The case for Rob Page

People might have realised by now but I am a bit sick of this 'experience' card. Not all experience is good and we have all worked with people who have years of 'experience' in their field who you don't respect or consider their skills good enough.

Here we have a guy respected and who captained nearly every team he played for and who has apparently impressed 'the board' more than most if not all of the other candidates. Page has a vision and as long as the club support him in what he needs to do, why isn't he good enough for this job? Not long ago everyone was creaming about the chance to get Karl Robinson, someone I wouldn't have minded yet was given his chance by MK Dons aged 29. Now he surrounded himself with football knowledge and has done OK, but no great shakes but everyone can see there is something there. Now people seem to want to have anyone rather than the man the board want but are now too scared to appoint.

Bassett was on the selection committee for Wimbledon where he picked Ardley for the job who has since done ok and saved them from relegation. I see most have taken to slagging of Dave without knowing the process so I think this may help. Maybe we are doing things in the right way.

so why not think outside the box like we have been asking the club to do for years and appoint a young exciting prospect who doesn't come with baggage, or maybe we should just continue trying to find someone with experience, you know like Wilson or Appleton etc;

Of course, and no bugger else wants the poison chalice. I'm not saying it would be a bad appointment, time will tell if that is the case. I guess it's the idea that he might just have been third or fourth choice that is upsetting people. Whoever is offered and accepts the job from hell I am sure we will give him a fair crack of the whip as it were.

It's going to be a very difficult season at the lane unless we are 10 points clear at the top by the end of August.

What is difficult to fathom is how Page fits into the supposed blueprint they're working from. It's OK to play the 'everyone has to start somewhere' card but Winter seemed to suggest that experience of working in certain conditions was a must and the fact Page has no managerial experience whatsoever seems to go against everything in the 'plan'.

I'm all for giving him a chance if he's talked the talk and shown that he's potentially got what it takes (however you can do that) but it would be a massive gamble to employ a new manager at such a crucial time. As stated by others though, if the 'experienced' candidates are all turning it down because they don't fancy it, we've got little choice.

What Arnold had to say does cast a massive shadow over everything though and it doesn't take a huge leap of faith to go Bassett - Adams - Page.

What we don’t know about Robert Page in management:
- - What style of football he will play
- - How fit he will insist they are (hopefully fitter then they looked last season)
- - How astute he is with free transfers on cheap wages. Particularly strikers and wingers that we are desperately short of
- - How he will develop the youngsters currently ready to play
- - How he’ll bring on the next batch of youngsters
- - How he will move out underperforming senior players (starting with Doyle, presumably he’ll punch his lights out)
- - How he’ll deal with youth loans and other loans
- - How he’ll hang on to Long and Maguire and anyone else the Board tries to sell from under his feet

What we do know about RP:
- - He is a leader in terms of having captained several sides and is well respected
- - He was good mates with Morgs when they played together
- - He cares about SUFC, he still lives in Sheffield (I think) and will know very well the mood of the fans

No bugger else seems to want the job. It’s a massive gamble but as with every other manager we’ve appointed since Robson I desperately want him to succeed.

He’ll get my support when he joins but he has lots to do.

Good luck, you’ll need it. And if you fail I won’t criticise you, SUFC are a basket case at the moment, not sure anyone can administer the cure.

Every manager has to start somewhere, to be fair I never minded having an inexperienced manager take over (was happy enough with Morgan). Just can't believe its taken over a month to appoint someone since Wilson got the axe.

In 2011/12, Rob Page was a youth coach for Port Vale and Tom Pope scored 5 goals in 45 games for Vale's first team (4 in 28 before Mickey Adams left for Bramall Lane)

In 2012/13, Rob Page - now holder of UEFA A and B licences - was Port Vale first team coach. Tom Pope scored 33 goals in 51 games.

Now I'm not going to suggest that this improvement was solely down to Page but he should be able to take some of the credit.

Yes, well done, I remember meeting him and Asaba at the Champions in Ecclesall after we won 4-2 at Brighton in 2003. I was drunk when I talked to them but they were friendly and cheerful!
