It always annoys me when Blades fans forget Dave Powell when naming the best X1 from 1969 to 1975. Flynn played only 9 league games in the 1970-71, 23 in 1971-72 and 18 in 1974-75 seasons

Correct Dave Powell was fantastic until badly fouled by Rodney marsh at QPR which finished his career. Coincidentally the same twat ended Tom McAllister's career 2 years later.

I wasnt at the QPR game when Powell got the injury but I remember reading the match report in the Sheffield Archives in the Central Library around 2002 that he hurt himself tacking someone (not sure if it was Marsh), then tried to get up quickly but soon after collapsed onto the ground before being carried off. Am sure he would have been a star in the 1971-72 season had it not been for the injury.

I've always been of the opinion that teams from years ago would get trounced by modern day teams.

For example if the current Liverpool team played the Brazil 1970 team I honestly think it would go into double figures.

That 1970 team was as if the Gods had come to earth to play football. To put it into context and mystique, you never saw Brazilian footballers other than World Cups every four years and their brand of football was out of this "world" for the time. I agree with your point that modern day techniques and training methods would be too much for teams of yesteryear, but they played with such flair and seemingly tactical freedom the end product was mesmeric. It was their third World Cup win in 12 years.

For somebody too young to have been around in 75 why is Furphy never mentioned when discussing Blades best ever managers? Was it still considered to be Harris’s team even with him upstairs?

Despite the 75 finish, which I sadly missed as I was working in Abu Dhabi when it was just sand, Furphy wasn't up to Gentleman John's standard AND Furphy wasted what funds he had on Chris Guthrie!

I thought Furphy wanted to sign Franny Lee for £50k and it was Dick Wragg (chairman at the time) who pushed for United to spend £90k on big Chris Guthrie instead?

I wasnt at the QPR game when Powell got the injury but I remember reading the match report in the Sheffield Archives in the Central Library around 2002 that he hurt himself tacking someone (not sure if it was Marsh), then tried to get up quickly but soon after collapsed onto the ground before being carried off. Am sure he would have been a star in the 1971-72 season had it not been for the injury.

I think the incident you refer to is the one he incurred after his comeback from the original one , and that as I recall was not caused by Rodney Marsh , utter cunt though he was .

My recollection is that his original injury was caused by a brutish centre forward at Crystal Palace called Gerry Queen .

I could be wrong and my memory could be playing tricks with me (not for the first time ) , but I have a clear image in my mind of the bastard taking him out , studs up above the knee .

Whatever the circumstances , the loss of David Powell was a cause of great sadness to me and many other Blades supporters of that era , who were full of admiration for the skillful and intelligent way he played the game .

You're right there Silent. Powell would absolutely have been a star in that team. I suspect I would have been at that game, but honestly can't recollect it.

The QPR game was when we were losing 2-0 at Loftus Road in March 1971. Woody and Hemsley (pen) scored in the last 2 minutes to make it 2-2

Gerry Queen didnt join Palace until after they got promotion to the 1st division in 1969 so he cannot have played against Powell (unless they did face each other when Orient played Cardiff between 1972 and 1974). Looking at Powell's games since he joined us in Sept 1968, he missed 6 games in our last 33 games of the 1968-69 season (he won our player of the season). He played in 31 league matches during the 1969-70 season. He got subbed in our 1-0 home win against Leicester in December 1969, played in only 2 of our next 11 league matches. In the 1970-71 season up to the QPR match he played in every game apart from the Leicester match in Boxing Day (31 league and 3 cup). Maybe the original injury happened in the home game against Leicester in December 1969?

I also note that we paid decent money for him - £28,500 to Wrexham. Another key, John Harris, 1968 signing in building the team of the 70s.

I can't find any Youtube video of him. Maybe he deserves his own forum thread?

Well I sing his praises at any opportunity I get, he left a big impression on me, especially as I was only around 12 when I first saw him & most of my attention was on TC. He was classy in everything he did, great in the air, a fair turn of pace & was as tenacious as they come.

Though not the biggest, Dave Powell was a classy defender, comfortably better than John Flynn as I remember.
I’ll probably get pelters for this but...
while Trevor Hockey had a great beard and was a real character, he wasn’t actually that good at the old football...Keith Eddy, with his strange gallop, was a big improvement.
