Great performance from the lads this evening. Boyes was solid, Marsh took his goal really well. Hampson was excellent - lively all game, made some lovely crosses & passes (including the assist for Brewster's goal) and well deserved the standing ovation he got when subbed. But MOTM for me was Peck, who didn't put a foot wrong all game. Neat passes, lovely control, he looked calm and assured beyond his years. The future's looking bright, UTB!

Just said this in one of the Peck threads, but it was the confidence and composure that impressed me. Not a rushed pass or touch. Happy to receive the ball and pass their way up the pitch. You see a lot of youth come through and they lack that calmness, or they've obviously been told not to take risks and just lay it off to a senior player. These lads looked very comfortable playing good football.

Apart from the outstanding Peck I thought the rest struggled.

Hampson is clearly a better player centrally as lacks the defensive awareness to play out wide and he didn’t keep the ball particularly well. Got better in the second half.

Marsh was virtually anonymous apart from the goal, but showed glimpses of finding his stride prior to being subbed. Needs to get more involved and find some strength. Definitely needs an L2 loan.

Boyes was our weakest defender in possession and not penetrative going forward, unlike Seriki.

And speaking of Seriki, a real shame he had to go off after a promising, lively opening.

One needs a loan. Control and hold up play needs to be better.

But but but, they haven't had a League One loan? But but but....

I listened to a bunch of podcasts last week where the 'experts' were telling us they were unproven, potentially shit and need a League One loan. If we end up playing them for more than 5 games this season we'll be getting relegated.

You know who you are....

WTF? 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️. What game were you watching?
Give some credit where it’s due. All did a brilliant job.
Stop being so anti Sheffield United.

The game you weren’t?

Excellent result, LOADS of positives and minutes for the kids, granted. Outside of Peck I don’t think any are ready for the first team squad just yet, that’s all. Keep your knickers on.

Mate.... Last week I succumbed to the temptation having not listened to any for the Summer... Honestly, in the two i listened to, i heard more bad takes than i thought possible from grown men. I genuinely thought at one point it was some sort of parody I was listening to.

Absolutely no insight whatsoever, and no one looked at the evidence that was staring them in the face. Much easier to roll out the same tired narrative about the owner, Wilder and unless our kids have played 1000 games on loan, then they're shite...

Anyone with half an eye, who's paying attention can see Brooks is going to have a great season, Peck is a baller and Marsh is a real talent...

I might be getting carried away here but in the last couple of seasons we've had Doyle and mcatee on loan from city, who've got a great academy, and I know it's early days but with arblaster and Brooks we have our own players that are not far from being their match, throw in peck and seriki and others coming through the recruitment team and the academy staff need a pay rise because they're saving this club a fortune

It helps as the kids in U21s age group don't count in the EFL 25 players squad size. So they're allowed as extras to the Senior 25.

Peck was excellent and Seriki looked a real threat until he went off. The rest didn't look out of their depth either (albeit against mainly L1 reserves). Really excited about the crop coming through.

Ah so you managed to listen to Roygbiv on Bladespod then?

Grown man is stretching it a bit, mind.

Why would you expect any insight at all from a podcast run by fans? If I want to hear loads of uninformed opinion I can just read it on here.

I hope they prove me wrong obviously but I still think most need a loan. Peck and Seiki looked the only ones I'd trust in a Championship game based on yesterday.
You're not wrong, I'd even be hesitant to throw Seriki in for anything more than the odd game - especially against better opposition.

Peck may well be ready but I get the opinion that it may be better for him to play week in week out somewhere for a few months.

It's a fair point!

Like I've said in another thread, every Blades fan i know was feeling a sense of excitement before the season started based on Wilder and the players he's brought in.

Yet listening to various podcasts you'd think the sky was falling in. A few times I heard relegation to League One was a possibility....

I know negativity sells, but Jees, step out of the echo chamber...

Yeah I agree. We beat a second string Wrexham yesterday and whilst It was great seeing so many youngsters part of a winning side, only Peck looked like he could comfortably step in to a promotion chasing side

I'll always give an honest opinion. We don't make money from Bladespod so it's not about selling anything. I just think 2 weeks ago things were looking really bleak and most on here would have agreed. We had no back up what so ever and there is still no proof the kids could hack it in this league.

It's just an opinion though. I obviously hope you're right but looking at the evidence I had a few weeks ago, I couldn't honestly say I was expecting a successful season.

What about Brooks? Do you have an opinion on him?

Over the last few years, players needing League One loans has been such a common shout that it has become received wisdom. I posted on here before that if McAtee had been one of our own players, we would have been shouting for him to be loaned out rather than playing him.

I’m not sure it’s the cure-all it’s made out to be. Seriki looked brilliant last night and pre-season but by all accounts his loan at Rotherham was pretty dire. I would rather players like Peck be waiting in the wings here if needed rather than being kicked to pieces playing for someone else.
But then again, I know nothing about football so I am more than likely very wrong!

I still think it's the best option to get them game time. It worked wonders with Arblaster last season and before them RND, Slater and Whiteman all had a few seasons on loan before becoming Championship standard players. I can only think of David Brooks in recent seasons who came straight into our first team straight from the academy. Even Jebbo and Osula went on loan and were only recalled due to our injury crisis. Obviously Andre Brooks came in last season and it will be interesting to see if last season hindered his progress or helped him.

You've got an opinion about young players which is fine, but the reality is that most football clubs and their staff disagree with you. They're the ones that actually know what they're doing.

Keep voicing your opinion by all means, but to make out that everyone that doesn't agree is moronic is a bit silly.

If Wilder had the opportunity and squad they'd all be out on loan right now. We sent Jebbison and Osula out who were outstanding at youth level. It's the natural progression for any young player you think has potential

As I said, definitely could be wrong! It does feel like a trend to me, was it always this prevalent? Did Jags, Monty, Tonge go out on loans? Genuine question, I can’t remember.

For me, I get excited about the prospects, then deflated when instead of them being on the verge of the first team, they are farmed out. Curtis is a great example; the fanfare of us beating the great and the good for this fantastic player, only for us to be told he is miles off it and he needs to go elsewhere, leaves you feeling a bit “meh”.
