overall though probably the best of our loan signings which is a bit of a disappointment since , like many others , I had high hopes for Khadra and McAtee who have both been distinctly underwhelming so far .

IMHO I don't think United use him to the maximum of his abilities with Norwood in the team.

When in possession the midfield can be very good because it's like having two Norwoods to a degree both dictating play. If Norwood got injured I think we have comfort that he could do that job.

However, I'm not sure the team needs to have him playing a similar role to Norwood.

For me I would persist with 3-4-2-1 and he'd take the place of Berge. Pep alluded to the fact that he could play further forward and I'd agree with that.

I think his delivery from the right would create even more chances if he was afforded a role further forward. I believe he created more chances than anyone whilst at Cardiff so clearly being behind a striker will see more of that than being in central midfield. He's had plenty of sighters so finding himself closer in I think he would start to contribute to goals and assists more. When Berge returns you can reevaluate but that's a way off.

The question then is who to play alongside Norwood. The challenge being you have a few forward options such as Khadra and Brewster you can play in a front three by moving to a 3-4-1-2 rather than a 3-4-2-1 forward line and this probably causes some hesitation in moving Doyle up there as there is less experience to put in midfield.

So you'd ask who replaces Doyle in the two. For me it's a pity Coulibaly isn't back yet and I hope we get to see him. He's an athlete. Norwood patrolling laterally whilst paired with a box to box engine is what will get the most from Norwood and probably lengthen his career.

In his absence Fleck's waning powers are still an option but I do wonder whether this could be the point for Arblaster to emerge. He scores a few in the U18s and is lauded as having good vision. He gets up and down. He gets in the box. If they're good enough they're old enough.

To that ends, whilst Norwood and Doyle together excels more in possession then out, though Norwood is high on defensive stats, it would give the team more robustness if Doyle could drop back into midfield.

Great subject choice Hal. Being a loan player will always divide opinion. Interesting choices of his ideal position, might reflect differing demands of parent club and PH.
I think he is well on the way to proving himself as an asset, especially considering the non availability of other players.
He’s had to flex his game a bit depending on the role he is required for, and that can only be pleasing for Pep.

Like others said, probably on loan to a lower/mid prem team next season so if we wanna see him in a blades shirt again we need to go up.

Will only be a loan regardless tho not permanent.

To me, he's more suited to a four man midfield, looking at the patterns of play and situations he finds himself in. He's not technically a winger or some sort of wingback, more a youthful, prospective right side midfield general in the making. To get the best out of him we need a similar left sided companion who will take turns to drop behind as play advances in that area of the pitch. Where that leaves Norwood - who has no left foot or advancing capability - is the next debating point. It seems to me that Sheffield United cannot move on in any direction of playing development with Norwood in the side. To many he simply has to be picked and that creates a serious blocker when player like Doyle, who does a lot of unwritten heavy lifting when he's on, becomes available to use.

We simply haven't identified our central midfield as an area which needs optimising. We came up with Fleck-Norwood-Lundstram, having had options in Coutts (until injured) and bit part players like Evans. We bought Berge, who is really a square peg in a round hole in our 5-3-2 and fucked Lundstram off, and then the midfield simply went flaccid and vulnerable with no real consistency, pace or capability. There was, and still is, no 'drive'. It's all about possession, coughing it up and tracking back in urgency to defend. Fuck knows what the plan is with Couibally, and any notion of what the fuck McAtee is doing at the club remains a mystery. So the real upgrade - Doyle - now remains the case in question, especially now we are wilting like a Truss lettuce and looking unlikely PL contenders. There's no way without promotion we'll be able to afford him and so far, I'm not sure we've seen enough for his capture anyway especially if it is anything north of say £5m

Bump

In an unrelated matter, my wife bought me an Apollon season ticket for an early birthday present yesterday. So I'll still be able to watch live football out here and the games don't clash with United. Winner.

Don't know why but that curtain bothers me!

When you said you'd finally sorted your internet it looks like the compromise is filming from the local passport booth.

Images of YorkBlade walking out after half an hour, bashfully picking up 4 photos, head down, ignoring the massive queue! 😉

None of my stuff has arrived yet, it's still sat in a White & Company warehouse. Don't get me started.

When it does all arrive, that curtain will be replaced by...a better curtain.
