The atmosphere this season

Too many kids on the kop for my liking. Isnt there a special place in the ground for them, think its called the Family Stand?
Think I've got football tourettes and when I called Deadman a 'F****in T***' on Saturday I got a right look of disgust from the twelve year old lass two rows in front of me. :(:D
Stick em all in the kop corner and rename it 'Creche corner'. Sorted.

Although it feels like a weight has been lifted and for the first in many years we appear to be going in the right direction the atmosphere around the ground still seems relatively flat compared to seasons gone by, I got a message at around the 70 minute mark on Saturday from a mate at his first game of the season (due to work commitments) saying how quiet it was, and he went right back to the seventies saying how he'd never heard it like that. I hadn't thought about it up until that point but I suppose he's right to an extent. I know the last few years have taken their toll on the fans big time but it just worries me a little that it may never come back, especially with the generation below mine preferring to wave flashing lights around.

It will start warming up believe me if we are still in this position come Jan/Feb - and we start getting into the real business end of the season. it's a bit flat at the moment, but that just down to years of sh1te and resulting apathy. Which takes time to wake up from.

I dont understand why people say I would rather play 11-11, I hope bury go down to nine after half an hour and down to eight mid way through the second half.if not why do people cheer when they get sent off? also do these fans want us to go down to nine, it is obviously the way to go, un

The general atmosphere and feel round the place towards the players and management has been superb for obvious reasons, you know on a match day everyone is pulling in the same direction. However in terms of chants it isn't wrong to say it is flat at times. The last 2 seasons have had an obvious affect, but I think that the last couple of games such as Vale and Shrewsbury have for the large part been no contests causing it to seem flat. As the season progresses the atmosphere will improve

I felt shit after the 3 injuries. Didn't say a word after that

Beats me why parents would take their kids on the kop in the first place. You're always going to hear bad language. That's why we have a family stand. If you take your kids on the kop you either accept they'll hear swearing (and give them 'the talk'; now you might hear grown ups using bad language today but..) or you're incredibly naive.
And kids swear anyway when they think they can't be heard, we did when we were kids.

It's gradually getting better after a sustained period of utter shitness, boredom and disconnection between fans and club (and active hostility too on the part of many of us). Can't just wipe out the last three or four years as if they never happened. They've taken their toll.

Most important thing now IMO is the lack of any sort of downer from the crowd when things aren't going great. There's a hell of a lot of goodwill around right now.

Christmas/new year will be fun though, with some seriously big crowds. Be interesting to see/hear what noise levels are like then.

Depends what you mean by kids. My son is16 and tries to get people to sing throughout. It's generally us old bastards that refuse to join in.

I wonder how many of those that criticise the atmosphere ever really try to do anything about it themselves.

Don't underestimate the effect internet-enabled mobile phones have had.

Back in the day, if your team was playing shite that would rouse the fans even more. There might be some old bloke with a portable radio who'd start a "Sheffield Wenesda f**ked it up again" chant when news came through that the pigs had let another one in, but otherwise everyone concentrated on the game. If the match really was shite then getting a good chant going served as entertainment....

Now most of the young 'uns (and lets be honest many of the old 'uns) are staring at their little screens not at the pitch, all the more so if we're playing gash. Not just a Bramall Lane phenomenon.

The Adko's v The Cloughie......T'was a bit like West Side Story on the kop last season.

Whilst I agree that the noise at t'Lane isn't what it once was, I think the atmosphere is much improved this season in terms of positivity and that's all that matters. A misplaced pass isn't greeted by a round of boos and jeers but an encouraging "c'mon" ... A bit of pressure from the opposition isn't met with the manager getting cat-called from all four sides of the ground but a "United!" chant which, whilst nothing sparkling, is giving the players the confidence to go again. The atmosphere, in terms of noise, will increase as we near the end of the season and then if we make it back to the Championship; but it's ten times what it was last season.

We lost fuck all.
Erm, but we did? We lost that second half 1-0 to 9 men. You'd be lying to say otherwise.
I just think it's funny that people are trying to moan about the support after that half. Even the most ardent of blades were getting jittery, minds casting back to the last few year.

It's going to take time for us to get over that as fans, but we're getting there. If we're still around the top 2 come February onwards the lane is going to be absolutely belting.

Bang on. Mental scars don't just exist with the players in football, they exist with fans too. It's only 2 months ago we conceded 3 goals in 15 minutes against fucking Southend.
A bit of scepticism is to be expected.

The problem with playing 9 men is that they just defend the penalty area, you almost have to score the perfect goal.

If we'd played against 10 men, then they might have had to go for it a little bit more as a point would have been a little more realistic than with 9. Therefore we'd have faired better in my opnion.

To be honest I wish they hadn't got any sent off and it was 11v11, think we would have won in convincing style.
I think once they crocked 3 of our players we lost our rhythm. We lost our ball ticker in Coutts and width in Freeman. We had to change style a lot and it put the players about.

But then I suppose if it was 11 v 11 Coutts would have definitely still been on the pitch so you may well be right.

Winning a half isn't a valid concept though. It's meaningless. You don't get points per half, it's points per game.
But I get your point about nerves. As others have said, we could have dropped points in a game like that under Adkins.

No, I know that completely. Winning halves only matter to bookies. But the nerves were setting in due to us potentially fucking up against 9 man Shrewsbury, it's understandable it wasn't roaring.

We haven't played any of Charlton, Bolton, Coventry, Bradford or Scunny at the Lane yet. The 'big' teams in this league where fans can get potentially excited. It's impossible to get up for the 4th game against Shrewsbury.
It's not about us not wanting to support the team or anything like that, I just physically cannot be bothered with Shrewsbury, with Bury, with Oxford. It was nice for a couple of years to play shit teams in shit little grounds but the jokes lasted long enough now and super Chris Wilder is coming to finish our slot at the Apollo. :)

The atomosphere is getting better but I would not say its fullly back and the second half on Saturday showed it was not fully back.

I don't think we will have a real buzzing atmosphere at the Lane til we are back in the Championship.

It's alright. It's certainly getting better.

If it's still a bit muted then that's probably down to apprehension at the prospect of fucking it up, and the knowledge that where United are concerned, nothings done 'til it's done.

If things go to plan, the place will be fucking electric come March/April.
^ ^ ^ ^ this...

Years in this league playing teams who bring 200 fans if they're lucky.

Half of creating an atmosphere is back and forths with opposing sets of fans, there's no bloody forths.
^ ^ ^ ...this
Unless Oldham or Northampton bring extra over Xmas, then the next team to bring over 1k fans will be Scunny in February

I did wonder how much the man in front of me paid to get his two kids in on Sat along with himself. Boy about 9 girl about 15. Girl spent time checking phone , boy climbing on back of seats. Waste of money all told.

I'm not too convinced about starting the chip butty song as the ref kicks off as many don't join in and the atmosphere tends to go a bit flat and quiet after it finishes.
Might be better to have the butty song two minutes earlier so that at kick off there is great roar which breaks out into "united, united" or another song and has a bit more momentum.

I love the fact we've got our own song but it's become a bit of a cliche these days, for me.

I think the difference comes when teams park the bus.

Shrewsbury would've been happy to park the bus but we were soon 1/2-0 up. After that they would've had to come at us more and we could've picked them off. As it was they went down to 9 and t was damage limitation time, so they pack the box again trying to not let us run up a cricket score.

Same with Bury. They'll try and have 11 camped in their box for most of the game I imagine. If we get one then they'll come at us more and we can open them up more. If they lost a couple of players then they'll go back to camping in their area on damage limitation...it'd be daft to go for a team when you're 2-down in score and player numbers.

I was surprised how poor the atmosphere was yesterday. But I suppose the game wasn't much of a contest so there wasn't really much for the fans to get animated about. In fact I reckon it was about the 70th minute before there was any meaningful noise.

When we scored however, it was a little more noisy.

Boxer Blade - any idea on the lottery numbers this week?

This, this and thrice this. It's contrived, tacky, and worst of all, counter productive. Our version, when not pre-empted, is fast, upbeat and sung in a higher key. When the fans follow the opening bar of the original song its like starting the match with a funeral march. When I first started going back in the 80s, about 15 seconds before KO there used to be a rumble that quickly erupted into a spontaneous, primeval roar. hairs on the back of your neck stuff. It didn't need some jobsworth with a microphone to cheerlead.
