11th in the old division 3 following us winning division 4. I was born in 82/83. Revolution posted a bit more on that season a while back. I bought one of the retro GallonofMagnet shirts from 82-84 the other year – lovely shirt.

27th November 1990 - lost 2-0 to Spurs in the league cup but stayed up that season with the magical post-Christmas run under Bassett.

My first son was born nearly 3 weeks ago, so in 20 odd years time when this question gets asked again he can tell everyone about how Sir Chris Wilder got us promoted against all odds. He may only ever know Premier League football

Year I was born, United and Pigs finished respectively 3 and 4th bottom of division one. Liverpool were relegated and the top 11 teams included, Preston, Charlton, Bolton, Blackpool, Cardiff, West Brom, Huddersfield. Only 4 of the top 12 teams are currently top tier, Burnley, Wolves, Man Utd, Chelsea

What year was it ?

Next year I can confidently predict the top six teams, as could we all. How boring and predictable has the top division become ?

Noticed one season, may have been 1948-49, where we finished 3rd in the 2nd division, Pigs 2nd. We had exactly the same points and goal difference but they went up on a tiny margin having a better goal average.

In 1938-39 the roles were reversed. There was a very funny Harry Heap cartoon depicting the depressed Wednesday fans with the final caption being a little lad asking his Grandad in a house in Hillsborough in 1970 if he could remember the "Crisis of 1939" and the Wendy supporting old fella says, "Aye lad, I went to see Spurs lick United and they didn't".

1961. Don't know why I have never looked this up before. Blades finished 5th, Wednesday finished 6th. Both in the then, first division. The Blades did the double. Ipswich were champions. Liverpool won the second division. Millwall won the fourth. Bournemouth were called Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic. Interesting. I feel old.
Edit: Why did Wednesday take part in the Inter City Fairs Cup and we didn't? Anyone know?

March 1974, and as I started to make my arrival, my dad missed out on our 3-0 home defeat by Ipswich Town.



However, on the Saturday we went to Maine Road and won 1-0 - Geoff Salmons got the winner.

Depends. Billie tends to be the female spelling whereas Clark, like Clark Gable, tends to be the male spelling but in these modern times where gender fluidity is acceptable I don’t think it’s that important.

Same here. Born 11/08/1955 and - nine days later on August 20th - we began the 1955-56 season with a 2-4 defeat at Newcastle. It didn't get much better as we finished that season rock-bottom of the First Division. I threw my toys out the pram...
Joe Mercer was our manager - 'the worst manager United have ever had' said my dad. Thankfully he'd passed away long before Adkins arrived.

My daughter was born 1 hour after the Blades went down after the Wigan game, her first season as a season ticket holder this year, promoted back.

Me: the day I was born, the Blades beat Charlton 1-0, they finished 12th in Division 2 with Alan Woodward top scorer. Spurs finished third in Division 2 and got promoted to Division 1 with Bolton and Southampton. Leicester, West Ham and Newcastle came down.

The year I was born 1947 was the first full season played since the 1938- 39 season, apparently something had happened to disrupt the normal flow of events in between those two periods.

At the end of the English top division season Liverpool were Champions and Manchester United were runners up. Sheffield United finished 6th. We would have finished one position higher but they have always been a family club, and when they were informed of the birth of a Blade just up from Heeley Bottom and within sound of the roar of the Kop they decided to take it easy and not cause too much noise, as a result we lost 1 nil to Blackburn Rovers the day after I was born.

Never heard a thing, and slept blissfully, unaware of the glory to come.

The final table is interesting, some 'proper' clubs there. Leeds United being relegated gives a warm feeling but there's something else about that years First Division club line up which I find pleasing, but I can't quite work out exactly what it is. Anyone able to help me out here?

The Second Division table that year is also a little puzzling in that for some reason I like it, but not as much as I'd have liked to, not sure why.

That makes you a bit older than me. Because of the awful winter of 1947, the football carried on into the summer, and I have the honour of being born on a day which is unique in United's history, I believe, - the only time they have ever played a home league match on May 24th. I should have taken the hint - we lost 3-2! I only found this oddball fact out recently, so I never got the chance to ask my dad if he went to the Lane that day... He probably didn't - I bet he was playing cricket!

After 2 sons, the youngest one born 16 years earlier, my mum was convinced I was going to be a girl (even had a name picked ) I think I was a disappointment!

Mothers can be dangerous. Mine had been reading 'Great Expectations' (I kid you not), and wanted to call me Pip. Fortunately, my Dad put his foot down; mind you, if he'd got his way fully, I would probably have been called Hagan!
