These really are getting more and more cryptic.

I would suggest the secret to a manager's future is to do as the chairman wants.

1. Cut the wage bill. Well, Blackwell has done that.
2. Be nearer the top than the bottom, to give fans (false) hope. Done that too.

So where is this going? I've listed two reasons why Blackwell has a future. the only way he won't at the moment is if he resigns, and there's more chance of plaiting fog.

VIEWSHOREHAM,
loosen up, get a life, talk to a dog, and for FUCK'S sake, realise the humour and meaning behind a New thread!

Show me a humourous thread then.:D

As far as loosening up, I've had half a case of Beck's and the best part of a bottle of Sambuca.
I've got the MP3 player on random, because we've no forum wireless, and I've just had Fade to Black by Metallica, When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge and The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen. I'm looser than fizzy gravy.

How fucking loose do you want?

Last 3 for me - Gentle Hour - Yo La Tengo
What - Judy Street
Bedsitter - Soft Cell.

Radio S2 0 Me 3

Only half a case of Beck's!
What the hell's wrong with the other half?

Bladeinthatcham, (Where the fuck is that . Who need's Alice!). 606 want's you NOW!

After last night's loosening up I can now report that following the application of lots of PG Tips, some buttery toast, a very satisfactory go on the porcelain horse and four paracetamol I now feel relatively fine. The sambuca bottle is empty though.....

I said that Blackwell has been doing what McCabe has asked him to do, and at the moment he's highly unlikely to get the sack for doing what he has been asked to do. If he was indeed "one of the shittiest managers in the championship" then surely after selling off players and suffering from injuries then we'd be down near the bottom, not just outside the playoff places?

He might not be the best manager in the division, but he's a long way away from being "one of the shittiest".

I'm with you on this one SV. Considering that we've 'sold our talent', and (I think I saw somewhere) given 18 players a debut this season, not put out the same side twice etc etc etc, I'd say that the fact we are a win outside the play-offs is remarkable.

One of the things I think doesn't help Blackie is that I don't feel we (the supporters) 'connect' with him in the same way that we could with Warnock, or like some supporters do with their managers. I felt comfortable that I understood when Warnock was bluffing and smokescreening, and he could be read like a book after a while.

Blackie isn't that. He does talk too much now and again, and that is a shame as his media skills aren't exactly 'silky'. Put those together and you get meat and drink for the 'uber-sceptics'. I just see a passionate and dedicated football man whose mouth and brain can sometimes appear to be unconnected.

Still, none of us really know what is going on behind the scenes with the finances but it must have been really difficult to keep the cart on the wheels when the road is that bumpy. I've checked the Valad Property situation, as we know Mr McCabe is firmly geared to them, and the good news is that they do seem to be recovering. Share prices were between $0.04 and $0.07 this time last year, now they are $0.12 and $0.15. They have just secured another $41m in a rights issue to institutional investors that underpins the business.

Mr McCabe does seem to have the gift of good timing. Maybe the big rush in getting cash in and cutting costs is that Mr McCabe has realised that once the General Election is over, the interest rates will start climbing again? Rushing to pay up your debts isn't a bad idea..?

Who knows?

What is amazing is that a thread that started so dismally has developed into a reasoned and sensible discussion. Admittedly there's only two posts that fit the bill, but that's better than nothing.

Good timing? Possibly.

He sold out at the height of the boom yes (which is clearly a very good thing to do) but by time his consideration was due for payment they'd virtually gone bust and I think he's walked away with a small fraction of what he sold for. Obviously better than nowt but I personally don't see why the hero-worship of him. Has he still got shares in Valad or did the cash payment last year get rid of him?

He's tied the club far too closely with the property market for my liking and you make a good point about paying as much capital off now while interest rates are low but the only place interest rates will be rising anytime soon is on the loans by McCabe to SUFC as he desperately tries to maintain his family wealth in this incredibly harsh recession. I think Blades Realty is a major, major headache for McCabe and therefore, unfortunately, for us.

he's useless ..... will that do?

I know the above is one of em ....... whats the other ?

From what I can see Valad agreed to pay £865m for his 60% share of Scamp Holdings, previously owned by Scarborough Holdings and which also involves a bunch of subsidiary companies. He kept hold of Scarborough and United Scarborough and the other bits of property. He also got a seat on the board in Valad for which he invested AS$100m (£60m or thereabouts). The problem was Valad ran out of cash before they could finish paying the balance. In Jan 2009, the final payment of £37m was converted to a debt for shares deal, so he ended up owning 19.9% of Valad for another £30m. The remaining £7m is to be paid to him in 2012 and is interest bearing.

Now Valad seem to be holding their own as a business and the shares have doubled in value over the last year, it may well end up being a very good deal for him, not in cash terms but in nett worth, not that he's short of a bob. I doubt that there is the pressure that we imagine, and if he's running the club at 'minimum cost' as it appears, there will be another reason...

The bulk of the £865m was Valad clearing the debts of the McCabe business. I think McCabe got £300m for his shares, consisting of a bit of cash and loads of Valad shares which were worth about 5 times more than are worth now. I honestly tyhink McCabe will be gutted about how little cash he has had out if Valad when you compare how euphoric he will have been about flogging it for £300m. All relative and I aint got a clue how these millionaire's think but he sold for £300m and he will end up seeing a hell of a lot less.

I really do believe that the collapse of Valad (and I still call it a collapse inspite of a recent little upturn when compard with previous highs when McCabe sold) has stopped any chance of McCabe investing money in United. Couple this with what I think is happening at Realty (ie major difficulties) and you have a bleak outlook in total contrast to your take on it.
