The atmosphere v Brentford......

I organised a stag do in Newcastle for last weekend and we went to see the game vs Everton. Now after the comeback from 0-2 to 3-2 the place was rocking, but at 0-0 and any time up to the final goal it was a very similar atmosphere to Bramall Lane. And this is a club famed for its support.

It's not a Blades thing, its a modern football thing.

I try my best to join in, but sat on Gangway B in the South Stand it is usually just me, a bloke that sits behind me and then the rest of the stand gawping at us.

It is of course down to the players (and bad refereeing at times) to encourage us, but they're not exactly doing a bad job on the pitch!

I always feel the atmosphere is much better when we're underdogs, and we haven't really been underdogs since September 2017 for me. We've played good football and are very aware of the fact we can beat most teams in this division on our day.

When the tram really needs support it is there. A dodgy red card/free kick/penalty decision and the place explodes. It's all circumstantial.

There's a reason opposition fans rate us as having one of the best atmospheres around, and it's because most of the time it is actually better than other grounds.

Basically, it is what it is.

I think this is a real factor. HUGE factor. It is for me anyway... Being sat down at a match proper takes the feeling of singing your heart out away from me.

Home matches, everyone bar the people at the top of the kop are sat down, i just don't feel like singing when i'm sat down

I don’t think anyone is suggesting we have some shitty band or hideous clapper devices. But the point on the atmosphere needing to improve does resonate for me – and it must do for folk like Wilder too if he feels the need to repeatedly bring it up. This isn’t about non-stop noise, but about doing what we currently do marginally louder and more frequently. It doesn’t feel like a huge ask, but the slightest suggestion of needing to improve seems to immediately rough people up the wrong way as though they’ve taken it personally.

This was raised in League 1 and the main message then as to why it wasn’t important was that it would be solved by promotion. Now the response seems to be “there never was a problem, so stop talking about it”. I’m more proud and positive of this club now than at any other point in the last 10 years. We have a fantastic style of football praised by many away from the club. We have a Blade as manager, a Blade as captain, and a likeable team pushing well above its weight. It’s being matched by the current numerical support. I don’t feel like that’s being matched by the current atmosphere.

Who are you/they to suggest I/we support my/your/their/our team a little more vociferously?

I pay my money and I’ll fail to shout whatever I like.

I think you are about right. I would add that the drive to improve the atmosphere should not be an attempt to return to a mythical past. There have been plenty of occasions when the Lane has been noisy, in the Cup, in promotion seasons, occasional other games for specific reasons, but there never was a golden age when it was a cauldron of noise week in, week out. Most league matches have always been less noisy, as they generally always have been at most grounds. There are certainly factors which make it harder to generate noise now (seating, acoustics, ageing crowds perhaps), but the Lane has pretty well always relied on the Kop, and in the 50s/early 60s when we walked from the Kop to the Lane end to watch United attack in the 2nd half, as sometimes happened, the miserable old gits there did not welcome our arrival with our noisy rattles and chants - we disturbed their peace and quiet. And the only time me and my brother persuaded our mother to go to a match (against our dad's better judgement), we went on the John Street Terrace so that she would not have to put with the rabble on the Kop. The Terrace was much more civilised.

So I am all for making the Lane noisier. But don't be fooled into thinking that you have missed out on a mythical past.

The only away match i've been to in the past 3ish years that had anything like a decent atmosphere from the home fans was at Wolves last season - really, really impressive. Everywhere else is as much of a library as Bramall Lane in the home end.
