I think most decisions were correct for me, but I do have a feeling that refs get starstruck so that very similar instances are not treated similarly. If a 'top' player loses the ball, it can only be because he was fouled, but our 'low quality' players obviously lost the ball because of how good their 'top' quality players are.

Example from last night was the free kick Stevens gave away on the edge of the box. He flapped at the ball and in missing it gave the Man City player a slight palm off, meaning his own flap didn't matter - the Man City player didn't win the ball. OK, so give a free kick.

Then moments later, Baldock was tearing up the pitch, Man City defender flapped at the ball and gave the slightest of pull backs on Baldock ensuring he wasn't able to catch up with the ball and keep it in play. Free kick to Man City.

Trivial, but its no conspiracy. It is simply referees being starstruck. Similar things happened in both Liverpool games.

These are not the reason we lost these games, but it's very hard to play against. You can see the soul being sucked out of players, especially Stevens and Baldock towards the end of yesterday's game.

How does your theory explain why Liverpool have had so many decisions go for them this season, even when they've been light years clear at the top?

I don't mind accepting that some referees might have subconscious biases against certain players and teams (perhaps based on past experiences). However, do you honestly think that all of the stakeholders in 'the Premier League franchise' would sit down, have a meeting and agree that they have to tell every referee to give decisions for Man City and Leicester and give decisions against Liverpool? And nobody would say anything?

I think it's not just that, I think teams like Man City are also better at the little niggles. The touch on Stevens was perfect to slow him while also putting enough doubt in the ref to let it go. And on the other side they're better at winning free kicks (aside from Sharp, who is a master of the craft). They know when to run into people, when to leave a leg hanging for a trip.

I think we had this in League One. So many of the marginal decisions went in our favour in games because we were that bit faster, that bit smarter. The close fouls you'd see the replay and one of our lads would've got the little touch of the ball to get away with it. Other fans back then moaned about us getting all the decisions in our favour when really we were simply quicker and smarter than them.

Really, really well put. We needed every fine margin to go in our favour last night and while some things did (Henderson’s saves) little moments like the Baldock one really make a difference. In a “normal” game that’s not a big deal at all and we just shrug and move on, but we were never going to have many chances to attack so it’s a killer when one gets snuffed out for that and the officials turn a blind eye.
