Firstly, the signings are welcome additions and they make the squad better overall and provide cover in case of injuries.

BUT...

The starting 11 is no better, if not almost certainly worse given that Henderson is better than Ramsdale and the rest of the players are the same as those we started with last year, only a year older.

Signing players as back up is fine, but I was expecting us to focus on our new signings being the ones going into the starting 11, with current players becoming the cover options.

I wouldn't rule out Hendo coming back here on loan if De Gea plays each game before the transfer window ends and Ramsdale doesn't settle quickly

Replacing our existing players with ones who are better will cost money we simply don’t have.
Maybe what we have brought in (and hopefully will bring in) will replace one or two of tonight’s starting eleven

It's funny, I've made most of these points this summer and been shot down a few times.

For what it's worth, I think the wingbacks will push Enda and Baldock and will be valuable additions, but we haven't upgraded elsewhere, at all.

The keeper situation was always going to be a huge risk, with huge shoes to fill, and I maintain my opinion that Ramsdale is unproven.

Then we have a midfield creativity that is sorely lacking and featuring a John Swift shaped hole, arguably.

Exactly you add quality other teams around us have we?

I will back you on that - we're probably going to get pelters but saying it now isn't a problem to me.

Reminds me of Pickford, when Sunderland got relegated.

Not at fault for the first but arguably was the second? Gary Neville seemed to think so.

i Know you have form for letting ex players go but believe me... that ain’t happening.

My issue wasn't signing Ramsdale himself my issue is with how much we spent on him. Like you say he's unproven and for me GK is a position where steady pair of hands (literally) would be best bet. There's plenty of experienced keepers out there who wouldn't cost anywhere near what Ramsdale did. That money would surely be put to better use at the top of the pitch.

Rightly or wrongly the ages of the new boys indicates they have been bought with the future in mind as much as the present.

Agree with the OP. creativity in the centre of the park is seriously lacking. We need a couple of player capable of creating chances out of nothing and that have a bit of flair.

Must admit to see virtually the same line up as last season deflated me but at the minute I’m just putting it down to 1st game syndrome like the 18/19 season where we still lack a couple of additions to the squad and improved form
