The new slur.. “Brexit Football”

It’s only a slur in Greater London, the area where the vast majority voted to stay in the EU.

Almost everywhere else in the UK voted to leave the EU.
So “Brexit football” is arguably a complement and something to feel proud about.
Factually incorrect - but hey, thats where all "Brexit" threads go :(

Can't we just ask all our squad to become more continental by getting them to stick "ski" on the end of their surnames ?
(it may ruin a few of our songs though)

Must be hell of a fan if he is blocked by Liverpools twitter page.

Beautiful Brexit football!

Just shows you what amazing results a united Britain all pulling together could achieve!

Shame Tony Benn and Bob Crow are dead and that most of the Labour MPs are cosmopolitan idiots.

Stick Wilder in charge of leaving the EU and we'll be out by next Thursday with a victory parade on the Satday (with a decent sound system this time)

Fact is we've assembled our squad on a budget and we've done it without an international scouting team of any significance. We've recruited incredibly well from the pool we've had to choose from. Given that, of the team against Stoke on the final day, JOC, Basham, Fleck, Sharp, and Duffy, were all League One signings, is it any surprise we don't have a team full of fancy foreign names?

As for teams rolling us over in the Prem, it's an easy prediction. Since Wilder's run started everyone has told us that it won't last. Sheffield United won't keep up this form all season, Bolton and Scunthorpe are better sides. Sheffield United won't realise how much the Championship has improved, no way they'll survive without spending big. Sheffield United's first season was just momentum and now they're out of steam. Sheffield United don't have the quality to compete with Leeds, WBA, or Norwich. Sheffield United have bottled it by drawing to Millwall.

And now it's Sheffield United won't have a prayer in the Prem.

Whether it's next season we come down from the Prem failing to reach Derby's lowest points record, or whether it's in ten years time because we've failed to defend our Champions League trophy, eventually the "this won't last" prediction will be right, and there'll be some smug gits around to say "I told you so". So fucking what? Keep predicting failure and eventually you'll get one on the money.

Exactly right
Football is full of pricks making the same bullshit and obvious statements

I remember Martin O'Neill as Celtic manager saying that one day he won't be the Celtic manager

Every journalists question after that was "When are you leaving Martin" and every headline was "O'Neills future uncertain"

Martin O'Neill used to answer by saying a broken clock is right twice a day, and one day you will be right also

We have an English manager and an all British/Irish side. I've seen this called everything from "Brexit football" to outright racist.

When did this become a bad thing? Surely we need to promote homegrown talent, and this side's doing that in spades!

Will that work the other way around though? Pig fans have been predicting success for years & are still miles away from that becoming true!
;)

Joking aside, sure. They had their season pipping us to promotion from League One and then they had a few years of smugness. And now that the tables have turned it's all because we've overachieved and the division that was too tough for us to handle is now somehow piss weak. People like that live for the occasions in which they're right as though it affirms that they knew best all along. They didn't. They're idiots.

Can't we leave the politics for General Chat?

Another example of talking in riddles, no wonder people seem confused.
The vast majority of the voters voted to leave the EU, that can’t be denied.

Think this Brexit team tag may end next season because surely Wilder will bring in a non British or non Irish player.
Has he ever signed or managed a foreign player during his managerial career before?

"Vast majority"

1.89% of voters

a couple of million ;)

thing is.. we don't buy foreign players because we can't afford the scouting network and luckily our management won't buy crappy European players based on a youtube video and agent recommendation.. which has to be sensible.. we usually buy the players we played 'against' who impressed us

14 years as a Liverpool fan coming to an end.I didn't witness anything they win in my life and they not gonna win anything as well. Proud to join a new member as a cityzen family. In my first year I going to celebrate the quadruple with them . Bleeding blue.

christ.

Sorry but this is as offensive as monkey chanting imo. How can they justify ridiculing a club on the ethnic origins of their players.

maybe but you got to remember that this lot or fifa generation & premier league clubs are guilty of this too. where they think just because they come from a foreign club they are better than English people as how many times have people said if a foreign manager had the exact same achievements as sean dyche or eddie howe they would be linked with every top club job going but because they are english they are overlooked

harry kane career is this. levy wanted to buy a foreign striker, Sherwood said but kane from academy is just as good & free. Levy needed alot of persuading. Marcus Rashford, Jaden Sancho & numerous players that couldnt get a game at their home club. are relevations in germany

Chris Wilder, providing doubters of the Blades wrong since 2016.

We'll hit the PL, take one or two of the big to task, we'll take a few hidings, but i believe we'll be ok next season and prove quite a few experts wrong.

Great summary Carlton......if/when we take a serious beating I can't wait to hear the call for Wilder's head. It will be the mother of all meltdowns and cite various reasons why CW's had his day. We do have a vociferous minority who claim to understand the highs and lows that come with being a professional football manager. It happened at the front end of this season, a few posters who should know better got their tuppence worth of bollocks out in public view, but happily they now look extremely foolish and immature when it comes to appreciating the dynamics of football management.

We'll be fine, and although it might be a close thing, I have a strong feeling that we'll be part of the Premiership for another season and prove the doubters wrong.

I'm so looking forward to seeing how we develop and progress, good times ahead I hope, and why not considering who our manager is?

Apparently that’s what we play,

It seems to be accepted already by the Premier League fans that because we don’t have any foreign players and have an English manager that we must play hoof ball and only have effort and passion.

Destined for less points than Huddersfield....

All sounds very familiar doesn’t it?

Brexit Football!!! Let's call this out for what it is, which is an attack (admittedly by a young fool) on white men, which is incidentally, the only group in society that you can now insult with impunity (especially white working class men). Similarly I knew a gooners fan in the Warnock days who noted that our squad 'wasn't very diverse', as if that in itself was a deficiency & that the team would have been enriched somehow by a few more players of colour. What the tweet actually suggests is that 'these players are all British & that is therefore inherently bad.' The message is rammed home by linking that observation with Brexit. Pathetic really....& yes, I know i'm over analysing, but this sort of thing really gets my goat.

I'm a secondary school teacher & this sort of view is now becoming the mainstream amongst young people. They are getting increasingly bogged down in post modern identity politics & fail to see the elephant in the room which is social class. The flip side of this is the perception that anything that promotes diversity is inherently good, & normally the debate ends there.

Personally i'm looking forward to what this squad (with additions) can achieve in the Prem. No doubt it's going to be very tough, but they'll surprise a few along the way.

Bet he's never been to a football match in his life.

Seen plenty on Bein, Al Jazeera, BBC Worldwide...
there's an epidemic of football ''supporters'' across Africa/Asia who tend to follow the clubs who are successful.
Best thing to do is accept that and let them enjoy the success, it's not reality, it's a dream like state they live in.

Not going to push this because it belongs on the General Chat section - but in the real world the fact that 48.2% of people voted against Brexit absolutely means that "the vast majority of voters voting to leave the EU" can be denied. The result was marginal - hence all the grief.

But facts, Brexit and the Internet are mutually exclusive eh?

I don't know if he'll sign an overseas player, but I choose to believe he'll sign the players he believes best meet our needs - no matter what nationality they are.
