The Curious Case of Billy Sharp

Folk were at it again today slagging Sharp off. It's his job to score goals - I don't give a flying fuck if he walks round the pitch scratching his bollocks for 90 minutes as long as he puts the ball in the net. 4 goals now is it?

Suppose some will still want him dropped next week.

Were you there today Lesmondo?

Unfortunately not, having a sedentary day before the Half Marathon tomorrow. I listened to another great goalscorer King Keith, who was another who used to get slagged off for 'not working hard enough' :-/

Did you go?

I was there pal. Great day out and 1st visit to Wombledon for me.
Good luck wi' t' running stuff :D

Exactly

Moving Brayford on and putting Clarke, Hussey and Fleck on the bench have all been very big calls by Wilder.

He has called every single one of them correctly.

UTB
Hussey on the bench wasn't a big call, hauling him off after his first half "performance" against Oxford then dropping him was probably the easiest decision any manager would ever have to make. Clarke and Fleck were both a bit injured when they dropped to the bench. Not forcing them back into the side was the right decision though.

In a way I feel sorry for Clarke. I think people just assume him and billy cant play together now - But we aren't playing the same way as before (aimless long balls) which suited neither of them.

I cant imagine wilder wanted 70 yard punts but maybe Clarke being up there made the players choose the easy option
It's still early days for them I know but it's just an opinion that I don't think the two of them will create a good partnership and i think CW agrees.

I personally think people are trying to manufacture a place in the team for Clarke when we are already getting results with him on the bench, I have to ask why?

In fairness he didn't look bad in the first couple of games he played. And his record in this league is really good, I think people just want to see them both in the side and doing well.

atm I see him more as an option to change things up off the bench - While done and sharp is currently working. Personally i'm looking forward to seeing what lavery can do - he's scored wherever he's been and we are missing some pace I feel.

I too am looking forward to seeing Lavery but I'm struggling to see what system we'll play and who will drop out. Done does too much for the team for him to drop out in my opinion.

And that tells it's own story of the quality of supply. Billy does tend to dig opportunities out for himself. I don't doubt that if we had a midfield four (or five, if you like) that found him more regularly, he'd be well into the twenties by now. The goal against Walsall was a perfect example of what he can do when he is on the end of a 'half-a-yarder'.

He also lacks a tall strike partner to be on the end of the knock-downs.

pommpey

I disagree, clarke was the strike partner who played it down to sharp from touch downs and sharpe did not perform well to that.

Equal second (with eight others...) on 4. Top is Josh Morris (Scunny) with 6. (League One)

That says he's only had 7 shots. If correct that's surprising. No surprise Ched's had the most with 25. What those shooting stats usually indicate is a striker's ability to create shooting opportunities for himself, in which case it's not surprising Billy's had fewer than most but 7 is still less than you'd expect.

Does this mean that Evans has gone back to not being able to hit a barn door?

Yep. Back to 2009-11 when he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Don't know if you're being serious but shooting stats alone over a short period can't prove anything too negative. It's only proof that he's been having plenty of shots, which is what a good striker should do. To make any case that he's suddenly 'lost it' you'd have to provide footage of quite an extensive number of sitters being missed. In reality it's likely that a lot of those shots will have been decent efforts, often from outside the box.

Agreed. Just wishful thinking on my part.

Anyway, broke a golden rule and spent some time thinking and writing about Evans. Will stop now.
