To my mind Cloughie is usually tactically astute but he got it wrong last night.
The pitch was awful and trying to pass around the Lancashire brutes was always going to prove difficult, notwithstanding how abysmally we played. So why pick our 'pass and move' midget team and surrender a hugely significant strength and height advantage?
Preston simply bypassed the midfield and played off Davies, who dominated our back line thorughout. Defending set pieces was a disaster waiting to happen - we even had Baxter marking Davies at one free kick! I accept we are not blessed with many 6' plus players, but surely Higdon (was he injured?), Kennedy and Alcock should have started. We were generally out fought and out muscled.
Our lack of a domineering centre-half (remember those days?) was exposed again and Cloughie needs to think long and hard about this because Preston beat us pretty easily last night through Route One and pure physicality.
