Stand up Jose Baxter!

Don't get me wrong I am as critical about Jose as anyone else and I feel like I have every reason to be because his inconsistency is nothing short of frustrating. The think that frustrates me most about him though his when he puts in these shifts every now and again in which he looks a decent player.

He comes on today and his contribution as well as Sammon's transformed the game and turned it on it's head. We saw a game from Baxter though that we would be more than happy to see every game. His work rate was spot on as he got back to sit in front of the back four and mop stuff up but he also looked to get the ball forward. He played an absolute blinding ball to tee up Billy for the second and then at the death he clears it off the line for us to save a point.

What is it about this lad? He has so much potential but he can't replicate his good performances on a weekly basis. Is it fitness? Does he need to come into a game a bit later when the tempo has dropped? What is it?

Who knows what machinations go on behind the scenes? My guess is that NA said to Jose to 'go out there and prove yourself. Make me want to pick you more regularly.' Whatever it was, Jose looked fired up and his pass to Sharp was fantastic.

I assumed a thinner fitter Baxter would mean a more consistent Baxter but it does appear to be that way.

We just don't know if the real Baxter is going to show up from one game to the next. It all comes down to his attitude as we know he has skills in his locker when he can be bothered.

For me it is has to be JCR he gets forward beats his man has a chance to get the ball in the box so he pulls back and tries beating his man again and looses the ball i like him but i just wish he would do the basics sometimes.

I don't mind JCR but there is a reason he is a journeyman and that's why. He is in his thirties and he still doesn't know if he should be crossing the ball or not. I'm sure he confessed that even he doesn't know what he is going to do next. So how as a striker are you able to time your run if the guy on the wing keeps pissing around trying to beat his man a dozen times.

I think he is much better coming on from the bench. Starting matches regularly he is just too inconsistent and unpredictable.

JCR is less predictable than Flynn. You can never be sure whether he might turn a game. With Flynn, you can be sure he won't.

Baxter gets his shit together and starts to perform, starts to look class; we can then sell him in Jan?

Harsh.

I can't help thinking back to the last fifteen minutes of the home game against Spurs last season.

Flynn set up the first goal with a run from his own half followed by a superb angled ball across the face of goal which caused the Spurs defence all sorts of problems and which Adams converted at the far post.

He played a big part in the second goal, picking up Murphy's movement up front and putting him through with a fine pass which led to the cross from which Adams scored again.

In addition, a dribble by Flynn on the right ended with him finding Scougall in a scoring position but the shot was saved and a fine threaded pass to Reed found him in space well inside the box but he blasted just over.

Everybody sees things differently but Flynn played a big part in turning that game on its head. I've never seen that from Campbell-Ryce.

Ah, well, I'll give Flynn credit for one thing - he is a Cup game player for some reason. He's had a number of good performances in Cup matches - most notably Villa and Charlton 2 seasons ago.

Even last year, when he managed one league goal, he managed to score twice in an FA Cup tie.

But league games? Forget it. 1 really good game in 10 is his limit. He never got in the team full time because his performances merited it - he got in because better players were sold/released at the end of 2012.

There's a number of players like that at the club. They're "safe". They are okay, but they aren't going to be key cogs in a promotion side. We have too many players like that.

This is his fifth season with us and he hasn't been sold. That above anything else tells you how good he is.

I have to agree - as nice a guy as he appears to be, I would say his tenure at Bramall Lane epitomises Sheffield United 2011- present day. Ok, steady - but just not quite good enough consistently.

Play Baxter as part of a midfield three and he'll be able to influence games, assuming the other two do the donkey work. But in a two he can't do it, as evidenced on Tuesday for example. The question is can you change a formation to suit him, is he good enough? I'd say no, but if like yesterday you need a change up then he's ideal from the bench.

He saved the point on Sunday, still think he has the potential to be much, much better and I think when we get to a full strength team he will be more relaxed and look like the quality player most thought he was going to be.

I'd rather see Flynn than JCR in the side. He actually gets the ball in the box, especially in a 4-4-2 thats vital.
If its a 4-3-3 I'm not too bothered about either of them playing, Che - Sharp - Sammon for me.

Baxter on the other hand has to start whenever fit. He's an idiot sometimes and can't cope in a 2 but with the extra protection of Basham AND Reed he can dictate any game at this level. The only player in our team who could play that ball for the second yesterday. Fact.

JCR is frustrating me the most at the minute. You are lucky if you get one decent ball in the box per game, and time and time again he leaves his full back hopelessly exposed.

He is a good, solid pro who will always put a shift in and never hide, but he is clearly not good enough for what we require
