Harper heads leaving list
Posted on: Mon 17 May 2010

James Harper is the highest profile name to leave the Blades who have announced the list of players whose contracts are up this summer.

The former Reading midfielder made 33 league and cup starts after converting his initial loan to a full move in mid season.

Whilst Nick Montgomery and Gary Naysmith are both still in negotiations with United about renewing their contracts, eight others will be leaving the Club, including Glen Little and Henri Camara.

Defenders Jonathan Fortune and Derek Geary have fought back well to overcome injury, Maltese International goalkeeper Justin Haber is staying permanently at sister club Ferencvaros in Hungary, and Ian Bennett will also depart.

Striker Liban Abdi and midfielder Sam Wedgbury are released after featuring for the Reserves and picking up first-team experience whilst on loan at Ferencvaros.

Kevin Blackwell says: "I would like to thank all of them for what they have given Sheffield United and hope that they soon find other clubs.

"It is always sad to see long serving players leave, particularly when they have served us well, but we are rebuilding a squad that we hope will equip us for a promotion challenge and this will give us some leeway towards bringing others in."

Losing our token Malteser might suggest that Bogdanovic is destined to take his place in the Visit Malta lounge.

MAssive shame to see del by go. Good luck to him.

whilst some may say there's no room for sentiment in the hard financial times that may lay ahead, I would've liked us to give Del Boy another year.

Poor bugger, hope he gets fixed up soon.

I don't understand releasing Del Boy. They've stood by him and waited so long for him to try and get fit. When he looks like he has any sort of fitness returning they get rid? A little confusing.

oh and surely deserving of a second post is the fact we've managed to get rid of Harper :D

I see benno is also leaving thought he'd be given a coaching role??? I think Naysmith may sign but not sure on monty.

Maybe Bennet wants to carry on playing. He is still a decent keeper and may drop down to the lower leagues. I would have thought that he would have been offered a coaching role (especially with leaning going).

I agree I'd like to see Naysmith and Monty stay. as for the rest ..... Good riddance to bad rubbish. I would have liked to have seen Harper play under a different manager, but he played 33 games and failed to impress (in fact he showed very little) so he only has himself to blame.

That leaves 17 players on the books at the moment, including Monty & Naysmith.

I think Monty will go, probably Sharp as well so that's 15 at most.

Of those 15, 5 of them (France, Taylor, Stewart, Aksalu & Lowton) can be described as "squad" players at best, certainly not players who we should be looking to to play 35+ games a season in a serious promotion push anyway!

So that leaves 10, (in my opinion) first team players. Which means we need a shit-load of signings!

Gutted for Del, but I think i heard that he was Leeds bound... Hope not

We should've given Del a testimonial. Foxy, Linz get this organised :)

Wedgebury - was hoping that he would be the next of the fradi loan outs to make the step up, so i'm disappointed to see people that we've obviously invested time effort and money into not making it.

As always, good luck to the players leaving.... However, I'm gutted that Jordan Stewart is not on this list. Surely a one legged Del is better and more reliable than the worst player i've seen in a Blades shirt

Depends if Stewart's contract has expired. I'd guess we must have given him a two year contract or he surely would have been on the released list.

This now leaves us with:

Goalkeepers:

Paddy Kenny - Contracted till end of 2011
Mihkel Aksalu - Contracted till end of 2012

Defenders:

Gary Naysmith - Out of contract at end of season - Discussions ongoing
Chris Morgan - Contracted till end of 2011
Andy Taylor - Contracted till end of 2012
Jordan Stewart - Contracted till end of 2011
Phil Roe - Out of contract at end of season - No idea whats happening with him

Midfield:
Ryan France - Contracted till end of 2011
Nick Montgomery - Out of contract at end of season - Discussions ongoing
Mark Yeates - Contracted till end of 2012
Lee Williamson - Contracted till end of 2012
Stephen Quinn - Contracted till end of 2011 + an extra year option
Kyel Reid - Out of contract at end of season - Suspect I've got his contract details wrong

Strikers:

Darius Henderson - Contracted till end of 2012
Ched Evans - Contracted till end of 2012
Richard Cresswell - Contracted till end of 2013
Jamie Ward - Contracted till end of 2012
Billy Sharp - Contracted till end of 2011

It's a disgrace. We should have given Harper a three-year deal on ridiculous wages, as Hull City did with Jimmy Bullard.

Thanks Foxy.

What about Lowton?

He played in the pre-season game at Lincoln. Came on as a sub wearing the longest shorts seen since Nudger Needham.

i think aksalu will be our back up keeper for next season, apparently blackwell rates him quite highly

Let's hope it's not a load of shit signings

Don't forget that Willo is out until November because he needs another operation -so that leaves 9.
Heard a rumour that Siep will be coming in as cover so that's back up to 10 and Blackie wants to get all his dealings done before the trip to Malta.
He'll be lucky to get all that done.

Leaning gone as goal keeping coach, rumours about Speed going to Hull - and there's is a revolving door being installed at the players entrance to BDTBL.

Still things could be worse. On the other side of the City their Chief Comedy Clown is being replaced with Mr Personality.
Since Triesman's faux pas there will be no World Cup in England until at the earliest 2066 - by that time the shit hole will have corroded to nothing.

Thanks Foxy.

What about Lowton?

He'll obviously be in the squad, no idea on the contract details though.

He'll be on loan somewhere anyway unless desperately needed back at the lane.

Decent rumour that Paddy is QPR bound.

Seen that Bob and the poster usually knows his stuff!

If I'm honest, I'd be stunned if we let him go. We've stood by him for the last year and paid his wages (supposedly) Paddy wants to repay the club for standing by him. Blackie did nothing but praise him when he came back and yet there's a strong rumour he's on his bike!

WTF is going on?

If QPR offer £2m and the new lad looks like quality then fair enough. But in truth, which of these two criteria are realistic?

Cant see paddy wanting to leave, and i hope he doesnt. He'll be like a new signing next season as i would go as far too say one of our most important players if he stays fit. But with our position at the moment we would accept 2mill for sure. If he goes get simmo back!
also i know we offered wedgbury a 3 month contract too see if he would have got in the side and then were going to extend till end of season - he rejected it and already has a trial lined up with macclesfield. (i know his missus from school)
