The Blades and Your Birth Year

My year of birth was the highest we've finished in my lifetime, as it turns out from a Google search after reading this.

Welcome to the Forum. I look forward to reading your posts, and hope you will be adding to the many posts on here about United across the decades. And at least now we don't have to look back to find good things to talk about, with Wilder producing a team that plays football as good as any I can remember (I started in 1953).

A claim to fame, and, as we lost, a truly Blade claim to fame :) .

I've been told that the snow in the winter of 47 was unbelievable. So much so that snow was cleared from the streets and needed to be dumpted . One of the places used was the old quarry on Chesterfield Road where Homebase is located. Apparently there was so much snow that the last of it didn't disappear until mid June!

Our last game of the season was on 14th June. Stoke needed to beat us to win the league. We won 2-1 and it was Liverpool who won the league.

Thanks for that. The next time I meet up with my two Liverpool supporting cousins I shall point out to them that they owe one of their titles to the Blades. 🙂

Loved the report of the match at the Lane. Good to see that crowds don't change, and that even though it was not a game that meant anything for Utd, they made a lot of noise as Stoke's chances of winning the league disappeared. One personal detail interested me. My mother always said that the horrendous winter of 1947 lasted until I was born, and then the sun came out (make of that what you will), and stayed out for the rest of the summer. Yet it sounds as if the Stoke match in June was played in pouring rain. Don't put your trust in family stories!

They sold Stan Matthews to Blackpool a few weeks earlier. Seems a strange decision to sell him!

By trying to watch the lads I just missed the birth of my second girl on Satdy Jan 4th 1986.
Was a late birth so Ol’ Lady had been moved from Buxton to Stockport Stepping Hill. Seem to remember heavy snow meant Blades game had a late cancellation and I struggled getting across t’Pennines. Daughter was 15 minutes old when I got there so wasn’t a bad effort.
 
1952 -August so finished in 1953
Blades won Div 2 (now championship) to get promoted to the top league and Alf Ringstead top scorer with 22 goals lost in 4th round of FA cup.
Lasted just 3 seasons before relegation again !

Thanks for the welcome HBT, I have been following the lads for a little longer than you (1948). We have both seen lots of ups and downs in the last 60/70 yrs. The only three managers that I had any confidence in, Sir John, Davie B, and to a lesser extent, Warnock. Chris, however, is, the best by a country mile. I only hope that the court battle that is raging does not allow him to slip through our fingers.
 
Born in August 74 a week before the 74-75 season started.

United had their best season in my lifetime before I could walk and talk. In 45 years since we’ve had just 7 years in the top division. I’m hoping that the numbers look a bit better in a few years time.
