That's also true but on Saturday in particular it seemed like he wanted a free kick style run up to every shot after stopping the ball dead. He had a few blocked as a result

Evans in League One was up there with Deane in terms of what he was delivering. Billy isn't.

There is an argument that Evans 2012 season was better than anything Sharp has done.

Sharp has a better recording the Championship and it's not even close.

Plus Evans is finished. Sharp, 3 years older, has 100 more goals and is still going.

Evans had one good season in his entire career. Sharp has had several.

And Deane scored 22 in our league one season. Both Sharp (and Evans) have bettered that.
 
Just for info worth looking at minutes per goal, I am not sure If the others have taken pens (this would take Billy to 14 in open play) and you could argue about the quality of the midfield supplying them at each respective club all day long however Billy has done ok and no more this season for me. With his experience, transfer fee and wages should we have expected more, could we have got more for our money and a younger version? Just below this is Leon Clarke on 15 goals and a goal every 175 mins btw. I am playing devils advocate in a way because as I've said before I do like Billy.

That's extremely difficult to prove. Evans wasn't missing chances like Sharp did against Southend. In the last 10 matches he was on a goal a game if not more.

On the Deane goals I always understood both he and Agana got 30 apiece in all competitions.

They did. Deane got 22 in the league. Sharp has done better: 30 in 45 games in 2007.

Oh, and:

Evans in the Championship: 23 goals in 95 games (1 in 4)
Sharp in the Championship: 78 goals in 241 games (1 in 3)

You can be critical as well as appreciative. Sharps job is to score goals as much as a defenders job is to stop them. The miss against Southend probably cost us the game. That is where many fall down it is so easy to criticise a defender or keeper but stikers get away with loads of stuff they should be criticised for.
That said have you ever seen a striker put in to the box more quality balls than Billy? If only he was on the end of some of his own!

We were unbeaten in 9 on the day Evans got sent down. We were in fantastic form and Evans was reaping the rewards. Billy Sharp hasn't played in a team remotely near that sort of form. Ched Evans didn't single handedly win those games for us despite scoring the goals.

We can never prove that Sharp would've scored 30+ but he's managed 18 in a very inconsistent team. That team that Evans played in won 27 league games. Sharp deserves all the player of the year awards because without him this season we would be in a relegation fight.

Evans also had Williamson, Quinn, McDonald and Lowton Cresswell & Porter chipping in with ~45 goals between.

We're not comparing Apples with Apples. We're comparing a mediocre League 1 team against a team capabale of a mid-table Championship finish.

You have included Sharp at his peak. Evans had got through his formative years and started to blossom.

As much as Matt is convinced Sharp would have got 30 in a similar team, I'm also convinced Evans would have gone on to outperform Sharp once back in the Championship and let's not forget Evans' fear is all the more remarkable given he missed the last 5 games (could have been six) as well as the first 6 weeks of the season. Evans showed a wider repertoire, scoring a good few from free kicks and distance, something Billy has done less of.

Deane did of course have a high percentage scoring rate in the cups. Notching 24 in 42 cup games. Certainly his record of 108 in 241 and continued to perform at a much higher level than both.

I'd rank them (though others may differ):
1. Deane
2. Evans
3. Sharp

All three had been good assets for the club so I'm not spoiling for an argument. I'd have happily had Billy as captain this year.

Deane is better than both of them, no question about that.

If you rank them on their whole careers, you have to rank Sharp over Evans. You can't rate someone on what they might have done.

If you rank them solely on their United careers: each has one good League One year and two poor Championship years. I think Evans might well be ahead - until next season I suspect.
 
Shockingly, Brian Deane is STILL the last player who scored 50 league goals for us.

A truly appalling stat that goes a long way to explaining why we've only been promoted once in the past 25 years.

And if memory serves only Evans has managed even 40 in that time period.

Anyone who hits 20 is gone within 12 months maximum.

That's very fair summation.

The further comment about selling is also very pertinent. The last 'succesful' manager we had was Warnock. We weren't big sellers during that era to be fair. We made a call on Brown's contract and sold Bent to improve elsewhere but otherwise we did keep what we had relatively well. Surely not a coincidence.

Selling Blackman was a huge mistake, especially given what had just happened to Miller and Diego, who was emerging nicely at the time.

If ever your life depended on a penalty being scored, Blackman was right up there.
 
Good goal by Billy, could have had a hat trick today. Get a good winger next season and he will get 30!

Sharp has, to an extent, dug himself a rather large hole.

I doubt he would "want" to go.

But money talks.

The soundbites coming from the club are such that the players that will be at the club next season will be no better than the ones we have had this year, giving little reason to expect any significant improvement.

If this is so, and loyalty aside, would you blame him for considering a move ??
