Although it feels like a weight has been lifted and for the first in many years we appear to be going in the right direction the atmosphere around the ground still seems relatively flat compared to seasons gone by, I got a message at around the 70 minute mark on Saturday from a mate at his first game of the season (due to work commitments) saying how quiet it was, and he went right back to the seventies saying how he'd never heard it like that. I hadn't thought about it up until that point but I suppose he's right to an extent. I know the last few years have taken their toll on the fans big time but it just worries me a little that it may never come back, especially with the generation below mine preferring to wave flashing lights around.

No doubt about it, at times its there but overall it isn’t, if we progress to the third round of the cup and get a good draw from either of the top two divisions the atmosphere will be electric because we have confidence in causing an upset, also when we get towards the last few games and see the winning line I believe it will be brilliant, think the last couple of seasons has taken its toll, especially under adkins more than we realised

Saturday was a weird game though. First half I thought the crowd were quite fired up, second half I think everyone just assumed it was already game over and then started to get frustrated.

Otherwise, I think the atmosphere has been steadily improving ever since the Oxford game.

Completely agree and it was very quiet on the kop on Saturday and not like our great tradition. I suspect a year of the Madkins sedative has alot to do with it, it was stronger than Valium but hopefully will wear off. From what I see its usually much better when we play away thankfully.

its just league we were in how do you get exited for rochdale fleetwood southend etc, as you need abit tension & passion for the atmosphere. we been so good in recent weeks just take shrewsbury & L orient the game was sown up by 25 mins as it was so 1 sided, so everyone relaxes. dont worry about the atmosphere because just look in recent yrs when the game matters Forest Charlton Southhampton Tottenham & even the must win game v oxford in august at the start of this 13 game unbeaten run. it just as loud as ever

I'd be interested to know what your mate's been hearing during the last couple of seasons if he thinks Saturday was the worst ever.

Agree Saturday was a bit flat but it wasn't a normal match, it became like a training session in the 2nd half.

I took a little kid with me and he said it was "boringly easy" and he doesn't feel nervous like he did last season. I know what he meant. The match was effectively over at half time.

Even when they pulled a goal back there was never any worry they could score a second.

It was very quiet, but then it always is nowadays. It is hard to get excited about playing Shrewsbury, but why is that being used as an excuse not to vocally back the team?

As for the light shining. Parents... do your job please

I think we could probably do with a few decent songs to sing! I have no suggestions, I am no lyricist.

I personally think the "were coming for you" song is a little premature, but I love the fact it winds the piggy bastards up!

It's alright. It's certainly getting better.

If it's still a bit muted then that's probably down to apprehension at the prospect of fucking it up, and the knowledge that where United are concerned, nothings done 'til it's done.

If things go to plan, the place will be fucking electric come March/April.

Saturday there was a lot of understandable nervousness in the stands. The performance in that second half was bad and we could've easily drawn against 10 men.

We're healing mental scars after years and years of fucking up leads against non-descript teams, losing to 10 men at home, and rolling over and having our bellies tickled. It's getting there, patience is key.

Atleast we only need to sing to get the atmosphere at the lane, we could lower ourselves to needing some sort of "band", but our fans aren't embarrassed to chant for the blades and as we can read, the lyrics are pretty easy to learn!

Not the worst, I would've corrected him on that straight away! I think he meant purely how quiet it was.

So he'd never heard it like that but it wasn't the worst?

Easily drawn against 10 men, really ? Must have been at another game to me, mind you perhaps you were worse for wear if you thought we were playing 10 men.

We lost the second half. Against 9 men. If they just had one extra man you never know what could have happened.
We were woeful in that second - but clearly the only thing that matters is we came through it unscathed with 3 points and no major injuries.

I was on the Kop gangway C for the Shrews game. Agree it was very quiet at times. Most of the noise was coming from (by my reckoning) back of Gangway F. I did try to join in with them occasionally, but I was on my own - nobody around me joined in!

I agree and Clough and Adkins have caused lasting damage to fan morale.

I though Clough did his bit and the atmosphere for the Swindon play off and Spurs/Saints LC games were second to non.

Agree that Adkins was an unmitigated disaster though, even though I didn't want another change at the time.

The problem with playing 9 men is that they just defend the penalty area, you almost have to score the perfect goal.

If we'd played against 10 men, then they might have had to go for it a little bit more as a point would have been a little more realistic than with 9. Therefore we'd have faired better in my opnion.

To be honest I wish they hadn't got any sent off and it was 11v11, think we would have won in convincing style.

We all want the team to get back to where it belongs and I wonder if after the bad years the fans under estimate their potential role in this. 12th man. Chicken and egg etc. The Lane was once a very intimidating place for away teams but we all saw what the Shrewsbury player did when he scored. I suspect if some of our good song starters chime up there are many who will join in. My voice aint strong enough unfortunately, needs a few of our fine alpha males to start it.

We lost fuck all.

Talk for yourself I was really concerned they would score again. It's the Blades natural pessimism!

Last season we would sit back and defend the 2-1 lead and maybe run to the corner flags wasting time with 15 minutes to go

But after their goal they hardly got out of their own half.
We had chance after chance and it was only a matter of time before we made it 3-1.

They did have a rare attack and pushed a few up about 2 minutes from time, was a little nervous then.
-and we stopped attacking after that, just keeping possession and running down the clock.

Too many kids on the kop for my liking. Isnt there a special place in the ground for them, think its called the Family Stand?
Think I've got football tourettes and when I called Deadman a 'F****in T***' on Saturday I got a right look of disgust from the twelve year old lass two rows in front of me. :(:D
