The Gary Cahill Loan

We had a better team in the Robson season than we did the previous apart from jags

Best CH at Bramall Lane in a very long time. Stood out a mile from the start. Was it really Curtis Davis keeping him out of the Villa side, or am I making stuff up ?

Because Bryan Robson, despite being completely unable to get them to play as a team, signed players that would have made a decent mid-range Premier League side.

Robson made good signings just a shame he is a totally crap manager.

Morgs didn't fit in with his philosophy I thought – wanted a more cultured Kilgallon/Cahill partnership.

Was Martin O'Neil manager at Villa at that time? How they've survived in the Prem so long is a miracle in itself. Down this year though. They seem to have the same philosophy at board level as us.
Just look at Mark Albrighton now. Always a class player and underused.

Cahill was decent but he made a few mistakes, he was fairly raw and I think he learnt a lot.

Morgs taught him a lot more, the harder, less glamorous side of the game and knowing when to get rid.

Not sure he really had England potential when he was with us but he was a very good player, during a shite season

They barely played after a disastrous spell together where we couldn't keep a clean sheet. Whatever the reasons it didn't work, and Morgs was dropped till Cahill was recalled.

I think to anyone else but us and possibly Bradford fans, Brian Robson is seen as a fantastic player, he captained England and Manchester United I think that held alot of weight plus the money available. No way in hell would Beattie or Gary Naysmith have signed for us if Robson wasn't her, I think Beattie they were starstruck that Robbo had even talked to them as they would've grown up in an era when he captained England etc. Oh well funny we tried signing Cahill after his loan, pie in the sky if ever there was an example.

Only seems five minutes ago that we could attract players of his calibre, though granted we were higher up the football ladder.

If memory serves, I recall Kilgallon and Cahill were the best central defenders we've had in a long time. At the time Cahill was valued at about £4-5 million I think (but could be wrong), but no matter how impressive Cahill was for us you could tell that paying that amount was something we wouldn't consider. So Cahill ended up at Bolton and played consistently well for them, until Chelsea came calling and the rest takes care of itself.

When William Henry opened this thread at 6.19pm he could sense the Burton result and came up with this one to deflect our attention.
